rimjob_rainer, in And thus my subtitle requirement was born

If you make a movie you make it with multiple audio tracks (lines), often there are dozens of lines for cinemas and more for IMAX. If you mix all those lines together, e.g. to 5.1 for home cinema you’ll lose dynamic range. Now if you mix it into 2 lines (stereo) this means you basically have everything (explosion, whispers) on the same two lines for left and right and that’s why you either need at least a front speaker for dialogue (so only effects are muddy but voices are clear) or bear with it.

gamermanh,
@gamermanh@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Or studios could go back to properly mixing their audio when making versions for home setups

rimjob_rainer,

They do for 5.1, which is a pretty common home setup, even 3.0 or 3.1 works quite okay with it. How many people do actually watch movies with a stereo setup nowadays?

OnlyTakesLs,

Anyone with a perfectly good tv that doesnt need a sound system.

rimjob_rainer,

There are no TVs with built in speakers which don’t sound like a tin can.

rolaulten,

Everyone with a sound bar. Depending on the sound bar you might have a dedicated base - but you might not.

rimjob_rainer,

Most sound bars have more than 2 channels nowadays.

rolaulten,

Really? TIL.

starman2112,
@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

Most people I know use their TV speakers. Maybe sound engineers should engineer the sound so that it sounds good in stereo OR 5.1

Kethal,

I have a center channel. New shows sound like crap. Old ones sound great. It’s not people’s equipment.

This is why I turn on the audio normalization on my TV. It makes the explosions sound super weird but it’s impossible to watch movies with kids sleeping otherwise. The mixing is so bad.

hglman,

The mixing isn’t for your home. Which it obviously should be.

victorz,

Watching TV is also shit. When an ad break comes, I have to mute the sound or turn down the volume, regardless of normalization. That should be illegal in my opinion but it’s the status quo.

Sabin10,

I pirate the absolute shit out of Nintendo games and everything else. My issue isn’t with the piracy, it’s with people profiting off of piracy. Those people can get fucked and I love to see it.

TheMightyCanuck,
@TheMightyCanuck@sh.itjust.works avatar

So your base issue isn’t theft… it’s rampant capitalism?

Sabin10,

More like a strict belief that piracy should be free. In Gary’s case, charging money for sxos and adding DRM to it is what really bothers me though I will admit that I don’t like the precedence this case sets.

pivot_root,

A friendly reminder: SxOS is a mostly ripped off version of the FOSS CFW, Atmosphere.

I don’t care that they sold hardware for a profit, but they can go fuck themselves for TIVOing open source software and pretending it was all their own original work.

TopRamenBinLaden, (edited )

You must be on a speedrun for downvotes to leave that comment on Lemmy of all places.

Sabin10,

I’ll take my lumps in this case. Gary Bowser is a piece of trash for a plethora of reasons. The precedence this case sets is honestly pretty terrible but the punishment couldnt have happened to a better person.

Caradoc879,

What are those reasons? What precedent does it set?

starman2112,

He should be made to repay Nintendo for every dollar they can prove he cost them

evranch,

I would agree in the case of reselling pirated content, as a core piracy principle is that data itself has no value and can be given away for free. Once you start selling it, you’re just a thief.

But he was part of a modchip team selling physical hardware. They manufactured a real product that was not itself pirated, and users had the choice to use the devices for homebrew or even to not install them at all.

This case is literally like blaming a gun manufacturer for murder.

Sotuanduso,

data itself has no value

Programming: the art of creating worthless things and still getting paid for it.

evranch,

Well, no cost to replicate, anyways. I’m a strong believer that if you get value from something you should pay for it, but in my youth I did pirate a lot of games and media because I didn’t have the disposable income for it. No sales were lost.

I still do pirate games I own. My daughter pretty much has exclusive use of my Switch now so I play my Switch games on PC. Honestly I will buy games and then never play the official copy, and download the ROMs to run at 1440/120FPS on PC.

Ironic that Xecuter got busted for Switch modchips when emulators now do a better job than the Switch itself.

Sotuanduso,

I also only pirate games I own, though for slightly different reasons. I don’t think you should pay for everything you get value from (I don’t [directly] pay people back for gifts, for example,) but I do think it’s theft to pirate a game you never bought. Plus, buying games is how you support the developers.

agitatedpotato,

Kind of makes sense if you view the program as a service. Many programs could be interpreted as contained, executable, repeatable services. Either way they’re so abstract compared to lots of other goods and services that they’re gonna be their own niche kind of commodity anyway.

On the one hand, you’re not wrong. On the other hand, the way people say that line…it’s as if you go to Kroger or Alberson’s or Target, and see some kind of massive reduction in the number of derelict-ass, unhinged, pajama-clad, whacka-doodle mofos, in their aisles.

That’s a big nuh-uh, chief. If they let you in off the street, without a membership card, and they sell regular-ass groceries, there’s going to be a bunch of semi-washed, pseudo-clothed semi-apes, up in there.

And, honestly, I’m not against it. Pretention is boring. I like my crazy people up-front and straightforward. There’s just as many barely-functional nutjobs at your local country club. They have just leveled up their skill in concealing their situation. That’s both more dangerous AND less fun.

Well, on Twitch and YouTube and Reddit, I’m settled.

On Twitch, I never visit front-page. I follow the channels I follow.

On YouTube, I watch the subscribed channels (and recommend videos. If good, I follow).

Reddit, I don’t visit All or Popular. I have the subreddits I wanna follow.

On Lemmy, it’s so new that I haven’t found all the places, so I go to All on Local and see what’s up - like I do now.

dumpsterlid, (edited )

Yeah, I do a similar thing with youtube and reddit. I am interested in communities of humans I like curating content and conversations. I am less interested in a robot doing so, even if it wasn’t a crap advertisement and engagement robot.

I am interested in the humans and I find it infuriating how often these websites try to shove what the robots want me to engage with down my throat while hiding access to the humans/communities I am interested in so I always have to click through to see it.

variants,

Yeah for that reason I just have my YouTube subscription download and go to my plex server so I don’t have to deal with ads or algorithms and we have a discord channel where we share interesting videos so I find a lot of my content that way. For reddit I just stopped going there after the exodus except when doing searches and I can’t find what I’m looking for I’ll add reddit to the search query to see the comments and hope there’s an answer there

Vespair, in The current state of Twitch

There’s still tons of video game streamers. In fact, even if 10k titty streamers join the site, that doesn’t push even a single video game streamer out.

There’s a market for both things, and neither thing is eating the audience of the other.

This is all just stupid neo-puritanical pearl clutching.

A woman showing her tits on twitch isn’t going to hurt you, or anyone else.

bmarinov,

You know, I don’t get offended or anything. But it’s impossible to mute / block streamers, and there are some particularly annoying offenders which I just don’t want to see when I open twitch. Just give me the option to filter that out and I won’t complain again.

Vespair,

A filter is an entirely reasonable request

noopp,

There’s a block functionality that any user can use and iirc if you block a streamer they will be filtered out from your recommends/etc

This reminds me of when I used TOR to check my Facebook account after so many years. It was constantly throwing random almost-explicit-but-definitely NSFW pages at me.

"Where did these come from? Did I accidentally subscribe at some point? Oh they all say “suggested for you.”

Can you turn off “suggested for you”? Lol no. That’s how they force ads on you.
