Unregulated capitalism that made worse by the lack of QOL improvements by the govt is what made these new shitty electronics and tools profitable.

Them: this is pretty good right? And affordable too!

Me: yeah it’s decent, don’t touch anything

Them: we’ve put in ads

Me: what? I don’t want ads, wtf

Them: bro, totally have you covered. No ads for $12.99 a month

Me: arr matey, don’t worry yerself 🦜🏴‍☠️

Omega_Haxors,
PersnickityPenguin,

Why does winamp now require ads and $12.99/ month to run?! It was free back in 1997!

Not sure if this is a serious comment, but in case it is, try foobar2k.

    I agree. I also think ads do influence us way more than almost anyone would believe or admit. Why else would companies spend hundreds of millions of dollars on ads without batting an eye. Many products cost as much or less than their ad campaign cost to make.

    So I try to avoid ads as much as possible. I haven’t seen or heard an ad in a long time aside from billboards and posters which are basically impossible to avoid.

    pthaloblue,

    Ads are basically paid graffiti

    RQG,
    @RQG@lemmy.world avatar

    There actually is paid graffiti. Most that I’ve seen looks absolutely awesome. It’s insane what a graffiti artist can do when they got plenty time and don’t have to watch out to not be caught.

    Zeozulu,

    You should check out Wynwood Walls if you ever find yourself in Miami, Florida. Blocks of amazing street art.

    mindbleach,
    Touching_Grass, (edited )

    I think they’re worse then that though. They attempt to manipulate and influence. Graffiti is just kind of there. Advertising attempts to look like its just there. All so it can actually pull tricks on you. Its a messed up industry.

    After all the ad industry is what spawned climate denialism and also spread confusion between cigarettes and cancer among other issues. Issues that we have to be convinced of otherwise we might actually make a better societal choice. Hell The grandfather of modern advertising Edward Bernays leveraged what he know of human nature and sub consciousness to build this industry.

    Sure almost all ads are benign individually. But as an industry they’re pretty evil. Hell if it wasn’t for ads, we wouldn’t have lost the internet to the shit show it is today. All the identity stealing, data collection and propaganda machines were spawned because we ignored the growing cancer that is online ads.

    When I grew up there was a big push to reject ads and corporate spread. Even sub cultures like punk was focused on rejecting that growing bullshit. Then it all stopped. Like the ads won and now you’re the insane one if you say that advertising is a major issue in society today. Now every kid wants their own sponsorships and some do get it.

    HowManyNimons,

    Ads are psychological abuse.

    IHaveTwoCows,

    The story of how Virginia Slims became the #1 cigarette for women is the story of pure, psychological sneaky evil.

    Destigmatize using credit cards to fund a lifestyle you can’t afford

    slazer2au,

    But what about all those reward points I am missing out on? If I spend big now, in a decade I may be able to cash them in on a shitty kettle.

    Gigan,
    @Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

    Credit card companies: “We’ll give you 1% cash back and charge 25% interest”

    Americans: “Wow 1%! This is a great deal!”

    Grayox,
    @Grayox@lemmy.ml avatar

    Existing is a lifestyle most cant afford at this point, but ok.

    Aux,

    Existing is free.

    Gigan,
    @Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

    If you can’t afford to exist you definitely shouldn’t have credit cards, because then you’re just existing with interest.

    Grayox,
    @Grayox@lemmy.ml avatar

    Hmm let me see, buy groceries on credit, or buy no groceries and starve to death, i guess I’ll juat starve to death lmao. Glad life is going well for you friend!

    Gigan,
    @Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

    If those are your only two options, buy the food. But let’s be honest here, Americans aren’t in $1 Trillion dollars of credit card debt because of groceries.

    Grayox,
    @Grayox@lemmy.ml avatar

    Nope, that would be because of rampant consumerism being sold as the solution to depression.

    Gigan,
    @Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

    I agree, but ultimately it is the individuals decision to engage in rampant consumerism and accumulate debt.

    Grayox,
    @Grayox@lemmy.ml avatar

    Yeah cause getting into crippling debt is a totally conscious choice /s lmao

    Gigan,
    @Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

    With the exception of debt from unexpected medical costs , yes it is a conscious choice.

    Grayox,
    @Grayox@lemmy.ml avatar

    Lmao no it isn’t.

    Gigan,
    @Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

    Could you elaborate?

    robotica,

    Unless your spending outweighs your earnings (in that case not even credit cards will help you), there is no reason to use credit.

    PeWu, (edited )

    I’ll play devil’s advocate here: I’m on the side with destigmatizing credit cards, as it just propels the bank’s wallets with interest. But if you don’t have money, and absolutely must get on credit to hang on to your life, I think you should, but you should also work toward repaying the debt you’ve grown.

    Edit: I’m actually curious as to why I got down voted, maybe I’m wrong somewhere, so take it with a grain of salt …

    Bluefruit,

    Really the only good thing about credit cards is it helps raise your credit score. I only use them for that to be able to get a decent apr on a loan.Otherwise i would never use them.

    uid0gid0,

    You gotta find a good one that gives travel rewards or something. We’ve had a few vacations with free flights because of ours. Of course you should only spend what you can pay off in a month but it still adds up

    TacoNissan,

    TRAVEL REWARDS??? We’re in a conversation about people starving, and you’re like “oh but this one gives you a free flight to Jamaica”

    Gigan,
    @Gigan@lemmy.world avatar

    There are more benefits to credit cards, but if you don’t pay them off every month pretty much all pros are massively outweighed by the cons.

    Sneptaur,
    @Sneptaur@pawb.social avatar

    People are being stupid in this thread and downvoting you. Credit cards are designed to make poor people SUFFER! There are better ways to avoid starving

    Bluefruit,

    Agreed. Food banks are literally designed for this scenario. They exist to help people put food on the table. Few scenarios actually require credit cards. No shame in accepting help when you need it. And you can always donate later when you’re on your feet. You cant ever give back if you’re dead from starvation.

    I use my debit card for almost everything and use my credit card for small things to keep the usage low if i use it at all.

    Bluefruit,

    True there are more. I just typically dont use it otherwise i would rack up more debt. Using my debit card is the best way for me to track my finances.

    The worst for me is the motorcycles one; half of the pictures are of motor scooters. Does it count those as motorcycles or is it counting on the user to know the difference because they’re not technically the same thing?

    Aloha_Alaska,

    I was about to make a similar comment but you beat me to it.

    It recently showed me a bicycle as part of “select all motorcycles” so I didn’t pick it. And I failed. Twice. Finally picked the bicycle and it let me through. Guess the computer knows best.

    The test isn’t the panels you click on, it tracks how your mouse pointer moves. Bots or robots tend to move in straight lines, whereas with humans, the pointer moves in a more random fashion. That’s how you pass.
