Did you know that you can be a landlord too, even if you can’t afford a whole house? There’s such a thing as a REIT (real estate investment trust) where you can buy shares in a company that owns and rents out real estate and sends you your share of the profits while you don’t have to do anything except give up the option to invest that money somewhere else, which is actually really important.

I don’t expect everyone here to be able to invest in the stock market; my point is that there are easy ways for even middle-class people to obtain income from rent and yet most of them aren’t doing that because other types of investments are usually better for them. Being a landlord is not some unique source of money for nothing; it’s one of many ways to invest your money in a productive asset and usually not the best one.

Anti-social Rent-seeking Behavior For Dummies

ArbitraryValue,

Did you read the article that you’re linking to? Rent seeking in the economic sense does not mean purchasing property in order to rent it out to tenants.

Mango,

Money for nothing. Read it again yourself genius. What part of purchasing property to rent it out makes you think you’re getting money for creating value?

VikingHippie,

Rent seeking in the economic sense does not ONLY mean purchasing property in order to rent it out to tenants.

Fixed it for you. Landlording is one of many forms of “growing one’s existing wealth without creating new wealth”

ArbitraryValue,

Renting out property does create wealth. Think of a house as a factory that produces shelter. Running the factory, as opposed to leaving it idle, increases the amount of shelter in the world, and shelter is a form of wealth.

ThrowawayPermanente,

Building a house creates wealth. Owning the land underneath it does not, it merely captures a portion of the wealth produced by others.

ArbitraryValue,

That’s a well-established economic theory and I’m not contradicting it. What I’m saying is that renting out the house after it’s built continues to create wealth. A world in which I build a nice house but keep it empty is wealthier than a world in which I leave the land unimproved, but a world where I rent that house out (or live in it myself) is wealthier still. The experience of living in that house, as opposed to some inferior option, has value.

Apollo,

Those people looking for rent couldn’t possibly be rent seeking!

Lucidlethargy, in The system is broken

My landlord keeps getting violations from the HOA, and the HOA is straight up making rules up. I can’t sue the HOA for this (which is 100% what needs to happen to get them to stop), because there’s a legal layer between the owner and the tenant…

So yes, shit is broken. He refuses to call them out or take legal action against their harassment of my family. This is really obvious stuff, too. The latest violation involves them accusing me of having open flame torches on my patio. I own solar powered LED lanterns. They want to fine my landlord $100 for this.

I told him I won’t pay it. They are charging HIM, not me, and there’s nothing in my lease or the HOA’s CC&R’s saying I can’t own solar lanterns.

This guy has violated state, federal, and city laws over the last half a decade. He’s also a slumlord that never fixes anything. He once made me wait a year to get my front door handle repaired (sure, I could have fought that, but then he’d have just raised my rent.)

I hope he gets fined, and I hope he fucks around, because I’ve got an attorney ready.

I’m not saying to never take shit from your landlords, everyone… But at some point you have to stand up and tell them to fuck off. Rent is out of control in many cities right now, but that’s not an excuse for the often abusive landlord-tenant systems. Landlords should NOT exist.

paradiso,

I’m sorry you’re having to go through that. I’ve had a nightmare landlord before and it really fucks with your mental wellbeing. Best of luck to you!

Ookami38,

Nah, never take shit from your landlord. They’re expendable leeches on society.

psud,

Landlords should NOT exist.

There is the Georgism position where rent is discouraged with tax which is set to share out society’s share of the value of limited natural resources

It’s hard to run a civilisation without landlords, since some people are not in a position to buy land and need to borrow it.

abraxas, (edited )

since some people are not in a position to buy land and need to borrow it.

Some people have no desire to buy land, and want to borrow it. More than half the people I know (and I’m in my 40s now) have no desire to hold the liability of needing to sell a property to be able to move halfway across the country or world. They don’t “own” their, so they see having to literally own it as a problem. And they are willing to pay more in rent than a mortgage (which happens regularly in some areas around me).

There are shit landlords, and there are decent landlords. I think half the problem is that while some areas have great protection for poor renters, they often don’t have great holistic renter protections. In my state, for example, government-subsidized rentals have the most apartment quality regulations. But after that, you’re expected to leverage your rent to force action… without actually withholding it in any way somehow. And small business rentals? Even worse. I have a buddy who runs a breakfast joint. The heating system in the building died, so the landlord said “well if you want to stay open in the winter you should fix that”. So he installed a minisplit and the other business in the building had to close for the winter. Ultimately, both businesses started withholding rent (against lawyer’s advice) and he finally caved and called his renters “cheap bastards” as he got heating installed (and it was like a comedy that the heating company walked out on him twice for his after-contract renegotiations).

I’m ok with someone owning and renting out a building. But it should be somewhere near the level of quality the renter would maintain the place if they owned it.

Mango,

If there’s more need to sell land then land prices will inevitably go down. Then everything gets better. At that point, we can afford to have multiple properties while trying to sell.

ChickenLadyLovesLife,

I just bought a house from a guy who had been renting it out for thirty years and I’m now in the process of fixing all the shit he neglected during that time. I can’t believe that anyone was willing to rent this place for any amount of money, let alone the $1300/mo he had been getting for it. The kitchen ceiling was sagging down a foot in two places and held up literally only by the paint and caulk, thanks to mice - I got showered with mouse poop and urine-soaked ceiling tile material when I demo’ed it. The electrical outlets were all partially blocked by the baseboard radiators, which was probably a good thing because they were all ungrounded 1940s-era receptacles with the hot and neutral wires hooked up in reverse. One light switch caused the circuit breaker to trip as soon as I flipped it. Not a single door in the house could actually be closed (not even the front door) so I had to reset the hinges; one door looked like he had tried to fix the problem using a beaver with dental problems.

He sold the house as “rental ready” and I’m five months into the renovation now. I like to think the house appreciates my being here.

So, one way my ADHD manifests is that my brain will just fucking fumble incoming sounds, particularly if I’m not paying attention beforehand. I’ve been near someone who just turned on the radio to the middle of a song and the music made no sense to me at all, like, it was just really weird noise that sounded like it should make sense but didn’t, until it suddenly clicked and the music made sense again. With words, it happens all the time. Someone will just ambush me with words and instead of “hey, can you put the cap on the blender?” It becomes “hey, can you pole a cat fender?” Or sometimes it becomes just “dsfargeg”. I know that nobody would say either of those things to me, so I use a dual track strategy of both playing with what I think I heard to try and make it make sense as well as asking the other person to repeat themselves. Sometimes, I work it out before they repeat it, sometimes I don’t.

ZOSTED,

I think you’re fine because this sounds totally normal to me

conditional_soup,

Maybe, but it happens a lot less (that is, not at all) when I’m on my medication.

cashews_best_nut,

I’ve done this all my life - I don’t have ADHD.

conditional_soup, (edited )

It isn’t necessarily the case that everyone who does this has ADHD, nor that everyone with ADHD has this as a symptom. You could just have an auditory processing thing. For me, I think it’s related to my ADHD because it doesn’t happen when I’m on medication for it.

VaultBoyNewVegas,

I’ve never misheard things with ADHD but I do regularly ask people to repeat things and it’s not that I haven’t heard but it’s like my brain hasn’t fully processed and understood what I’ve just heard. So when someone starts saying what they’ve just said, my brain has finished processing everything.

can,

Exactly. It’s like my (sub)concious was already at least three threads removed from reality and I need to bounce back into the real world to process.

dojan,
@dojan@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t have ADHD but I experience this too. Audio processing disorder.

Sometimes I realise what’s been said after a second or so, other times I can’t figure it out. My go to solution is to just repeat what I’ve heard. It usually gets kind of funny so it takes the annoyance out of it.

flicker,

My ADHD manifests this way as well and I explain it as, “I’m sorry, I didn’t understand English just then.” I only speak one language but it’s true, I couldn’t parse their language.

I also picked up a “quirky” habit where I’ll say the nonsense phrase back at the person, who gets a laugh, then repeats themselves. Since it seems like I’m being cute and quirky instead of having an auditory processing disorder, people don’t get annoyed as often.

Malfeasant,

I’ll say the nonsense phrase back at the person

Tiktok sucks so hard, but then occasionally I find a minor nugget of wisdom or a piece of information so helpful that it makes me keep the app. Just the other day, some said he applies antiperspirant to his feet in order to keep them warm, because then they’ll sweat less, and will get less cold in the socks. I didn’t even really know that was a problem I was really having, but now, I will never have cold feet again. There’s also always eelfeel, so I’m alright with it as a whole.

More broadly I do hate how kind of walled off the app is. I try to share videos on snapchat, oof, snapchat cuts it off so it’s only the first five seconds of a video. Best to send the link, but then, if you don’t have tiktok downloaded, it takes you either to the app store, or it hits you with the shitty web browser. Maybe fine for seeing a single tiktok, on mobile, but it’s pretty bad on desktop since it’s not formatted for it, and overall it, just is kind of ass to deal with, especially on repeat. Hate the modern internet.

Did something about Lemmy make you think we avoid the truth here?

daltotron,

This shit is Vine. We had this same social media platform in 2013, basically. Everyone’s just freaking out about it now because it’s owned by china, and everyone’s been made to worry about threats to national security, even though we can all kind of agree that the american government also sucks and is heinous. It’s giving me some “Only I can bully my little brother!” kinds of vibes. It’s like the same shit as when europeans get brought up, at any point, anywhere, and then americans start making fun of british people having bad teeth and knife crime and stuff, even though they have basically all of that but worse. Nobody’s a nationalist until another country gets brought up, and then suddenly everyone’s the most patriotic proud to be an american motherfucker. It’s cringe. It reminds me of when we started calling them “freedom fries”.

TrickDacy,
@TrickDacy@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah I’ve heard all this before. Basically you’re advocating for people to opt into spying because their own government does it. No thanks

daltotron,

Yeah I think that would be cool. I think we should all be spied on. I think we should all submit everything we’ve ever done to every authority. Every time I’m taking a shit, I record a small video and save it to my publically active telegram channel that’s full of dead al-qaeda members and federal agents posing as them. So dictates the holy doctrine.

If you want to have a lot of fun, you can let the chinese government and the US government spy on you at the same time!

I dunno, it’s moreso the fact that people don’t bring up how every other web service is spyware whenever they get brought up. You get a fair number of those complaints, and more on lemmy, where everyone is a linux focused privacy psycho, sure, but I think the disproportionate level of shit flung at tiktok isn’t really organic, and people aren’t judging the app on the actual merit of the thing. If you wanted to, you could pretty easily fling shit at tiktok on the basis that you can’t really control what it is you’re watching at all, and so it can very easily take advantage of people who have no self control. You could judge it on the basis that they implement policies to curate their content pretty heavily to be more attractive (eliminate the uglies). You could judge it on the basis that the platform basically has no active moderation to police speech and will allow very obviously white supremacist and conspiratorial content to flourish. All of those are pretty true criticisms.

But instead, people don’t know what the fuck they’re talking about, and they just want to fearmonger about chinese invasion some more. What I’m saying is that the claims spiral into shit like all the kids being brainwashed, on the basis that china has it’s own tiktok, doyun or whatever, you know, when that doesn’t make any fucking sense and those two ideas aren’t really logically connected. China has it’s own everything, for the most part, they exist behind a curtain. Obviously, if they have their own tiktok, which no duh they will, it’s gonna be controlled by the chinese government, and then the chinese government is gonna spin that so their censorship is for the good of the people and for the good of the kids. But then instead, people will accept that claim at face value, and use it to turn around and say that the chinese are brainwashing our kids, when ironically they’ve just bought chinese propaganda. That’s the type of shit I’m talking about. There’s no like, measurement, or self-awareness, of what actually there is to hate about china, people just end up kind of talking shit based on the points that they’ve been fed by propagandists who benefit from their ignorance. People would just as easily hate tiktok if it was censored by the chinese on the basis that “this content isn’t beneficial to society, this content is” type shit, and people actually do already criticize tiktok for that because they’re full of shit and can’t make up their mind and believe the app to basically just be controlled by some foreign red menace government.

Do you see where I’m coming from? People that aren’t willing to actually understand the shit they’re talking about, they just hear a surface level narrative and then decide to parrot that unflinchingly, and then, duh, of course that narrative is gonna be a tool to, in this instance, try to take a bite out of a foreign company in order to get them more tapped into US intelligence, and allow US intelligence more access to their data, while at the same time providing US business interests with a neat and shiny new toy.

markon, (edited )

It’s so silly. Lol like Google can hand over everything to the feds and they can harass you, arrest you for dumb shit, fuck with your family, jobs etc. China can’t do much to me over here. Plus if they wanna spy on me they can just see what’s already public. I’ve never seen evidence TikTok actually gathers or sends anything off that Meta/Facebook or Google does. I mean, can’t these people run a packet capture program? Jeez. Smartphones are corporate controlled spy devices already, so if you’re using one you’re already pretty blown. The problem isn’t TikTok, or the CCP spying on Americans. It’s the spying itself no matter who’s doing it. Plus fucking Blackrock owns 40% of Bytedance. We got our hands in everything. Anyone who thinks the US government can be trusted more than China, and lives in the US is insane. Unless you’re Chinese and have family over there. Then it’s a real problem.

Anyway. Who’s more likely to give the feds everything? China or Google. I don’t think China will give them shit. It’s a moot point anyway because most of US TikTok is handled by servers in the US by a legal US corporation (owned by Bytedance of course). When Blackrock owns 40% though why are we even talking about this stupid shit. It’s a distraction from all the companies and gov here in merica’ fucking us. The CCP sucks ass, they’re horrible, I don’t really trust Bytedance with my data, but I don’t trust Google either.

I don’t get it. Just seems like a bunch of grumpy old millennials. I’d hoped we would be different.

Some will argue (and I do not know if it is true) that that is what triggered inflation now. Well, that, plus business loans during covid.

Others will argue that corporate greed was the cause of inflation, and they’d point to plenty of companies making record profits while raising their prices.

    As for the topic of discussion, you have to learn the meaning of the word “trigger”. Also, your analogy does not stand at all, because I was not claiming that corporate greed is good, just that it is not the trigger.

    RufusFirefly,
    @RufusFirefly@lemmy.world avatar

    No need for ad hominem attacks. Profiteering has always been a part of inflation but it’s never the cause or the underlying reason that inflation occurs. There are a host of things that go into what drives inflation but during Covid it was the Fed dumping tons of money into the system and post Covid it was wage inflation and low unemployment. Do corporations still use predatory pricing? You bet. The only thing that will really work now is either very deep recession or a depression.

    Saurok,
    Passerby6497, (edited )

    So, because it always existed, it’s not possible for it to have gotten worse and contributed more to the problem?

    MxM111,
    @MxM111@kbin.social avatar

    That’s different. That money is the federal reserve printing, well, money and exchanging it for existing securities. They can always get money back in exchange for those securities if there is money oversupply. It is reversible.

    When federal government spends more money than it has, there is no reverse mechanism, because the government does not get securities in exchange of new money it introduced to economy.

    grte, (edited )

    Yeah, I bet. Did they? Reverse it?

    MxM111,
    @MxM111@kbin.social avatar

    Yes, that's what the high fed rate means - they are taking it back, but because it was combination of the what Federal Reserve printed and the USGov "printed", there is disbalance, and the rates end up too high, thus inflation.

    markon,

    Don’t forget Money Center banks like BofA went from 10% fractional reserve (they needed to theoretically have 10% of the amount they were lending) to 0%. That’s just a fancy way of saying they can print money by fiat just like the Fed does. The Fed is weird though because it may as well be owned by the banks as well, but the head of the Fed is appointed by the president.

    There are arguments though that given our somewhat teetering system that they did some “goodish” things to prevent all out collapse. Their actions have not changed anything systemic though, and the system it’s arguably the problem.

    MxM111,
    @MxM111@kbin.social avatar

    I am not quite sure how big the impact of it is on inflation. I thought even before, banks could just go and take cash from federal reserve (borrow), essentially unlimited amount and that counted as reserve. So, from practical point of view, if they saw that they can lend the money with foot risk/benefit profile, they could always do that. And they would not have to pay rate for the money which is in reserve. So, not quite sure if inflation depends on this much.

    markon,

    I think this is a reasonable argument. A lot of it seems to just have been companies using inflation as an excuse to raise prices causing more inflation.
