DrRatso,

I did not fully get from the article what exactly it is that makes marriage too expensive? Surely getting a marriage certificate is not prohibitively expensive? And shared / dual income would make it easier to stay on top of finances…

DrRatso,

On top of knowing the needs, such groups, generally, have the means to utilise the money more effectively dollar for dollar than an individual because they can buy wholesale and have deals with different companies.

DrRatso,

Who put the gun to your head and made you run the software though?

DrRatso, (edited )

I think this depends. People who need basic computer functions can get on very well with linux.

My classmate in highschool had ubuntu on his home pc as long as I remember, because someone preconfigured it for them and it was mainly a browser - schoolwork machine. He gamed on XBox. There was no hassle, it was fine.

My mom on her run down laptop has mint now, because I configured it for her. I haven’t heard any complaints.

E: Also many hospital here run Linux and it is just fine, and trust me, many of the medical staff are barely tech literate enough to register for email themselves.

Linux is a problem for people who come from windows and need more than basics but are not tech savvy enough to get their hands dirty. Then once your comfort level with tinkering goes up again, Linux is once again not a bad recommendation. It really kind of is the bell curve meme.

DrRatso,

You can not have a cure for cancer, but a cancer. I promise I am not trying to be pedantic here. Cancers are so different from one another, that a single cure for breast cancer might not even work on all breast cancer.

Why I need extra kernel modules to be able to run Wayland on nvidia?

If i run X.org i dont need to modify my kernel or its configs, it just works well (well, well for X.org) out of box. With wayland its the other story. I need to enable nvidia-dkms module and much other stuff to should be configured. There is a whole page about enabling hyprland on nvidia....

DrRatso,

This is hyprland specific, wayland runs fine on Gnome and KDE with regular, open and Noveau nvidia drivers

DrRatso,

Bouldering and running are the things I find I want to sink most of my free time into lately. Secondary to that it is general strength and yoga excercises.

I’m a sucker for a good book, recently read the Dune series, it was fantastic.

Then of course music (rap, hip-hop, rock), podcasts (too many to list or keep up with properly, really).

Video games used to be big, but these days nothing really tickles my pickle. I used to be mostly into PvP (first few seasons of league, speedrunners, MW2, Battlerite, Omega Strikers) but these days it is rare to find good ones, single-player stuff rarely catches my attention enough to sink hours in. Usually nothing I try these days lasts more than 2-3 times playing it.

DrRatso,

An overwhelming portion of what is hard science now was probably in the domain of philosophy once.

DrRatso, (edited )

So just don’t upgrade the kernel

DrRatso,

Absolutely yes to the first part, just use archinstall. The second is in large part up to you, but pacman + AUR are amazing.

DrRatso,

I think that is an overly bleak view. An interstellar civilization is likely on a similar evolutionary ladder spot as us and I would imagine that they would recognize this. I don’t think that there is much difference between us and them in that scenario, except how far we have developed our idea space. Supposedly with the help of such a civilization we would be able to accomplish the same feats as them in a fairly short time. No monkey is going to engineer rockets, no matter how long you try to teach them.

DrRatso,

Given how curious we are, I think being scared of aliens is odd. I would assume that a civilization capable of interstellar travel is fairly chill.

And a sufficiently advanced alien civilization could sterilise earth from the comfort of their home star system, so if advanced aliens wanted us dead, it would not be hard, we wouldn’t even see it coming.

DrRatso,

There are a variety of ways in which our bodies attune to constant stimulus, in the case of neural stimulus, there are a variety of mechcanisms with the common goal of reducing activation of the neural pathway. You could have less receptors, more breakdown of the stimulating compound, increased cell activation treshold or downstream changes that similarly just reduce the ability for the signal to cause effects further along the chain.

Receptor or physical clogging generally (afaik) does not happen with substances we encounter normally, however it is a common tactic in pharmacology, where we might use a drug that binds to a receptor without effect and prevents the active compound from binding.

Or in the case of Succinylcholine, it binds, causes the normal action, but then prevents the normal molecule from binding and causing the action again - this is used to achieve rapid muscle paralysis and is both a poison as well as a common drug used for anesthesia.

DrRatso,

Next up was the American Veterinary Medical Association, a group that represents nearly 90,000 bona fide vets and has been around since the days of the Civil War. When asked about whisker fatigue, the association’s president, Tom Meyer, noted that “while a cat’s whiskers are very sensitive, there is currently no evidence showing that whiskers rubbing against food bowls causes cats stress or discomfort.”

What's an alternative to Spotify that doesn't play you the same fucking songs over and over?

I am in an intense love-hate relationship with Spotify. It makes good mixes for me, I have found a lot of great bands that way. BUT IT KEEPS REGURGITATING THE SAME SONGS IN THERE. I know about Song Radios and Artist Radios, so please don’t recommend those. Smart Shuttle doesn’t cut it, either....

DrRatso,

This might be a function of low usage time, the shifts were definitely more pronounced in the beginning, now when I listen to new stuff it only introduces the changes in the appropriate mixes (i.e my mix 1-3 is various hiphop (very well segregated into different styles i must add), 4,5 is indie/rock etc) and the amount is a function of how much of said new stuff i listen. On occasion i will use votes and the dislikes especially affect playlists quickly.

I know the youtube behaviour you refer to and it honestly really makes me hate watching youtube, some days I will have a bad mood and start spamming not interested for a few rows and my feed is good again.

But with YTM it seems to be really nice, whereas with spotify, as OP, I found it quite stale.

DrRatso,

One of the main reasons I stuck with YouTube Music is that I find the algorhitms superior to spotify. Maybe this is placebo, but I think between the 7 mixes + discovery + artist / song radio I always have something that does not feel the same, and I feel like any intentionally searched listening updates the mixes fairly quickly.

DrRatso,

Don’t like them, they are annoying to deal with - CLI naming is odd, files are stored unintuitively and if your whole system is not on flatpak, chances are the sizes are going to be absurd. One of the main reasons I wen’t with Arch is Pacman + AUR, never have to install a flatpak, because the package management is so good.

DrRatso,

The point is to make adblocking so tedious that only fairly tech literate people would do it. That cousin whose pc you set up and installed uBO on? They won’t figure out how to update the filters, they will just whitelist (or realistically just turn off uBO) or premium.

Basically nobody will actually abandon YT over this and those who do will be so low in numbers it is ~0 to YT.

DrRatso,

Top six hours for all, new for subscribed and communities.

DrRatso,

If you want to escape this loop, you need a strong rule against any screens in , at minimum, your bed, but ideally the entire bedroom.

This way the only association your brain has to your bed is sleeping, making it much easier to just sleep when you get into bed.

Music / podcasts / audiobooks are also highly unadvisable.

DrRatso,

Sleep schedule is probably what you want fixed, there are a multitude of things to aid, in addition to the aforementioned it is also vital to have sleep hygiene if you have problems with sleep.

Sleep hygiene is a lot of things, but the main things:

  • The bedroom and, most crucially, your bed is for sleeping, if you have a habit of scrolling or watching videos etc in your bed, it will be a lot harder for your brain to be like “well, im in bed now, guess ill sleep”.
  • Destimulation period before bed, 30-60 minutes before bed get rid of stimulating activity. Some light reading could be okay, better would be meditation, some conversation, a slow walk.
  • Sleep environment - blackout curtains, low noise or white noise (substitute sounds could be wind, rain, ocean, but not music or generally other sounds)
  • Actually rigid schedule, especially for bedtime, but also wake-up time.
  • Got into bed at the time but not sleepy? No screens, no reading. Darkness and your mind - meditate, count sheep, fantasise, think up a novel. Personally i love meditating on the actual process of my mind falling asleep.
  • Consider short term melatonin to adjust to a sleep schedule or to change a sleep schedule.
DrRatso,

Even the dictionary says woo-woo refers to the sounds ghosts are supposed to make. Don’t trust randos on lemmy.

DrRatso, (edited )

So did you even read or just copy articles where the title agrees with you? The first one is “according to google”. The only article i saw crop up on google use the term derogatory(as per the article) to describe woo-woo was on medium, talking about how it makes people who believe in the supersticious and paranormal feel bad (much like the second article you linked). If you actually read them, you would see there is only one negative implication in the first article, and it is not in the origins of the word but in the “message” of “western superiority”, because god forbid we actually ask people to back up their claims.

Where is the racist connection then? Maybe just look up the origins of the word on the dictionary and admit you are spouting bullshit?

DrRatso,

All these packages, and none to take a proper screenshot.

DrRatso,

A bike is faster in my city if you are decently fast, but a bus or trolley is faster than cars during rush hours, because we have public transit lanes, so while everyone in their tin cans is stressed yelling at the dumbass who just cut them off im breezing past, listening to a podcast, meditating or catching a quick ten minute nap before work.
