Asking being I just had take out about 40 screws and disconnect several board connectors to replace a simple damaged motor gear. Took a few hours for something that could easily take minutes to repair with a little thoughtful manufacturer design.
We have a Roomba I’ve replaced the main wheels on. They seem to have a good availability of spare parts as well, although they are in big units. I haven’t found a way to replade the tracks of the main wheels, as the ‘tires’ are the issue here, not the rest of the unit. They wear fast with uneven flooring.
It feels like no matter where I turn some septuagenarian, or older, is making life miserable for myself and others. Usually these are older white Christian conservatives, obsessed with a delusional sense of reality that no longer has a basis in fact, or perhaps never did....
Anyone got any advice for coping with this late stage capitalist hellscape?
Learn skills.
Money is worthless when you have to spend 4 hours to work to hire somebody to do in 1h what you yourself can do in 2. At this point the prizes of skilled labour rise as there is a huge shortage of skilled personel. Somehow society decided ther theoretical knowledge is more valuable then practical knowledge, but to me managers and the likes are overhead.
As example, in '10, when I was 38, my house needed painting for the 1st time. I got a quote of €4k (more then a month’s wage) and it would be done in 2-3 days. I decided to paint the house myself and it took me a week, cost me €400, gave me the chance to repair the windows and I learned some skills.
Same goes for car repairs, plumbing and I (male) even made our curtains with a sewing machine I bought. The only tasks I’m forced to hire people for now is medical, for me, my wife and our pets. When I hire somebody for other tasks, it’s because I don’t want to do the work. It’s a choice.
As it always has been, knowledge is power, which includes the knowledge/skills to be self supporting. Refuse to run the rat race, although in the US that’s a lot harder then over here in Europe.
I use a tablet for gaming, Linux for almost everything and a windows vm for de-DRM’ing books I boiught so I can read them the way I want. Windows vm is just for when I have no other option.
I’m always on the lookout for materials that help me understand different things that up to now I’ve been otherwise stumped by or had trouble wrapping my mind around. Any subject/topic that’s interested you that whatever you’ve found has helped you gain a greater understanding and appreciation of are welcome!
Wondering how much of the Lemmy user base wouldn’t use an adblocker. If you do use one what other blocking do you use to circumvent data collection, YouTube and reddit front ends and things alike?
I can confirm, forgejo is a good, very lightweight git server you can run on an rpi with room to spare. I’m running with postgresql as backend on the same rpi, mariadb is an option as well.
When you don’t want to selfhost, gitlab is independant and EU (NL?) based, bitbucket is from atlasian (US?) and is also an option.
Yep, dual sim is a thing. However, my employer wants full control of the phone so they provided an iPhone. (I’m an Android user) The biggest pro of 2 phones is that you can silence the work phone outside work hours.
With my 1st temp job ('99) I told my boss that the best feature on the work phone the power button was. The moment I left the building it would be turned off. Alas, those modern phones have a complete sequence to go trough to get them off, so I now use the automated do not desturb. Alas, iPhone has only times you can set daily, instead weekday dependent times. Between 18:00 and 7:00 the thing is quiet, no exceptions.
Same here, the manager hiring me left before my employment started. I was a contractor that joined, so I already knew most of the team. Alas, management destroyed the fun in the job. Way to much work, no new knowledged colleagues but we got a truckload of managers to work agile.
My 1st phones were around €200, now you only find cheap junk that breaks within a year at that prize point. Having to cough up €500-700 for a phone that lasts a few years sounds excessive. Best phone until now is my '18 Nokia 6.1. Prize was €300 and it’s still going strong.
I miss the home phisical button and back/menu touch ‘button’ on tablet and phones. Having to swipe down from the top, then press the right symbol at the bottom before they disappear again is a mess.
I’m still using my '18 Nokia 6.1 and '16 Samsung Tab S2 8". As phone I see no alternative apart from fairphone, haven’t found an alternative yet for the 8" tablet. (There are no 8" left it seems)
Main tablet is a Lineage running Samsung Tab S5e, no alternative found for that. No 10" (or slightly larger) tablet that has an alternative rom. (Or one I can start developing for with another device as base)
Not sure if this is 100% scientifically backed but I read a bit by a dental hygienist on a forum that you shouldn’t rinse when brushing with proper toothpaste because it can help remineralize the teeth if when its not rinsed away after...
Can confirm 1. At least for me it worked great. They make a lot less noice then the oral-b with the rotating head and the head is a lot smaller. The smaller head enables me to reach all teeth.
When she was under weight, just tell her she looks a lot healtier then she did and most importantly that you like her no matter what.
With humans it’s just like with other animals, you shouldn’t be able to see the ribs, you need to be able to feel them, just. (You can go hunt for them and tickle her to prove it ;) )
So I was looking into getting port forwarding set up and I realized just how closed-off the internet has gotten since the early days. It’s concerning. It used to be you would buy your own router and connect it to the internet, and that router would control port-forwarding and what-have-you....
My kiddo and I are having a fruit and vegetable challenge. Each month we’ll seek out a fruit or vegetable we’ve never tried and taste it. My BFF is trying to walk all the greenways in our county (that is county not country, low stakes! Attainabl!). How about you?
As that’s failed, I have ticked the resolutions off the list and can do what I like, play more bass guitar and/or regular guitar, but that has to wait until I had my surgery. Nomclue when that’ll be, but the hospital indicated Q1.

Pretty much the title. I think you all know what I’m talking about.

Your body doesn’t heal itself. Cuts need stitches that must be permanent. Bones need to be screwed together even if just cracked. How you doing?
