So move off of the planet. Got it

This needs to be handled by browsers. At this point when any website asks me the same thing in a huge page blocking pop up that I’ve already went through the settings for a hundred times over, I’m just leaving the site.

henfredemars,

I’ve got third-party cookies disabled entirely. I click whatever makes the dialogue go away faster.

WarmSoda, (edited )

What mobile browser do you use? I use FF but the damn pop ups always seem to want to take multiple steps before they go away.

lurch,

There are sites that respect the “do not track” setting of the browser and just display a small timed info on your first visit that cookies have been rejected. Examples: geizhals.eu , geizhals.de

Sometimes it takes my brain a moment to realize that what you’ve said to me is actually Words and to assign a Meaning to those words, and that you haven’t just done the human equivalent of when the Roomba drives back onto the charger.

This, but also if you talk constantly, to yourselves and animals, don’t get mad when people tune out the incessant chatter.

Looking at my SO on this one.

Rediphile, in One of the most annoying things on the Internet

Everything done to make the Internet ‘safer’ and/or more clear to idiots has made it worse for anyone competent. The ability to control cookies was always there and worked completely fine since the 90s.

Forced two factor authentication is another one. I literally never had any issues before two-factor because I just used different unique passwords and didn’t share them with anyone. I have never been ‘hacked’ even once for 20+ years online. But now, I have issues when travelling and using a local sim with a different number when email authentication isn’t permitted. And all to protect idiots who use ‘hunter2’ for their password across all systems and then act like some elite hacker cracked their code.

I’ve since just set up a voip number purely for two factor phone number based authentication, but it’s annoying I was forced to do that instead of being given the option through and opt-in system.

andrew_bidlaw,
@andrew_bidlaw@sh.itjust.works avatar

The phone number is the best way to ID user across different sources of data. Facebook created datapoints for those who aren’t even on Facebook, but are in some users’ phonebooks. In my country you get a SIM-card only with your documents, so alphabet agencies have an even better idea who are you on the web.

It’s all just scam that pushed without any conaideration for our convinience.

Anticorp,

I really hate the forced 2fa on shitty little sites that nobody would care to hack. I also really hate that just about every site and service requires you to give them your phone number now, which of course they immediately start spamming, and you have to send a text to a short code, which might have hidden charges associated with it, to opt out. I don’t want anyone having my phone number, but you have to give it if you want service. That VoIP idea you have is great.

theneverfox,

I care. Short form video is extremely addictive. It’s dangerous to open it up, if you watch a second video you just end up in a doomscroll trance

markon,

Well that’s just capitalism. Just like the rise of sugary drinks and booze cigs etc. We’re not optimizing for the well-being of people. It’s all about that dough. China is the same, but instead it’s just one big extra shitty company.

LuckingFurker,

Fair, though to my mind that’s all social media, so I can’t get worked up about one particular one. The reason I’m glad I was pushed off reddit is because I’d end up in a doomscroll trance there too

theneverfox,
@theneverfox@pawb.social avatar

There’s degrees to be sure though - ticktock is the absolute worst, because it has a lot of content and a good algorithm… Plus, short form video is the easiest to get lost in

LuckingFurker,

I think it’s an individual thing, and probably also dependent on said individuals state of mind. I dropped off TikTok ages ago because of its tendency to get me lost, with reddit I didn’t entirely know how bad it was until the blackout happened and I noticed how often I would just compulsively reach for my phone to open reddit when I wasn’t doing anything else

BananaPeal, (edited ) in EDIT: I THINK I STAND CORRECTED
@BananaPeal@sh.itjust.works avatar

The reason infinity $100 bills is more valuable than infinity $1 bills: it takes less effort to utilize the money.

Let’s say you want to buy a $275,000 Lamborghini. With $1 bills, you have to transport 275,000 notes to pay for it. That will take time and energy. With $100 bills, you have to transport 2750 notes. That’s 100x fewer, resulting in a more valuable use of time and energy.

Even if you had a magical wallet that weighed the same as a standard wallet and always a had bills of that type available to pull out when you reach in. It’s less energy to reach in a fewer number of times.

Let’s toss in the perspective of the person receiving the money, too. Wouldn’t you rather deal with 2750 notes over 275,000, if it meant the same monetary value? If you keep paying in ones, people will get annoyed. Being seen favorably has value.

Value is about more than money.

superbirra,

very nice! But very OT tho

nexguy,
@nexguy@lemmy.world avatar

You couldn’t buy that car with either denomination since money would have zero value now… and also the universe would collapse in on itself… but mainly the zero value thing.

Breve,

Fair, but there’s also a lot of businesses that don’t accept $100 bills which would make paying for smaller everyday things annoying, and realistically I don’t think any car dealership would want to deal with 2,750 $100 bills either. Besides, with infinite money you could hire people to count and move the money for you, if it’s $1 bills instead of $100 bills you simply hire 100 times as many people!

dingus, (edited )

I think it would be easier to go to thebank now and then to exchange some of your $100 for lower value bills than to do the opposite.

Besides, if there are places that don’t take bills less than $20, there are a lot of places that aren’t going to let you pay with only $1 bills. I can’t imagine a car dealership letting you do that. Or if you want to buy a home, etc.

How’s this for simple: your kid has a higher chance of dying from measles than from the vaccine, even when you assume all conspiracy theories are correct.

Ephera,

If those antivaxxers felt confident about statistics, they’d be very upset.

I mean, the lottery and gambling just wouldn’t exist, if people generally took statistics to heart.

AA5B, (edited )

At least with the lottery, my $2 buys a day or two of some fantastic daydreams. Can an anti vaxxer excitedly say “I WOULD GIVE EACH OF YOU A MILLION DOLLARS AND MAKE MY TOWN LIBRARY THE GREATEST IN THE STATE!!”

UnfortunateShort,

There are also lotteries that spend most of the money on charity. Worst case you do something good with most of the money you put in. Nothing wrong with that

Ephera,

I’m not arguing whether anything is wrong with it or not. You could literally be shredding bank notes as a hobby. If it makes you happy, I’m not arguing against.

I’m rather saying someone who’s confident in statistics doesn’t need arguing here. They’ll intrinsically know the chance of winning is effectively 0. As such, they assume that their money will go to charity. But since the lottery company keeps a cut as profit, giving it this way is just worse than giving to charity directly.

Ephera,

The reward is less exciting, but there is also a more realistic chance of you actually getting lucky by not getting measles.

And if you assume yourself to get lucky, then even just getting poked with a needle, will in your mind add a risk rather than mitigate it…
