Hopefully their personal information won’t be found out by those lawyers, or they could also be threatened into stopping development. It’s sad to see how companies are bullying volunteers into stopping legal projects.
Edit: SLAPP suits are similar to this, where companies file lawsuits while knowing they’d lose, if the defendent had the time, money and stress tolerance to win the lawsuit. …wikipedia.org/…/Strategic_lawsuit_against_public…
Companies that do that should loose all copyright and patents they ever had in return. I think that would solve the problem pretty quickly. (or the responsible person should get his hands cut off like in the good old days lol)
The frog in boiling water is actually a complete myth. The frog jumps out when the water is too warm for it, it’s not completely stupid. If the price is ‘too hot’ for you, jump out. Deezer (or any other streaming service) isn’t forcing you to stay subscribed.
The funny thing is I wouldn’t mind watching their ads if they weren’t annoying with them. If the ads were only at the start of a video, not during, and no still image banner at the bottom I have to click X on on desktop. I don’t want to actively dismiss anything while I’m watching the video, I want to relax and watch it.
They don’t allow me to sit and enjoy the videos without babysitting them to skip after the timer, so that’s why I block their ads with absolutely no compromise anymore.
I shouldn’t have to watch any ads on an already-profitable product. Accepting less is just me lowering my standards so people richer than me can be even richer.
It’s more than that. Would you devote 1-5% of your PC resources to others while you watch a video, if you could watch a video without ads? Yes. I bet so.
We are able to easily shoulder the burdens of hosting, yet Google wants to dominate us and force us to use their hosting at the psychological cost of being their sponge for anyone’s paid information campaign. YouTube in 2016 was non-stop Trump ads. Non fucking stop.
No no we are not. How are we going to distribute all the videos. I don’t think you realize how much storage youtube takes up. Could we have something yes would it be as big and vast as youtube not even close. I mean we can’t even distribute a handful of reddits traffic without failing.
Storage is probably the easier aspect to address. Storage is cheap and decentralized storage systems have existed for decades.
The problem is bandwidth and latency. Most residential ISPs do not offer high bandwidth and low latency upstream connections, which means there’s no good way to serve the content you’re storing.
Residential fiber is becoming more common in some areas, but often those residential plans still limit upstream or specifically have terms in their acceptable use policy that forbid such activities. Here’s an example from my fiber provider, which couldn’t be clearer:
You may not use the Services to host any type of server.
It’s a little silly of course, because if you were playing a game and hosting, you’re probably hosting a server! But if I were serving videos to thousands of peers, I’m sure they would notice and take issue.
While many will be understandably angry or disappointed in our lack of backbone or perceived selfishness
I’m angry and disappointed, but it is not because awesome people stop dedicating their free time to provide a free product, it’s because some money hungry corporation decided to bully less powerful individuals who didn’t even do anything wrong.
And it’s not the first time that this company did fucked up stuff…
Newer codecs are more efficient. H.265 and AV1 are often 2/3 to 1/2 the size of an H.264 file for the same quality.
Of course there are also people uploading lower quality files as well.
It completely depends on the specific video file. HEVC and AV1 are more efficient in general, but most of their benefits become apparent with 4K video, which they were specifically designed to be better at handling than AVC. It also depends on your phone’s software and hardware, as it might not be fast enough to encode in real-time with higher compression settings (and you don’t get to use things like 2-pass encoding which can drastically lower bitrate without sacrificing visual quality).
I assume you mean H.265 recorded on your phone? That is live encoded in a single pass. It doesn’t compress as much in that scenario. When you give a system more time that the real time playback of the video it can encoded things more efficiently.
I really didn’t get it! When I got my GH5 I was pumped to do 10bit 422 h.265. Really wanted to see the latitude we could get at that compression. Premiere and FCPX in particular for like 5 years went “lol no.”
Yeah, beats me, I was surprised as well, like why do we still have to work with AVC clips, why can’t I just import a HEVC clip… Premiere: nope, that ain’t happenin’.
While I have you here, I recently had a project where they shipped me three separate FedEx packages of loose SD cards that were unlabeled, all .mts files. What on gods earth happened on that shoot?
Oh and the footage was all interlaced I shit you not.
Yeah, I can related to that 😔. I work in a TV station in a country that had the PAL standard, and… well, every fucking shot is interlaced 🤦. Not only that, but the output from the station is as well 🤦. Why? Backwards compatibility… what in the actual fuck 🤦… it’s a stream, the decoder doesn’t care about that, it can decode any frame rate, any frame type, it’s all digital now 🤦. Tried explaining this, nope, we’re still doing interlaced.
And, of course, after the cable companies have their way with the signal, the output is shit… not to mention they also archive the material as interlaced 🤦… and then people from outside the station complain about the matrial being garbidge… they still don’t budge.
Just goes to show you what management is all about these days. They have the power, so they’re gonna use it any way they see fit. Why? Cuz they’re THE BOSS GOD DAMN IT 😠.
Lol 😂. Actually, it doesn’t take 3 seconds (well, 3 seconds for the stream output, yeah), there are workstations that need to be adjusted as well, but in a course if a day or 2, yeah, you can change the whole thing 👍. You could do the cameras last, that’s not such a big problem, they can shoot interlaced for a few days, edit it that way, export it non-interlaced.
Nothing, the licenses are for content providers and equipment manufacturers, obviously in the end you pay the license when purchasing the goods but the amount is small.
They have licensed countless other codecs and tons of cameras adopted it before they supported it. These aren’t some FOSS hobbyist projects. These are professional NLE’s for Hollywood level work. There’s no excuse if you ask me. Hell Resolve had it like 2-3 years prior I believe.
Not saying I don’t some times agree with the guy, but he peddles outrage. Every video is some gripe about something. I get tired of being angry some days. Just chill out man!
Definitely agree, but according to a recent video, his girlfriend is a privacy nut (said with respect) so idk if he’s gonna get any better. Next thing we know there’ll be two of them in the videos.
I usually agree with his takes, but I can’t watch more than a minute and a half of a video of his, because it’s always an unscripted rant. It’s fine though, he usually gets his point across in the first minute anyway, and then repeats himself for another ten minutes.
But that’s exactly what I LOVE about him! Well researched and thoroughly argumented rants, full of juicy insights and no restraints. I love him, he’s my spirit animal. And I love Blackberry and Clinton.
Yeah we need to start becoming aware of how our brains are being manipulated. If you’re angry, your fight or flight response is engaged and you give your attention to something (ie. click)
It’s probably possible and safe for roms, but then there are already more or less complete packs for basically every console and retro computer ever made so it’s not that useful.
Even then I wouldn’t do it. Installing games takes a while too, so it’s not much of a time-saver compared to automatically organizing movies/shows.
And the risk of getting a misleadingly named game with malware is too high. Remembering to sandbox isn’t easy either, after possessing them for a while. Untrusted files should never be on a computer, imo. But I don’t pirate games, so take my advice for what it is.
More than likely they’ll name the game exactly as it is for easy finding but include a crypto miner. It’s already happening anyways, it’ll make it easier.
Then floodgates of piracy opened as a means of being with exorbitant prices on music, and then television.
The solution for the industry was to make it more convenient to pay them than it was to steal. Stealing never stopped, it just lessened, because it was more convenient to pay.
Critical mistake, making it difficult for us to get what we want…
I’m traveling overseas now, and my totally valid Paramount subscription doesn’t work in Portugal and I can’t watch lower decks anywhere even if I’m willing to double pay for it.
The irony if that I downloaded episodes to watch offline on plane, they’re literally inside my phone.
Wait till you hear about YouTube premium making it imposible to watch downloaded videos already on your phone unless it can phone home every 3 days. The videos on your phone, you can’t wstc it until you get in touch with daddy google, defeating the point of downloading a video for offline viewing.
The fact that there are 11 quadrillion streaming services now makes me suspect that there actually cannot be a secret cabal of shady business types running the world. Because they are all far too interested in competing with each other to actually notice that if they stop doing that then they’d be better off.
This right here. Apple did a very artful job of making everything available way back when on a unified storefront with “everything”. Netflix did much the same, and for a time it was “everything enough” until each studio decided it was a good idea to make their own storefront. The mistake is that they inadvertently rekindled piracy not so much because of the pricing, but due to the convenience factor. Now the piracy is most convenient because it has it all in one spot. People will pay for content, that’s not the issue. It’s the same old adage as going to the same grocery store that just has all the shit you need so you don’t have to drive all over town.
