You’re just going to hear mostly about the thing that’s making the people who are telling you the most money. This would be less of an issue if you had a truly independent media as opposed to a capital dependent one.
In Germany (and other parts of Europe), there are systems in place to prohibit dependence of the broadcasters On the government.
The Austrian broadcasting service (ORF) is known to be quite sceptical of the conservative government. The former chancellor of Austria actually wanted to coopt it, like Orban did in Hungary and failed to do so. That’s basically, why he’s the former chancellor.
You can compare it to the European Central Bank, or the FED.
It’s not resistant to nepotism, but it’s way better than the corporate hellscape you see in the US media.
It's quite telling that in Austria the far right wants to stop financing the ORF altogether by talking about how the population is forced to pay ORF fees and that it has a left wing bias.
The government is forcing the people to pay for the public broadcasting. That’s why they are inherently dependant on the government. Something that’s literally funded by the government can not be independent from the government.
I’m living in Germany actually. Don’t get me wrong, I like the ÖRR as alternative to private media. But to say it’s independent from the government is really naive.
Seems like the discourse has broken down to picking sides.
Hamas is a terrorist organization and does nothing to help the Palestinian people. Israel is indiscriminately leveling a city with absolutely zero regard for innocent lives.
Maybe this situation is full of nuance and grey areas that a single tweet or article or comic can’t fully encapsulate.
Hamas is the the elected ruling group of Palestine. Even referring to the current Israeli government and army as Israel, but then making a distinction between Hamas and Palestine is hypocritical.
They “governed” in the gaza strip, yes, but when was the last election exactly? In 2006 they got in power, then they murdered their political opponents and have kept their power through force ever since
Saying that they’re elected by and represent the people would be a bit of a stretch
Right, but folks say Israel is one, the whole nation, but Hamas is the other, they aren’t Palestine. The differenciation in one and not the other is hypocritical and problematic.
Say Palestine vs Israel, accepting that it’s assumed it their ruling body and army at war, and not the average people.
My killer is videogames, movies and TV shows and books. I bought a limited edition of Lord of the rings where it’s got gold leaf pages, coloured maps and is one volume and I’ve still been planning to read it 1-2 years later. It cost me 50-60 quid too.
I’m terribly sorry to inform you that it seems that we will be getting an even more complete extra extended edition for the 25th anniversary, at least that’s what Peter Jackson seems to be indicating in the commentary of the old extended edition.
The book is a good read, though The Two Towers drags a bit. I do wonder for people that saw the movies first, if you’ll be as offended as a certain subsection of the fandom that just cannot understand why they didn’t do a line by line recreation of the book. (Spoiler, it wouldn’t have translated to film very well.)
I read the fellowship years ago and ended up in a situation where I had all 3 books but they’re all different editions which annoyed me so I bought an all in one, the gilded pages and coloured maps and the extended glossary were all what sold me on the one I bought.
Instead let’s stay here till 2:30a playing dumb video game, become sleep deprived, and hate my entire existence in the morning even more than I already did
I remember 35. That’s exactly when I started feeling like I was actually in my 30s. Let me tell you, it just keeps going like that, and you’ll only realise how young you are years and years from now. Rinse and repeat.
This is the truth. I was being abused by a boss of mine, with him demanding to know the whole of my medical history. He also demanded doctor excuses go directly to him, and not HR as I was told,
Needless to say, HR shared that I was bitching about him and he messed up my desk, breaking an ornament and a knickknack that was precious to me at the time (I got it on honeymoon). I took photos, and HR even saw him near my desk at the time of all of that happened
It took a major civil suit to get the video, but after the judge saw it ‘my case was won’ according to the judge. It was so obvious of evidence of him breaking stuff, spitting on my chair, snapping my laptop.
I even got special consideration because my boss then gave me a laptop that was so old that I couldn’t load the required VPN software.
I’m glad I got out of a corporate run tech field. It’ll eat your soul without you noticing until it’s too late…
I have posted correct information like that on Reddit and have been downvoted for providing sourced information. That really discourages my participation. Why try?
I have to brag on Lemmy.world.
This place is friendlier, and a much better place to interact with others. Oh, there’s still a down-vote brigade, but it’s much smaller.
Reddit may still have a huge user base, but it’s becoming facebook-esque; that is, people go to it because they know it, and nothing else. This place is so much better.
I remember seeing this donut passed off as misinformation online where it was allegedly being distributed for free to children at Starbucks where it had Sharia law written on it.
Lmaaooo. I mean, why would that even matter anyway if they can’t read it? Do they think arabic is some sort of magical language that’ll cast a spell on their kids if they touch it?
Nah, listen, things can change. This may become a public transport commute, a walk, or you may not even go at all if you work from home. But what really sucks is when you are unemployed, and yes I speak from experience on all of these examples
I’ve been unemployed for two week and it doesn’t suck. I can do what I want when I want. What really sucks is eventually being broke after running out of money.
I assume different people have different needs, but I feel so much more content with life when I get up early and drive my bike to work/Uni. Having some structure forced onto me is just way easier than living from day to day. But I have also struggled with depression in the past, I may require it more than others do.
People that really enjoy being unemployed might have only had jobs that didn’t feel fulfilling or were degrading, annoying or whatever. I used to feel great without work, between jobs because I worked shitty places. Now I have a job doing more useful work with a better environment and it feels nice to be there.
I agree with the depression also, it’s easy for me to procrastinate and be unproductive and live more slovenly, but when I am working more it does force me into a bit better of a routine.
Maybe it’s because I lucked into a career that I can be content in but I would rather be employed than unemployed even if I was able to sustain myself through my unemployment. I’m happier if I have a job from which I can derive a sense of purpose and duty. If I was a multimillionaire, I would probably either volunteer or still be working.
Well, working for someone else and working for yourself is different i guess. Drawing cool characters and manga for myself than working for some company making garbage for social media. I don’t consider that 'work 'cuz I love it and have fun. It’s more of a playtime for me. I’m just saying I’d rather be doing that than making ads or editing corporate videos with that jarring background music all day.
It’s fun for the first few months. Catch up on games movies etc. Gets boring after a few months, most people need goals in life and find it hard to set them for themselves…
And what goals would I be getting done making advertisements to feed on people’s time? I felt like a zombie when I was working. I do understand that if you get a job you really love doing and don’t feel like what you’re putting in your time in isn’t pointless. But that kind of job is very hard to find, and you definitely can set goals for yourself. Opensource projects are a good example of that. Mangas, indie games, etc. You just need enough drugs to make it work.
It’s not impossible, but it can be hard. A job offers some obligated (often real life) social interaction. Might be annoying sometimes, but none at all isn’t healthy either. Many people really aren’t capable of setting goals for themselves, having their own business or networks etc. Most jobs offer more than money to an employee, the employee might not realise it themselves.
I’ve had two multi-month stretches of unemployment since the start of covid, and before that I was employed for 15+ years straight.
The “not working” part never got old. I am a chill person and a homebody so it was wonderful sometimes.
The part about not earning money, yeah that sucked. Living below our means for years made sure that the financial side wasn’t life-shattering, but it was still a huge hit.
Yeah I like my public transit commute with walk. Gives me a good 10 minute meditation time in the morning. Sure, I’d prefer to not have to go in, but it’s nice that it’s free for me to do that since the company has the unlimited pass.
In a modern title designed to be played at 60+, definitely. I’ve been having a blast in dark souls 1 and GTA:SA recently, both of which are capped at 30. Older games are made to work at that FPS, and it takes remarkably little time to adjust and have it feel normal. If I tried to play armored core at 30fps, on the other hand, I think I’d rip my teeth out in frustration.
Edit: misinterpreted the comment above as “unless it’s VR (i.e., in all cases except VR), you are not having fun” rather than “unless it’s VR, in which case you are not having fun.”
Fascinating! It never would have occurred to me that the sentence was worded ambiguously until you pointed it out, but your interpretation is 100% valid. English is a strange language.
The one that comes to mind for me is Privacy.com, though it’s a paid service. If you just want to have a random CC to get past those “we need a credit card to continue” paywalls, I recommend a fake person generator. They usually include a realistically fake CC
It’s worth noting that if you use privacy for free trials, they limit you to 3 cards linked to the same “merchant” (detected by the first transaction that goes through). After 3 cards you have to contact support to reset the limit for that merchant, so the single transaction cards are only good if you never want to shop there again because they immediately burn 1 use out of the limit.
