grue,

It’s really too bad the original innovators got subsumed by capitalist ‘tech bros.’

grue,

Definitely the first one, with the dollar signs.

grue,

It’s also reasonable to donate to your instance admin (although in your case for lemmy.ml, that’s the same people).

grue,

Alternative interfaces like NewPipe, FreeTube, etc. work fine for what they are, but I prefer using a web browser because I actually like Youtube keeping track of my watch history and its recommendation algorithm works (reasonably) well for me.

All the alternative interfaces have privacy from Google as a primary design goal, so they want you to import your subscriptions and let them keep track of what you watched locally, but the consequence and downside of that is that it doesn’t synchronize across devices (e.g. FreeTube on my Linux desktop and NewPipe on my phone). At least not without a bunch of extra effort on my part manually importing and exporting, anyway.

grue,

I wasn’t trying to get into the weeds about actual kernel version numbers; I was just saying they made classic Mac OS from versions 1-9 and OS X from versions 1-14, and 9 + 14 = 23.

grue,

I stand corrected. I gotta be honest: I used to daily-drive OS X up until about a decade ago, but I haven’t paid much attention to it since then.

grue,

The OS version number is really 10.14.2.1, though.

grue,

Mac OS is actually at version 23 (they restarted the count at 10).

grue,

If Windows users had to deal with the dependency issues

Have you never heard the term “DLL Hell?” It’s called that because DOS and Windows specifically use .dll files for dependencies.

I'm so frustrated rn.

I have been distro hopping for about 2 weeks now, there’s always something that doesn’t work. I thought I would stick with Debian and now I haven’t been able to make my printer work in it, I think I tried in another distro and it just worked out of the box, but there’s always something that’s broken in every distro....

grue,

do you people think Ubuntu will work for me?

Yes.

On the bottom right of the page, next to “Share” and “Embed,” there’s a flag icon. Click it, and you can report the product. I figured “Defamatory” was a likely category…

grue,

Exactly; for instance, if two people of the same (biological) sex were buried together, it means they were definitely just very good friends.

grue,
grue,

Different countries regulate the radio spectrum differently, so transmitting on a certain frequency might be legal in country A but illegal in country B. They don’t bother making different radios for different countries, though; instead, they just build hardware capable of transmitting on all the frequencies and then restrict what it can do via the firmware. The argument goes, if they allow device owners to modify the firmware, then they might modify the radio to transmit illegally. Never mind that there are myriad other ways an attacker could do that, that are almost as cheap and easy…

Where can a Boomer catch up on current computer/software technology?

I have an eight-year-old laptop that needs replacing and I’m paralyzed. What are the most reliable ones now? Do I need a desktop for CAD? Pros and cons of operating systems (and where do I find them?) Browsers ditto? Where do I find answers that aren’t just product marketing?

grue,

Do I need a desktop for CAD?

Probably not, unless your models are really complicated or you do heavy duty finite-element analysis or something and thus need a high-end GPU. (If that were you, you’d know it and wouldn’t have needed to ask.)

Pros and cons of operating systems (and where do I find them?)

Linux is the best, but if your use-case is CAD you’re likely stuck on Windows because Autodesk etc. are run by assholes (in other words, because most CAD software only runs in Windows).

Browsers ditto?

Firefox, because it’s the only reasonably-mainstream browser that doesn’t use the same rendering engine as Chrome. You shouldn’t use any Chromium-based browser because allowing Google to have hegemony over web standards is bad for the Internet and society as a whole.

grue,

“Thermal shock” doesn’t necessarily mean it burned; it can also mean that it spontaneously shattered.

grue,

Isn’t that basically what a defibrillator does?

grue,

In 2014, Green Boots was moved to a less conspicuous location by members of a Chinese expedition.

Hey FBI, keep your eye on OP the priests

FTFY.

I think $700-800 for a server with SFP ports sounds like good value in terms of price relative to capability, but the absolute price and capability are probably overkill for a residential use-case (even a homelab one). It’s a no-brainer if you’re the Other Linus (the Tech Tips one) and have unlimited budget for all the latest electro-bling in your house, but if you’re any sort of normal person you don’t need 10 gig networking yet.

Does Minisforum make anything with 4 ethernet ports and a <100W TDP in the <$300 range? If so, get that instead.

grue,

Considering the thing in the 4th panel is very identifiable as a car, apparently not!

grue,

I don’t have video of the actual demolition that started this week, but here’s a video I happened to watch the other day that gives interesting background info about the project: www.youtube.com/watch?v=zcUrUE6-ZCw
