deliberalization, in poor Dean
@deliberalization@lemmy.ml avatar

I read exactly one Dean Koontz book and it was about an evil literary critic who tortures the author with a taser in the first few chapters. He is later revealed to be an actual ghost

Kudos to Dean for monetizing a night terror, but he should have been given AI video creation and tiktok voiceovers to express that. I can’t remember another time I got Library Lender’s Remorse.

Restaldt, (edited )

I think ive also ready exactly one koontz book

I think it involved a child genius inventing time travel with something that looked like salt and pepper shakers because his family was being targeted by an assassin for some reason

Also might have been a fever dream not sure

dona1dquixote,

It’s called From the Corner of His Eye. He’s not time traveling, he just figured out how to hop between different alternate realities. It happens to be one of my favourite books.

Restaldt,

Ive been trying to figure this out all day and thats not it

Im pretty sure ive conflated parts of Mr murder and a completely different author/book called the mark of the assassin and honestly maybe parts of a 3rd book i havent remembered yet

I read those ~15 years ago

dona1dquixote,

Well then that’s a weird coincidence because From the Corner of His Eye is about a child genius who can move between different realities and is being targeted by a serial killer.

doctordevice, (edited )

One Dean Koontz book isn’t a great sample size. He writes a LOT and most of it isn’t very good, but every once in a while he gets it just right and puts out a really good one.

Though tbf, I haven’t re-read his stuff in probably 10 years so I don’t know if it holds up to modern scrutiny. Odd Thomas was always my favorite of his.

pearsaltchocolatebar,

The Frankenstein series was good as well.

brbposting,

Relentless:

What began as an innocent and unexpected encounter is about to trigger an inferno of violence. For Shearman Waxx is not merely a ferocious literary enemy, but a ruthless sociopath, and now he is intent on destroying Cubby and everything he holds dear: his home, his wife, his young son, and every hope he had in the world.

The terror has only just begun, and it will be relentless…

Anticorp, (edited ) in poor Dean

Brandon Sanderson and Tim Patrick Rothfuss started signing each other’s books for awhile too. I read that Sanderson signs his and Rothfuss books at the airport bookstore when he’s traveling. I managed to find a few signed Sanderson books at the airport bookstore in SLC when I flew through there for a connecting flight once. I still have them on my bookshelf. No cross-signings though.

Mischala,

Do you mean Patrick Rothfuss?

Anticorp,

Lol, yes I do. Thank you.

Mischala,

It’s easy to forget his name, seeing as the 3rd book is never going to be released.

Meanwhile Sanderson almost accidentally emmits books

Anticorp,

Yes, I had to think about it for a minute before I even came up with “Tim Rothfuss”. He used to be a household name, and then he just stopped writing. Idk what his deal is, but he did say once that he’s envious of Sanderson’s writing speed. I guess it takes him a long time to write a book, and it seems like he either got burned out, or ran out of ideas. I felt like he took some ideas from Jordan in the 2nd Kingkiller book. I met him once, walking around on the floor at Emerald City Comic Con. He seems like a cool guy. He spent like an hour talking to my sister at his booth after I ran into him. It’s a shame that I think you’re right. It doesn’t look like he’ll ever finish that trilogy.

CallumWells,

Which Jordan did he take some idea from? And is Jordan the first or last name?

Anticorp,

Whoops! I just deleted my original reply because I thought I was replying to another conversation I’m having about Jordan and Terry Goodkind.

The author I’m referring to is Robert Jordan, author of the Wheel of Time series. The warrior culture that Kvoth goes to live & train with in the 2nd book seem to be almost a direct copy of Robert Jordan’s Aeil from the Wheel of Time series. That said, Jordan inspired a lot of writers, including Brandon Sanderson. Sanderson was able to finish Jordan’s epic 14 book story, when Jordan’s health started failing and he reached out to Sanderson to take over the project. Sanderson wrote (I think) the last 2.5 books in the series.

SoonaPaana,

Sorry! Didnt mean to offend! Indians typically use their hands to wipe their butts with water. I think it is cleaner and uses less water relatively. The joke I intended to make was that India has been using water to wash themselves for several years whereas the west needed the invention of a bidet to force the change.

Its almost like westerners came up with the germ theory of disease tranamission and adjusted their sanitation methods to prevent it.

SoonaPaana, (edited )

I agree! But also both Hinduism and Islam had cleanliness rituals baked into their religion. Maybe they were able to notice historically that periodic bathing multiple times a day, helped them to avoid diseases!

A project is in no way, shape, or form obliged to to accept and maintain your code, especially if it’s not a feature they want. If you want your feature so badly, maintain a soft-fork yourself. Don’t want to put in that effort yourself? Then why should the project maintainers?

kittenzrulz123,

Gabe Newell has made some of the best games and Steam is the best platform for consumers, sure Epic Games is better for developers but it’s not great to actually use as a consumer.

KingThrillgore,
@KingThrillgore@lemmy.ml avatar

I know right, its almost like the dumbass in charge at Tesla is a different person than the one in charge at Valve!

SnotFlickerman, (edited )
@SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Look, despite Musk’s PR, I never read a story about Musk like this:

In 2004, Wolpaw was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. Expecting his condition to require a departure from the company, he spoke with managing director Gabe Newell, who surprised him by offering an extended leave with pay. “Your job is to get better,” Newell said. “That is your job description at Valve. So go home to your wife and come back when you are better.”

Gabe Newell isn’t some kind of saint, but he does at least treat his employees like human beings, unlike Musk who famously berates his employees and treats them incredibly badly, especially if they have to (gasp!) miss work for any reason.

So while people shouldn’t be praising Valve as some kind of panacea in the world, because they’re still just a company, the reality is things like this have endeared Newell to the gaming community and made them believe he did care about a quality work environment.

A reminder, 2004 was before Wolpaw had written for multiple hit games from Valve. Portal came out in 2007 with Wolpaw as one half of the writing team. A few years later he would be head writer on Portal 2.

Those games would not have been the same if he had been let go from Valve when he was sick with ulcerative colitis.

Just a different perspective, I think it’s unfair to compare Newell to a fucking slave drive apartheid fuckhead like Musk.

ShortN0te,

The problem is not Gabe. As far as i can tell, Gabe actually cares.

The problem is the CEO that comes after Gabe. Will your games still be available then?

SeekPie,

I bet when that happens, piracy will skyrocket.

shneancy,

that’s exactly what will happen. Valve is a gaming giant because their services offer a paid experience tenfold better than the free piracy, if said exerience becomes shit, well, no reason to keep hanging around is there?

rwhitisissle, (edited )

Valve has been compared to Lord of the Flies because of its corporate structure by multiple people who worked for them. The company has an internal ranking system that determines compensation. It’s also one of the least diverse workplaces in its industry, being overwhelmingly white and male.

pcgamer.com/valves-unusual-corporate-structure-ca…

pcgamer.com/ex-valve-employee-describes-ruthless-…

So, while I’m glad that Gabe was nice to one of his direct reports, the reality is that the president of the company being nice to one specific person doesn’t make the company good or ethically ran.

Yeah but it’s typical to spew negativity without having any solution

Here’s a solution: wholesale reject capitalism as an economic system.

Because that’s literally the only two options here: Valve’s way of doing things and Amazon’s. Really? Try again.

No Corp has ever been good we can still hope and try
