There’s a case to be made for dueling what is essentially a post-scarcity socialist Federation against the embodiment of capitalism-as-cult.
Conversely, the Borg are in a way aspirational-- growing and assimilating knowledge and improvements seems a bit higher of a goal, but their presentation comes off ham-fisted.
I feel like there’s a missing explanation of why “assimilating the diversity” of a civilization needs to be a total stripmine rather than taking a few (potentially willing) representatives and regularly coming back in case anything new evolved, like binge-watching a civilization every few years. The stripmining aspect seems necessary to make them recognizabily villianous-- the enemy of sacred individuality rather than just data hoarders whose homelabs turned into giant cubes.
It does feel like Latinum is very much a MacGuffin for undermining a huge amount of “we have virtually infinite free energy and can replicate anything we need” worldbuilding; they needed a way to make 24th century capitalism seem remotely plausible.
I’ve always assumed that the Borg were once a truly egalitarian faction. One that seeks out other points of view in order to invite them into a collective where every voice has a share in the overall direction of the whole.
I could see such a collective evolving into the current Star Trek Borg if things like fascism take root. A rabid xenophobia of thought that seeks to destroy any ‘wrong-think’ within the hive mind.
It would explain a lot of the problems that the Borg seem to have. Why they never seem to learn from their mistakes despite their adaptability, why they all share one mind despite their quest for distinctiveness, why they have a single load-bearing queen despite their usual priority of hyper redundancy in all things.
TLDR: some don’t like the moderation here, which is done by a single mod, and have gone and made their own community over on lemmy.world.
If this drama was real and the instance admins knew about it, I think I’d be happy to conclude that the instance admins did a bad job here given their status as a star trek instance. If there was a split amongst Risa people and its mod, then create another community (with TenForward being a great name for it) with a different moderator and let them co-exist as part of the same federation.
Now there’s probably some unnecessary fracturing (which is fine, that’s what the fediverse is all about in the end) … and I can’t help but wonder if the admins here are maybe a tad too much used to a reddit culture of allowing mods and admins get away with things … which is of course me being rather quick to judge, I can only speculate here clearly, but still … kinda funny to see.
well, I won’t share any details out of respect for their deletion.
Suffice it to say that they had problems with the moderation of Risa and evidently wanted to create a community with the kind of moderation they want. As TenForward has multiple moderators, Stamets was clearly not alone in this.
I think if you were to read the comments in the linked welcome message for TenForward, as well as the welcome message itself, you’ll get the picture.
I sort of forgot I made that comment. Thanks for the reminder. Have deleted.
I’m not looking to cause drama here in any way whatsoever. I’m not looking to upset people or cause confusion or anything. I stand by what I said in the welcome post on /c/TenForward. We just have a different moderation philosophy than Risa and wanted to go about making the community in a different fashion.
Sorry for linking to a comment of yours. It’s always tricky territory whether it’s polite or impolite to do so, especially if it’s clearly a heated situation/topic. I tagged you because that’s the only etiquette I’ve picked up about this sort of thing.
Oh I got a notification anyway from some random bot saying that my comment had been linked to so even if you didn’t tag me I would have known. That being said, I didn’t feel that was impolite at all. Totally makes sense that you would and I’d have done the same. I only deleted the comment because It was less polite than I’d have liked it to be and something that made more sense as a private message to someone than an open comment. That plus the fact that I wasn’t trying to start shit with the comment.
Let’s not forget that time when primitive 20th century freezer jockeys were thawed out on the Enterprise D and a sleazy 80s business man was able to do pretty much whatever he wanted with the computer. When Picard yells at him, he replies that if there were things he shouldn’t be allowed to do, why didn’t they set the computer to not allow it? And Picard replies that people shouldn’t have to be told they aren’t allowed to do certain things, they should be able behave without the computer forcing it.
So, the reason they have such a huge security issue is that they run everything on the honor system. Though I suppose this was right after Worf took over security, so I guess that makes sense.
That could be a good skit. Someone not affected by the telepathy is confused when everyone else is talking to the imaginary computer and nothing happens.
Like OK I can understand stealing a loose hair, kinda creepy but w/e, but her shoe? Is this some kind of gaslight where she thinks nobody would steal only one shoe, so it must be around somewhere, then a week later you can be like “Hey, I found this shoe, it looks alot like your old shoes? btw, why do you keep rubarb in your shoes?” and “What/who are you getting 9 units of fresh blood from?”
I don’t mind the Kelvin movies too much. Actively enjoy them for the most part. But JJ was definitely the worst part of those movies by far and I completely agree with the meme. You can feel the love of everyone bleeding through despite him, not because of him. So many people worked on those movies who were huge fans of Trek and then he has the nerve to openly talk about how he isn’t a fan of Star Trek.
Beyond is my favorite of the Kelvin movies and, what do you know, JJ didn’t direct it. Funny that.
I didn’t hate the Kelvin movies, aesthetically though they were trash in that they took a scifi franchise known for inspiring good UI design and expanded upon it with absolutely horrendous UI. Seriously the computers and interiors of those ships are so ugly it hurts.
Also, starfleet felt WAYYYYYYY too much like a military for me in those movies, there was no attempt to differentiate starfleet from a direct analog to the U.S. military and that just gives me that “kind of want to throw up” feeling every time I see it in star trek.
The part about the visuals of the ships is mostly opinion. I don’t think they’re that ugly.
I mean… there are a lot of differences that separate Starfleet from the US Military. That seems like a bit much. However the militaristic thing in general is completely explained in universe. It’s not just a “Oh, Starfleet is more of a military now!” thing. The Kelvin was rocking along, doing it’s typical stuff, and then suddenly a massive warship with unheard of weaponry shows up and proceeds to obliterate it, killing a massive amount of people and forcing over 800 other people to run for their lives. All in no time at all and within Federation borders. Prime Timeline Starfleet beefed up the military aspect after the Borg and only increased due to the Dominion. Makes a lot of sense to me that they’d step up the militaristic aspect in a universe where a random incursion within their own borders left them completely defenseless. Then 20ish years later, the fleet that was sitting at Earth and is responsible for Earths defense is completely wiped out in less than 10 minutes by that same ship. At that point it would be absolutely idiotic to not have Starfleet be more militaristic.
The man knows how to absolutely decimate a Starfleet vessel. I’m all for bringing him back if he’s just limited to 10 minutes of an unpowered ship tumbling in free fall towards a planet.
Strange New Worlds is much better modern Star Trek, but you can’t say JJ didn’t take advantage of the theatrical scale of things.
Oh absolutely. Visually those movies are stunning. Like yeah, you can argue about plot and what not all you want but the shots of Into Darkness of the Vengeance sliding across San Francisco? Absolutely fucking amazing. And that shot of the Enterprise on a death spiral through the sky before the camera stops and you see the Enterprise slowly rise through the clouds? I have goosebumps thinking about it. I’m gonna need to rewatch that scene again.
Beyond has one of my favorite ship destruction sequences in all of Star Trek. Just the glory of the Enterprise cruising through space before having its throat unceremoniously slit was… Honestly it was a gut punch. Then seeing the saucer section bashing through mountains before crashing to a stop? FUCK! Not to mention the follow-up scene of reactivating the thrusters and causing the saucer to flip over.
Honestly the visuals are a huge reason as to why I enjoy the movie so much.
I like this take. Use him like you’d use a stunt coordinator, or a pyrotechnics specialist. Have a complex action scene that needs to convey action, chaos, high-stakes, and fireballs, for 12 straight minutes? He’s your guy.
In-universe explanation: they’re advanced enough to be able to kill, dissolve, and sonically motivate bacteria and dirt - even in pores. This would leave you incredibly clean. Remember: they’ve got transporters. They reconstruct you from an energy beam in a split second, not noticeably disrupting your perception of consciousness. Sonic-shower precision like that would be considered child’s play.
Not to mention that they can vaccinate against practically every pathogen, so they could eliminate the types of bacteria that cause the majority of body odor.
Woah, I never really thought about it, but the not disrupting your perception of consciousness thing is huge. Not only do they have to replicate all of the electrons and neurochemicals in the right locations, but they also have to ensure that their motion continues in exactly the same way.
If they’re able to do all of that, why the fuck does anyone ever leave a transporter dirty? They clearly already do some level of this with the bio-filters. Same with teeth, why don’t the transporters keep your teeth sparkly and your breath fresh?
Bonus points:
Are water-based showers a luxury? Surely you could just slap a replicator in there and not have to worry about plumbing.
Speaking of plumbing, I can’t recall seeing a toilet in Star Trek. Even if there are, they’d just have a matter decompiler in there, right?
So, why not just use the transporters to clear your bowels then? Can’t shit your pants on an away mission if you got cleared out on the beam down.
Like, why can’t you just roll out of bed, hop on the transporter pad, and show up to your classes at Starfleet Academy having had a Shower, a Shit and a Shave on the way!
My headcanon is that most of their speech is ferengi being translated by the universal translator, but when they say the word human they just use the human word for human which then goes untranslated.
It’s not even head cannon, this screenshot is legit not just from the episode, but from the scene where there’s an example of exactly what you described.
