On serious note… It’s any age. You can tell when a couple is just trying to reproduce an image of “family” because they were told it’s the next thing to do in life. Working in retail id often see families you could tell just went through the motions and that everyone was disconnected from one another. It’s sad.

Gin? Genetics? Giant?

Do you pronounce Origin like Oregon?

I personally find arguing pronunciation as entirely pointless when there are many words in English that get pronounced different based on a multitude of factors.

People also like to argue it’s an acronym, but do you pronounce NASA the same as you pronounce the first letter of each word of National Aeronautics and Space Administration?

Honestly? Just say it how it makes sense to you.

soloner,

Not to mention the creator of GIF prefers the JIF pronunciation.

It doesn’t really matter, but I find the hard g folks have a stick up their ass about it.

SwampYankee,

Yeah, I have friends who say it with a hard g and I never say a damn thing, but I say jif once and it’s “jraphics” this and “jod” that. I get it, you watched that stupid video in 2012, congrats.

NightAuthor,

Maybe we should up the ante on this war, and start actively making fun of those who be hating on peanut butter. There are plenty of arguments for either pronunciation, but jiffers are losing the war bc we’re being so passive. Just living our lives, as if the pronunciation of a word doesn’t fucking matter if everyone knows what you mean…. We need to eradicate the culture of soft-g giffers

BoxerDevil,

Yeah well like the maker of the platypus, the creator is wrong

irish_link, (edited )

I understand your point in the creator but I find fault in that argument.

Historically it doesn’t matter what the creator of anything prefers unless it’s an “unveiling” and they name it on the spot. People in general will take something and run with it regardless of the creators intent. The perfect example is “light saber” versus “laser sword.” (Edit forgot to add the word sword after laser)

To be honest I don’t care all that much. If you say jif or gift without the t, either way I know what you are talking about.

samus12345, (edited )
@samus12345@lemmy.world avatar

The problem isn’t people preferring to pronounce it gif or jif, it’s people saying that pronouncing it the other way is wrong. Both are acceptable.

Tristaniopsis,

Hahahahaha!

OMG what a terrible take.

One is CLEARLY and unambiguously WRONG, and to the point where it should be a public shaming event when it’s used.

Historically it doesn’t matter what the creator of anything prefers unless it’s an “unveiling” and they name it on the spot.

I can’t for the life of me find it now, but the gif was introduced with an image that contained in its metadata a statement that “it’s pronounced jif”. You can still find it somewhere and open it in notepad and read it for yourself.

No way, that’s awesome to learn. I will have to try and find it and see.

    SatanicNotMessianic,

People also like to argue it’s an acronym, but do you pronounce NASA the same as you pronounce the first letter of each word of National Aeronautics and Space Administration?

    Um, yes?

I’m assuming we’re talking about the two A letters here, since nothing comes to mind about a different pronunciation of N or S in American English.

In American English - at least in my experience - the first sound in aeronautics is exactly the same as in “air,” which is also the same as in “administration.” We don’t generally say it as in “ear-onautocs.”

Also, I’m curious - has anyone ever published a study describing whether or not the difference in pronunciation differs between sectors in the computer science community? Particularly, is there a difference between normal developers and those who write in a Lisp?

    lolcatnip,

No you don’t, unless you pronounce it like “nessa”.

    Sotuanduso,

If aer in aeronautics is pronounced like air, and the A in NASA is pronounced like the aer in aeronatucis, then NASA rhymes with mesa, not tessa.

I always pronounced NASA like naassuh, but I wanna try the mesa-rhyming version to mess with people.

    RandomGen1,

SCUBA, LASER, JPEG, ROM, etc. all break the “pronounced as the nested word” argument.

I’m down for people to pronounce it however they please (assuming it’s recognizable as gif), but the post-hoc rationalizations trying to prove their side as the one true pronunciation are silly. The only rationalization that makes any sense to me is the “creator pronounces it as jif”, but language doesn’t work that way so even that doesn’t matter as far as “one true pronunciation” goes.

    LeafOnTheWind,

The a in air is not pronounced the same as administration

    AlolanYoda,

To me, “gif” just looks like “gift” without the final “t”, which is why I pronounce it exactly the same until the t

I so agree. I admit there are a few celebrities that I like so much that I’d be interested in their life story a bit, but I’m absolutely not following news about them or really even interested in their kids or who they married. Even though those things are a part of them, I would be interested in their earlier life more – how did they become this person? Having said that, most biographies I have read have been snoozefests, sadly. Even when the person is insanely fascinating in an interview about their work, hearing about how they spent their summer in 1968 isn’t usually the most riveting story…

There’s a reason why kitchen appliances in general have such short 3ft cables. There also a reason why modern kitchens built to code have outlets every 3 ft. Too many people lburned the house down with extension cables strewn across the sink and electrocuted now we can’t have nice things.

    harmsy,

That’s why if you absolutely need an extension cable, you should get one that’s just long enough and can handle the current. I have my toaster oven on a heavy duty, 2 foot extension cord because the nearest outlet is just barely too far away. If the cord came out the other end of the toaster oven, I wouldn’t need the extension.

    Blackmist,

Which is why my toaster is now under a cupboard, making an entirely new fire hazard.

Note for the non-americans who use significantly better measuring systems.

    • Awg = american wire gauge, I.e wire diameter.
    • 18awg = 1mm diameter
    • 16 = 1.3mm
    • 14 = 1.6mm
    • 12 = 2.1mm
    • Yes smaller numbers are thicker wires.

Besides the electrocution hazard, another problem (in the US) is that someone allowed non fused 16 and 18 gauge extension cables on the market. We should only have 14 and 12 (or start putting fuses on the cords like some other countries)

14 should be for “light duty” like electronics or lamps. What you don’t tell people is that pretty much anything inside the house will run fine on 14awg wire.

    12 for everything “heavy duty”.

The idea is people use the same wire that matches what their breakers are rated for. A 20amp breaker doesn’t know that the 100ft 18 gauge extension cord feeding 3 surge protectors with every kitchen device and the “diy powered garage” is going to melt long before 20amps.

Is it overkill? yes. If you draw too much current will the wire overheat and burn down your house? Not if the breaker trips first.

    virku,

Your measuring systems never cease to amaze me. This one is even more confusing than measuring socket wrenches in fractal inches.

    helpImTrappedOnline,

Wait until you learn how we measure thin steel thickness.

    virku,

At this point I’m almost afraid to ask, but I guess I need to know. How do you measure thin steel thickness?

    helpImTrappedOnline, (edited )

    With the Sheet Metal Gauge!

It’s the same as wire gauge, but the scale is different per material!

    For steel

    • 16g = 1.5mm
    • 22g = .75mm
    • And so on

Pretty much anything larger than 1/8th of an inch (3.2mm), we just use the measurement (in inches).

Why? Because we don’t have a common measurement unit smaller than an inch. There probably is one, but no one commonly uses it. Coming up with a gauge scale is actually easier than say .0123 inch thick. Say “12 gauge wire” and everyone (who knows about it), knows exactly what you’re talking about.

Pretty much anything below 1/32 (0.8mm) of an inch, we’ll switch to decimals. 0.0001 inch is valid with no common way to make that neater. No such thing as 1 mili-inch.

Remind me, what is the cost of living in Europe?

    Magnetar,

No such thing as 1 mili-inch.

I thought you have “thou” (thousandth of an inch) for that?

    Xavienth,

There’s the “mil” which is just a thousandth of an inch, also called “thou”. Not really that rare, however sufficiently precise measurement equipment probably was rare when the gauge standards were conceived

    misophist,

Pretty much anything below 1/32 (0.8mm) of an inch, we’ll switch to decimals. 0.0001 inch is valid with no common way to make that neater. No such thing as 1 mili-inch.

.001" is a thou or mil (1/1000 of an inch). That is commonly understood in any industry that requires that precision and also doesn’t already work in metric by default. 0.0001 would be 0.1 thou, but honestly any time I’ve ever seen anybody need more precision than a whole number thou, they worked in microns or nanometers.

    virku,

Oh! I just remembered that the size of shotgun shell pellets are calculated that way. Take a fixed amount of lead and the gauge (we call it caliber) og the pellets is defined by how many of them you can make from that lump of lead.

Here in Norway it’s more expensive to live than ever. The interest is high and all other prices on have balooned this year, so the prices are too damn high. But I guess that is true for most countries.

Many people believe we are on the verge of a housing bubble bursting within a few years, so that might be a good time to relocate.

    Bene7rddso, (edited )

Sorry, but we don’t use wire diameter. We use cross section.

    • 18AWG = 0.8mm²
    • 16AWG = 1.3mm²
    • 14AWG = 2.1mm²
    • 12AWG = 3.3mm²

    Khrux,

It’s definitely an alternate history map, and I hope it’s an accurate potential map of an uncolonized North America if it’s cultures grew to nation state sizes.

I’m European so I’m not meaning to offend, but there’s something very interesting to me try to visualise how America could have grown without colonisation, and perhaps this is through my European lense but I’d imagine borders would move and groups would swallow eachother up. The scale of countries on this map is pretty comparable to what we see in Europe and Asia, but I don’t know enough about America to know if this is respectful to the placement and potential of Native American groups (e.g I think I’ve read before the the Comanche are a successful seperation from the Shoshone that was largely due to their expansion due to horses, which would have happened very differently sans colonisation), and I’m not even sure if this map follows natural borders like mountains and rivers, largely because I’m just not that familiar with America.

    GreenTeaRedFlag,

this map is complete nonsense because some of these groups only exist as a result of interactions with europeans, and even some of the other ones are from completely different places before europeans came in.

    Saeculum,

The Aztec empire being the dominant force on the continent could be a very unfortunate situation for everyone living there.
