KpntAutismus,

cut myself on a glass desk near my wrist once. bled like hell but it healed by itself. i do live in europe, but my dad thought it wasn’t neccesary.

so yeah, i’d be pretty much not alive. other than the occasional cut on my hands, that’s probably my worst injury.

How often do you back up?

I was wondering how often does one choose to make and keep back ups. I know that “It depends on your business needs”, but that is rather vague and unsatisfying, so I was hoping to hear some heuristics from the community. Like say I had a workstation/desktop that is acting as a server at a shop (taking inventory / sales...

KpntAutismus,

didn’t have money for an external hard drive or anything like that growing up, so a lot of stuff got lost over the years. but when i upgrade my NAS’ hard drive i will buy an enclosure and scrape all of the important stuff together. like recovery codes for my 3ds collection, old photos of my late cat. that kinda stuff. then i’ll see how frequently i’m gonna update the data.

my brother runs a thinkpad T380. best thing about it is that there is a swappable and a built-in battery. he bought it “refurbished” so his didn’t include the internal one for some reason. but you can open and even upgrade some components.

all for around 300€.

we think these have benn bought by companies for full price (1000+€) and are now being replaced, so the market for used thinkpads is very saturated at the moment.

currently runs windows, but i see no problems with running linux on a laptop, you aren’t gonna game on integrated graphics anyway.

i’ve used Linux Mint Cinnamon a fair bit, i really like it. i’ve heard KDE offers more desktop customization, but i have no idea what that would actually look like. Kubuntu apparently has it.

How to cope with existing right now?

It feels like no matter where I turn some septuagenarian, or older, is making life miserable for myself and others. Usually these are older white Christian conservatives, obsessed with a delusional sense of reality that no longer has a basis in fact, or perhaps never did....

KpntAutismus,

having to go to work is definetely one of the sources for my depression. and without giving too much personal info, i look forward to not having to do it in the future.

i do sometimes listen to podcasts, but haven’t tried audiobooks. i think my ebook reader can do them, i might try that sometime.

KpntAutismus,

the EU is pretty self-sufficient, how would they even do that? threaten to leave NATO?

KpntAutismus,

sadly, they’re s l o w . i want to upgrade to M.2s, but HDDs make SSDs look insanely expensive.

KpntAutismus,

Hero too - chrissy costanza as kyoka jiro

if you watched the MHA school festival arch, this song will hit extra hard.

Honestly - How much will you sacrifice for a better world?

Confronted with the likelihood that we cannot achieve climate goals, confront socioeconomic inequality, and ultimately build a better world without significant personal sacrifice: How much are you personally capable and willing to lose? I mean this in the most earnest way possible. Acknowledging the likely possibility of working...

KpntAutismus,

i want to see jeff bezos living with a median wage. then we can talk.

KpntAutismus,

i think people are “middle aged” in that range. i would call someone who has been around for 50-60 years old.

KpntAutismus,

meh. their content is at the same level it was before, they just look over the specs twice before uploading now.

How is the piracy experience on an iPad ?

So I am planning on buying an ipad, never owned one before. I have always been an android guy and from what I have heard Ipad os or ios is pretty restrictive in nature so I was wondering how much does it hamper the piracy experience. For example on android I can torrent files of any nature or size without any restrictions and...

KpntAutismus,

my brother has a budget samsung tablet. i’m not a fan of samsung myself, but he says it’s great. way easier file management too. hmu if you want to pirate anything specific, i may know a few websites.

KpntAutismus, (edited )

i was about to say linux mint as well. dump some coffe in, some water, press it down and off you go!

non-proprietary and very reliable.

KpntAutismus,

honestly, i barely know how to write shit for an arduino. i have no prior experience with software. linux stuff is learning by doing. try something and see if that works. the text tutorials in the documentations are often the best way to install stuff. you’ll eventually figure it out.

What VPN do you use and why?

If you are a pirate VPN is an essential tool. I am trying to ascertain the popularity of various VPNs in piracy community. In this excerise, I will list several Popular VPNs in the comment if you use one of them just upvote that comment and reply the reason. If you don’t find your VPN listed add a comment with just their name....

KpntAutismus,

they are very committed to not save any of your data, to the point that their servers run entirely in RAM and get cleared daily. but i am considering switching to mullvad when my subscription runs out.

KpntAutismus,

so swerving into oncoming traffic is safe? i had numerous near crashes because people overtook a bike driver coming my way. the netherlands do it better, the bikes have their own separated lane.

KpntAutismus,

i rotate one of my feet inwards (something around 100°), so that the corresponding knee points at the other one, somehow that’s more comfortable.

KpntAutismus,

i fire up syncthing every once in a while, mainly because of pictures of my cat. i store it all on my main PC, and am planning to implement my NAS as well soon.

KpntAutismus,

think of keyboards. business grade is a 10$ POS memrane keyboard. enthusiast/hobby grade would be a 200$ keychron q6. same with pretty much everything else. business grade is cheap and easily replaceable.

edit: i copied @fubo on accident

KpntAutismus,

fair points, a 1 litre car like this which is considered very safe basically costs nothing to ensure. i mainly forgot because it’s technically part of a company fleet of a family member, and they just pay the minescule bill.

it is a toyota. there are no broken parts.

i am not planning to sell it, it was already worth less than 1500€

oil doesn’t really cost much either, especially because i change it myself.

tires last really long and if you buy slightly used ones from someone who sold their car you can save a lot of money.

KpntAutismus,

if public transport is a valid alternative (cheaper, less crowded, more comfortable) i will use it. but currenly it is not. so i will drive my 1st gen yaris 1.0. besides 70€ of gas a month, there ate no other operation costs.

KpntAutismus,

which is all true. and that is the cost i’m willing to pay to drive my car. if you think you can not afford to drive a car, don’t.

KpntAutismus,

the one in my apartment building rattles like no one’s business but it’s regularly TÜV checked, so i trust it.

KpntAutismus,

yup, wear your glasses people!

but what happens if you say you have contacts in? do they have a mobile eye exam in their beamers?
