Every “good person” I know of every political strip is horrifically cruel and violent towards intelligent creatures many times a day. Absolutely needlessly. And they deal with this by simply not thinking about it.
Do you think there are some that are trying to balance everything as best they can? As in if they had to chose to cut health or housing you’re going to be an asshole either way
Every single one of them are needlessly – absolutely needlessly and to their own great detriment – participating in atrocity against thinking, feeling creatures who once had the capacity to love them. There’s no question of balance. Everyone loses.
I agree I think they are on a poor trajectory. I can’t see how calling them evil and disgusting is going to change their behaviour. We’ve done that. It doesn’t seem to work. If anything they wear it as a badge of pride because they don’t believe a word of what we are saying. I can only see a solution of showing patience and compassion to those who have been misled and being resolute in calling out the bullshit from the people using them. If we can reach the ones who are good and have been misled more might wake up after them. There will be no possibility of a majority or power and their party will be forced to change or cease to exist. And you’re right everyone loses. Do you want everyone to lose or do you want to be the bigger person. It sucks but there’s no fire with fire. It’s a race to the bottom and we’re already on our way

You read “calling them evil and disgusting” into the text. It was not there.
That was not my intention. I suppose after reading everyone’s comments that was the general vibe I was getting from most people. I apologise if that was not this individual comments intentions.
It’s just been you and me, man. If you go back and try to re-interpret, I think you can see my view that the people we label “good” and “bad” are more a reflection of our human or selfish needs of them than of their moral worth. We need to see the people around us, especially those we are emotionally attached to, as good even though by an objective standard, they are all likely actively participating in atrocity and pretending they are not. Being seen as “good” has more to do with moral fashion than actually working towards some set of values from first principles.
Ok so I’m on the same page now, I think when you wrote the are horrifically cruel and violent towards innocent creatures is where I read in the evil and disgusting. Tbh I’m not sure how being horrifically cruel and violent towards innocent creatures isn’t evil and disgusting. Still I’m making a lot of assumptions. Can you clarify by what you mean by being horrifically cruel and violent towards innocent creatures? Is there a particular event or policy or is it a generalisation, if it’s a generalisation can you point me to some examples, thanks
This is a good doco. And you are right that the reality is people just don’t care enough to keep it in the front of their brain. I do have a question though. If intelligence is the criteria for whether or not it’s cruel to kill or harm another life form, would it be considered better to kill a less intelligent animal over a more intelligent one?
That’s what this is all about, people are putting their trust in systems that aren’t trustworthy, who will sell you to the highest bidder. Or any bidder frankly.
I still “use reddit” in this way, too, mostly that the top and beat results for obscure information tend to be reddit, but I don’t consider this “using” reddit, personally
Reddit is still super useful for information you can’t find elsewhere. But its only for as long as old.reddit still works for me. If that disappears then i don’t think I’ll be back on Reddit again.
I’m insomnia scrolling and BAM this just made my night. I always wondered why they did drew them like that. It gives such a “yes Bartholomew I know what a lion looks like” vibe but then you have real life derps and it’s amazing. Thanks for sharing!
They mostly drew stuff like that because it was popular at the time. People knew how to draw more realistic pictures since, I think, Ancient Greece. At least, they knew about perspective and stuff. But that only resurfaced during the Renaissance, when ancient stuff became popular again
Another consideration is recognizeability and reproduction. When you want hundreds of banners, or maybe even put the image into thousands of metal armors, you don’t want a superrealistic picture.
I blame technology for that one. Animals on coats of arms are created in one, maybe two colors, they are to be replicated in various sizes and materials. It’s a simplified shape that is easy to copy and can still be read on flags, on documents etc.
I went to a food truck festival a few weeks ago, and holy shit the prices of stuff. I don’t think there was a single item you could get for less than $18, and that was like the price of three french fries.
Yeah that’s how it is here. Food trucks are only at events and event food costs a fortune for some reason. You’d think that having 1000s of hungry people in one place would allow the to drop the price a bit but nah gotta squeeze us for everything.
TBF food trucks are insanely expensive (like, $80K+ expensive) so I don’t really blame owners for charging whatever people will pay. I’m just amazed people pay that much.
Yeah classic food truck venue here is an event at a brewery where they’re legally required to serve food. So you buy tickets and then provide to the vendors, but if you work out the prices it ends up being insane with super small quantities. They always have to make the food weird too, sometimes it’s cool but sometimes you just want normal shitfood.
I wanna do one where it’s like simple lowbrow stoner food done just a little fancy. Like grilled PB&J, but the peanut butter is the good stuff and the jam has the full berries in it, sourdough bread that can really take a heavy fry in some salted butter. The kind of stuff that’s dirt simple to make but really shines with a bit of extra love.
In Colorado, that has been my experience for over a decade. Food truck food was never cheap here. In Portland, just this year, I managed a few great and cheap meals from their food carts.
In my city: there was two stoners who ran around making three types of ramen - vegan, non-vegan (their broth is a different), and regular (they crack an egg).
It was like $6-7.
I loved those guys and used to follow them around.
I’ve noticed that Lemmy has been shedding a lot of the Reddit style toxicity that was brought here from the influx. Presumably that has something to do with the terminally on Reddit people leaving.
