aeronmelon, in Target Acquired

People who want to be treated like human beings on an airplane are already not flying American Airlines.

pearsaltchocolatebar,

I don’t really care about airlines, but AA is the only airliner that flies out of the local regional airport (only flies to a bigger airport a few hours away), and I’ve never had any issues with them.

The worst I’ve had was having to listen to a flight attendent talk about God because I was on the last row.

TenderfootGungi,

We usually fly AA on flights to Europe. We live near KC, so our choices are AA or United (IIRC). And we prefer AA’s time schedule. Outside of major cities there is little choice to many destinations.

itsgroundhogdayagain, in Put me in the trash can at the park.

I had to pay the trash company to take an old couch. They sent over a special truck that ate that sofa bed in seconds and all that was left on the road were some wood splinters. That was when I knew how I wanted to be disposed of after I die.

I had one of my posts on AskLemmy deleted for being “offensive”. It was asking a silly question “Are Brits the Americans of Europe?”. Some saw the lighthearted side. The professionally offended got it deleted.

Over-moderation will kill Lemmy instances. One of the reasons Reddit became as big as it did is due to very light-touch moderation verging on “absolute freedom of speech”. It was refreshing and ‘alternative’ compared to the increasing sanitisation of the Internet.

Unfortunately Reddit-rotted Zoomers have jumped from the heavy-handed Reddit modding to Lemmy and will quickly fuck up any attempt to grow the platform. Because they don’t remember/know how early Reddit worked.

They’re trying to moderate Lemmy like it’s a billion-user platform when it’s a few hundred thousand.

Anon819450514,

Yup. The platform should feel alive.

I remember on Reddit when people were trying the limits and quirks of the algorithm, and you would wake up one day and your feed was filled with something totally unrelated. A few hours later and it went back to normal.

half_built_pyramids,

I say some spicy stuff now and then. Some gets hammered some not.

ArmokGoB,

Every platform should have some mechanism to remove troublesome moderators.

The_Vampire,

The whole point of the Reddit-style was that subreddits could be controlled by moderators and prevented from slipping into the same old tired town square-esque mess that arrives with popularity. I guarantee a mechanism to remove moderators would result in niche communities that get a surge in popularity winding up with the original moderators ousted because all the newcomers don’t understand the community.

If you don’t like how a community is run, you can start your own for completely free. That’s how this works, you shouldn’t be able to commandeer a community from the people who started it. If there’s a truly problematic moderator, the new community will grow quickly.

ArmokGoB,

The issue is that a community on any platform is made by the average users, not the moderators. If you splinter a community into three competing communities, you will probably severely damage its integrity as a whole. It’s similar to the issue that some Discord servers have, where they tell people to take discussion from the main channel into different channels. More often than not, this kills the discussion because few people actually move to a different channel, with most opting to drop the discussion entirely.

A few people shouldn’t have complete ownership over something that exists because the people under them make it so.

The_Vampire,

At the end of the day, it is the moderators who maintain and control the community. They control what users even see, so it’s not fair to say a community is made by the average user, the average user is completely silent. I would rather competing communities over every community being at the whim of the masses. The masses are easy to misguide.

Omega_Haxors, (edited )

Moderation desperately needs openness it is way too easy to get perm banned because you pissed one person off. No notification of what you did wrong, no explanation of what you did wrong, no chance at appeal, and to add insult to injury it permanently unsubscribes you.

That’s the sub not the website, over moderation is a feature of some subs, just like lemmy instances. Just like reddit, if you don’t like it create your own, unlike reddit you can set an overall tone to your instance.

FederatedSaint, in No! No! I don't want to conduct performance reviews! You can't make me!

It’s been tough switching from managing data and processes to managing people. But I make a LOT more money. It’s also nice not having to watch someone else make poor decisions all the time, but I guess now everyone else is now watching me make the poor decisions! 🤦‍♂️

xpinchx,

Yeah… I feel like I contributed so much more before but managing people, but this is where the money is sadly. I went from supply chain/purchasing/logistics manager to operations manager. I used to be a one man team and single handedly saved maybe $200k this year so far, and took our aged inventory from about $1M to basically nothing, all of our KPIs are primo. This is a company that pulls $10M/yr in revenue… small company.

I got rewarded with spending half my time babysitting the warehouse team, getting reamed by my boss when they’re not getting through things fast enough, and fixing their mistakes and bandaiding bad processes. But I got a 30% raise so I guess it’s worth it? I could be doing so much more.

xaxl, in They aren't, and I'm sick of being told they are

Australia is a live example of the fact that they’re not. The state and federal governments have privatised a crap load of services and all they do is continue to hike our bills while providing less and less service. Electricity, water supply, employment services and more are now an absolute joke here.

set_secret,

Yep because what’s more important than efficient, cost effective services? Spoiler, it’s profit.

xaxl,

Profit for their mates and fellow shareholders, not profit for the country either.

Shameless,

And they don’t update the infrastructure, UK is also an excellent example of this and they are getting to the point that the government will have to step in to help them sort things out. All this so that a bunch of rich people are richer.

xaxl,

Exactly what’s about to happen to employment services in Australia too. They spend more money chasing a hand full of people who don’t want to work than just continuing to pay them the pittance they exist on and have people apply to be the CEO of huge corporations who dropped out of high school in order to make their quotas. Government just announced an inquiry with the aim to reinstate control over it.

Shameless,

This reminds me of something I’d heard about public transport operated by local governments, not sure how true it is but the theory makes sense. But basically the local public transport company ran by the local government, spends more on the infrastructure and enforcement of people paying fares than they get back in the fares themselves and that operating the services free of charge would actually reduce the cost of running the service.

Which when you start to think about how you need officers to spot check people on public transport, roll out the machines for tickets/smart cards, server infrastructure to run the machines, technicians to service the machines, IT staff to run servers etc etc it does somewhat make sense

Heavybell,
@Heavybell@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, if not for when the Labor (sic) party got into power that one time, we’d all still be stuck on ADSL2 at best, and dialup at worst, depending on how close you live to a major-ish city. The NBN was a government infrastructure initiative. One which got gutted and watered down as soon as the Liberals got back in.

Oh, and I’ve heard industry insiders claim that the mixed technology stack employed in the “new NBN” – FTTP for some places that already got it, FTTN for everywhere else in the city, fixed wireless or satellite for rural areas – is more expensive on an ongoing basis due to complications than just rolling out more fibre would have been in the long run.

Speculater,
@Speculater@lemmy.world avatar

Not to mention the state of ISPs in Australia. I believe you pay more for less than almost every country. Two exceptions being the US and Canada.

One of my favorite search ads that appeared in the mid 2000s happened when I was bored. I searched “grandpa” without any context just to see what would come up, because I really was that bored. One of the ads that appeared was one of those where they just shove your search in the title verbatim so someone not paying attention might think it was what they wanted.

It said something like “Looking for grandpa? Find great deals here!” I don’t remember exactly what the second part said, but the “Looking for grandpa?” part made me bust out laughing. I then started searching other random stuff to try and get something equally stupid, but it didn’t capture me quite the same way. Either way, my boredom was alleviated.
