MangoKangaroo,

It’s baffling to me why it’s a weird negotiation to pay taxes instead of them just telling me what I owe since they do know what I owe.

You can thank the Intuit lobbyists for that one.

MangoKangaroo,

I’m waiting for the conclusions to things that are completely out of my control, but that will also have a heavy bearing on my future happiness. I won’t know how these things will turn out for months, but that certainly isn’t stopping them from impacting my ability to enjoy life today.

MangoKangaroo,

So, basically, 🐣.

MangoKangaroo,

Keep at it! It took me being ghosted a trillion times and having my heart broken after a second interview to finally find my current position. I believe in you. :)

MangoKangaroo,

Ah, the age-old tale of insurance trying to skimp on covering medications. My doctor once tried to give me Modafinil (a very gentle stimulant) for mild narcolepsy. Insurance said no, and that they wanted her to try two lesser acting medications first (there aren’t any). So, she prescribed Adderall, and they insta-accepted it. Flawless logic!

As for a pep-talk: I have no wisdom, but I believe in you.

MangoKangaroo,

What language? Native, or something new to you? 👀

MangoKangaroo,

I had actually considered doing Chinese as my required world language for college. My trade school mentor, who was very well traveled, talked me out of it after telling me how insanely difficult Chinese can be to learn. I’m glad that you’re feeling productive with Japanese.

MangoKangaroo,

Honestly, if Mint has been working fine then I see no reason that you’d need to switch. If you’re curious about trying out other distros, it could be worth using a program like Boxes to try out some VM’s. Otherwise, I say you keep doing whatever works well for you.

MangoKangaroo,

I’ve been using and loving the Intel AV1 support that got added with the latest update. Glad to see we’re getting a VA-API implementation now.

MangoKangaroo,

This sounds neat, and I do love me some onions. I’ll add it to the list.

MangoKangaroo,

What entree do people pair these with? Or do you just, like, eat them with rice or something?

How much does a creator's worldview influence whether you use their tech or consume their media?

Watching the drama around kagi unfold and it has me wondering how much you take into consideration a creator’s view on things like homophobia, sexism, racism, etc. when deciding to use a product. I think most of us have a bar somewhere (I would imagine very few on this website would ever consider registering on an altright...

MangoKangaroo,

A lot. Also, thanks for the heads-up on Kagi. Anybody have recommendations for a privacy-respecting search engine that isn’t run by chuds? Paid is fine as long as it doesn’t suck.

Anxiety has been through the roof this past week. My weekend hasn’t been too great either on account of a hole in my insulation causing my water to freeze on Friday. Hoping that it comes back tomorrow once temperatures start staying above freezing.

Edit: WATER IS BACK YAY

MangoKangaroo,

Silly Ducky, get those Timeshift snapshots running. :)

MangoKangaroo,

What toppings and condiments? 👀

MangoKangaroo,

Dang you get far fancier than me. I usually just throw on some pickled red onions, mayo, and mustard on a boring piece of sandwich bread. 😅

Hey 👋 dear Linux Community,

I'm still kinda new to Linux (started using this year 😅) I already made it to my main OS, even if I still missing some things which I used on Windows, anyway. What I wanted to ask you guys, what recommendations do you have for Linux Mint (Cinnamon)? In terms of security, optimization, (a way to make the UI looking modern ;-;) and privacy? I would be very interested in what you do guys to optimize your Linux setup :) I'm pretty technical, so there is nothing which could overwhelm me (probaly).

Thx! 🤍

@linux

MangoKangaroo,

As other have mentioned, setting up Timeshift + a firewall is a good start. I’m 99% sure that LM guides you through both of these processes on first boot, but it’s a good thing to check on anyways. LM is pretty sanely put together out of the box, so I’d honestly just recommend you use it as-is and tweak things when/if you run into something that isn’t doing it for you.

Other than that, welcome to the party!

MangoKangaroo,

I’ve been debating picking up Tinder or something because I’m having a lot of trouble meeting people in the town I just moved to, but all the horror stories have me conflicted on whether I should even bother. 🙃

MangoKangaroo,

We had quite the party here on the PNW coast. My power somehow didn’t go out, though, so that’s a win.

MangoKangaroo,

I have the big sad.

MangoKangaroo,

I came to Beehaw wanting a replacement for orangesite™. However, I’ve since decided that I care a lot less about having a massive network and more about just having a positive community of strangers to talk to about my life and interests. In that respect I’d totally be open to a smaller platform. Whether that’d be Beehaw or somewhere else, I don’t know. But Beehaw leaving the Fediverse wouldn’t be the dealbreaker for me that I once though it would.

All that said, I’d definitely prefer Beehaw to stay in the Fediverse. While there are a lot of dorks out there in the wild, there are some communities that I’d really miss.

MangoKangaroo,

Shoot, I’d probably be one of them if not for my need to have Wayland and slightly newer libraries for my A770.

MangoKangaroo,

Well, “just works” in the Todd Howard interpretation. ;)

MangoKangaroo,

Welcome to the party! Never let anyone get you down for using a “beginner” distro; it’s perfectly valid to want a system that just works. :)

MangoKangaroo,

I posted last week about being anxious for a big exam I had coming up. I was getting physically ill from the anticipation, and so I decided to just send it instead of waiting and studying until the last minute (it’s a WGU OA, so I can take it whenever.)

I’m super happy to say that I absolutely crushed it! That’s my last sit-down test, so now all that’s between me and my Bachelor’s is some essays and a work-based-learning experience! Needless to say I’m doing pretty good. :)
