EvilTwin, in Time is cruel

I used to be with ‘it’, but then they changed what ‘it’ was.
Now, what I’m with isn’t ‘it’ anymore and what’s ‘it’ seems weird and scary.
It’ll happen to you!

GlitterInfection, (edited )

I think about this concept whenever I see the things kids are into and think “that’s stupid.”

It bothers me because I felt the same way when I was a kid and saw the things that kids were into then.

But now it’s supposedly because I’m old and not because kids are fucking stupid.

MajorHavoc,

But now it’s supposedly because I’m old and not because kids are fucking stupid.

As the saying goes, two things can be true! 😆

Source: Am old, and but I’ve thought kids are stupid since I was a kid, myself.

Daft_ish,

Thought old people were some how different when I was a kid. Am old now and know it’s no different from being a kid only people somehow think they have permission to be way more fucked up.

In London, Ontario, the city gave the transit commission $350M to spend on a new transit overhaul called Bus Rapid Transit (BRT). It was the best plan possible for our city as our streets are too narrow to accommodate light rail and we sit on swampland at a low altitude above sea level which prevents a subway from being built. All the commission had to do was pour concrete for new bus pads and widen a couple of streets to add in a dedicated bus lane.

They blew half the money on consultations, construction fuck ups, and removal of fuck ups in 2022. They never finished BRT, bought themselves a brand new HQ at a cost of $120M, and now in 2023, they’re saying they’re $175M overbudget on BRT.

No one in our city is talking about this.

And the album Homer was referring to was a Styx one, which likely came out in 84 at the newest, 12 years before the episode.

Like, you know, whatever.

Zenjal,

I was gonna say, isn’t the hullabalooza or whatever supposed to be '94. The episode is an oldies

I work at a grocery store. It’s been so busy with Thanksgiving and the holidays that this was literally me yesterday.

Moved to a cold climate after years in a desert

Me: why do the evergreens not lose there leaves?

My wife: EVER… GREEN. Ffs they’re coniferous

Sometimes I amaze myself with my own genius

XTornado,

Ah I see your confusion, Evergreen’s get stuck in canals, coniferous are the ones that get stuck with their leafs.

I found out because I was talking to my partner earlier “I don’t have work on Friday I’m not sure about Monday though I’ll need to check” “Monday is christmas I doubt you have work” “oh…”

Donjuanme, in Is nothing sacred?

Did they finally kill sobe? I used to chug that stuff as a kid, tried one a few years ago, not sure if it was always that sweet, or it went the way of most good indie (that was bought up by conglomerates) beverage distributors.

I drank nothing but “Green Tea (with ginseng)” growing up.

havokdj,

Arizona?

AHorseWithNoNeigh,
@AHorseWithNoNeigh@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Yes and SoBe. It was just a popular product for a lot of drink makers in the early 2000’s. Too much sugar for me now, though.

LemmyKnowsBest,

As a kid? You’re making me feel old. Sobe was invented when I was an adult.

DagonPie,
@DagonPie@kbin.social avatar

Dont worry im 30 and got called old for posting this in a discord im in.

Dee,
@Dee@lemmy.world avatar

As a 31 year old, it’s true. 30 is the mark when people are allowed to start calling you old. Welcome, tapioca is on the shelf.

Ataraxia,

I’m almost 40 and I’m sure sobe was around when I was in school

Donjuanme,

Sobe first came on my radar around 2000, imma look it up for it, because I feel you aren’t that old… Idk maybe you are old, founded in 96, bought by Pepsi in 2000.

ElderWendigo,

It was always that sweet. Everything we drank as kids was SUPER sweet, mostly still is. Once you break the sugar addiction and try those things again later the sweetness is shocking.

FireRetardant,

I quit drinking pop in my late teens to early 20s. It is genuinely difficult for me to finish a single can of pop now, no idea how I drank 2 litres of it a day as a kid without getting fat or diabetic.

@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

I’ve had truly instant ramen when my friend’s brother came back from Japan. Dude brought a bunch of cool shit back, including a few cases of self heating ramen and a carton of self lighting cigarettes. Japan is like 500 years in the future.

Jyrdano,

The future as imagined 30 years ago.

Agent641,

The correct future. Not this corpro-dystopian bullshit

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I sincerely hope people aren’t still smoking cigarettes in 500 years.

sturmblast,

Humanity will always find a way to harm itself.

LotrOrc,

Let people drink/smoke

Obviously don’t let people drive drunk and have specific areas for smokers in public places

But if you’re chilling at your house or apartment and want to smoke one outside that shouldn’t be illegal

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not stopping anyone from smoking. I just hope people have given up such a dangerous and stupid habit by the 26th century.

LotrOrc,

Do you think they should give up drinking as well?

Two things humans have been doing as a species for over 5 thousand years?

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Are you really arguing in favor of smoking cigarettes?

LotrOrc,

No I’m saying it should be people’s choice whether or not they want to

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

And no one said otherwise.

Kolanaki, (edited )
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

They’re gonna be those reverse ones from The 5th Element and the government limits how many you can have a day.

Or maybe cancer itself is eradicated and smoking isn’t dangerous anymore 🤷🏻‍♂️

Ah I remember that scene-- I just didn’t think it was cheap enough to actually make sense to use in the real world. I wonder where they’re sold bc I don’t think I’ve run across one in the wild.

The are existing self heating ramens by using the same tech USA army warms their MRE “just add water” no matter temperature

Sunfoil,

Exothermic chemical reaction heats the food, like modern military MREs

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

There is a chemical heating element at the bottom of the cup. You add water, pull a string, and it will boil the water without a stove/microwave.

x4740N,
@x4740N@lemmy.world avatar

It’s a thing, I just looked it up

tigeruppercut,

I just don’t know where you find it. I’ve been in Japan for years and never run across it.
