I’m curious where people see Universal Basic Income on the political spectrum. Please mention what national/cultural/generational background is informing your answer. Thanks!
UBI is neither left or right, it’s ridiculously logical. If people don’t have money, you don’t have an economy. No economy, no taxes, no taxes, no government, no government, no support for the people and no military, no military, no defense from aggressors, no defense from aggressors, welcome back to the age of Gengis Khan.
You don’t need to assign a political leaning to something that’s fundamentally economic in nature.
There are entire industries that are dying as we speak and they will NOT be returning and they will NOT have jobs to replace them like there has been throughout history of automation. (Manufacturers got automated bots, but those bots required people to set, align, and assist or repair. Now all of this will be able to be done by other bots with a single site overseer who, eventually, will also be a bot)
This isn’t a printing press situation where the writers are replaced by a printing press so they can better focus on journalism instead of writing individual papers by hand, this is a situation where we will have entire industries die and entire sets of professionals age out and entire professions lost to the void.
Another example of this would be bank tellers vs ATM’s back in the day, the tellers thought ATM’s would remove their jobs, it reduced their jobs at first, then changed their jobs outright to financial administration and management, rather than doling out cash to people, made their jobs more efficient and fundamentally different.
This is not that situation. The tellers will lose their jobs as well this time, and so will the bank managers and investors.

I very much understand your pain, my drive died mid-year while I was at university, I just cleaned it up and added it to a virtual machine with win10 to finish projects with the windows based programs.
Worked surprisingly well. I used virtual machine manager on arch (and now endeavour, I can’t stop distro hopping but I’ve stayed on endeavour the longest)
When the windows update bricked my OS I sighed in pure relief as I could finally stop using windows forever. As an added bonus I didn’t lose any work because the drive was fully accessible to arch… after windows said it had encrypted the drive.
Absolute trash operating system and I have zero regrets leaving.
It’s incompetent and immature morons that continue to push segregation, and realistically the more they fight it the more I have to ask “what did you do”
It’s not a company nor a random strangers responsibility to raise someones kids, and in reference to adults, they can click elsewhere, looking at content online is entirely dependent upon what you search and click.
Blaming the company or someone else for something entirely in the individual complaining’s control is absolutely ridiculous.
I watched multiple children die absolutely horrific deaths before the age of ten and I don’t walk around crying about it, I deal with it and don’t make it someone else’s problem.
You are fully in the right here.
This absolute incompetence surrounding personal responsibility and decision making these days is ridiculous “I don’t want to think for myself, think for me”.
I never said they could or couldn’t do anything. I specifically noted that people were giving up personal control in favour of pretend protection from things they themselves click on or search for then get mad about.
This was never a conversation about what reddit was doing and was always a conversation about the overall ineptitude and immaturity of society these days
Yesterday there was a controversial movie torrent that was getting 1000s of downloads and was on the “popular this week” page, and today it’s just gone. I went to the uploader’s account page and it’s not there either. Just like it never existed....
I said fairly based. The commenters preoccupation with the fascism connection was odd but the rest was pretty much on point for presenting a theory as to why the torrent had been removed and re-added. The commenter added additional commentary to present a parallel for what the torrent uploader was doing in order to obtain more public interest.
In reference to your last line, you realize that the vast majority of the political sector is financially vested in ‘taking action’ against piracy, right? And by financially vested I obviously mean bribed by corps like MGM or UMG et al.
I can understand where you’re coming from but it’s not like the commenter lied. Both musk and trump have court cases involving sexual assault in various countries and our adversaries are getting one over on us because of the incompetence of every politician, not just left or right.
Perhaps I am seeing it in a different light but it sure seemed to me like billionaire and politician bashing as opposed to ‘orange man bashing’.
I am of the opinion that these ‘before/after’ memes about twitter are disingenuous because that website has always been a heaping pile of shit and the vast majority of people on it don’t have the mental acumen to actually reflect or critically think on most subjects, and that’s a happy spin on how twitter was before musk bought it.
If anything he just unleashed the fools from every ‘group’ that masterfully fail at grasping even the most basic explanation of nuance and tried to cash in on it (and failed in one of the most typical ways a formerly public company could fail, under the weight of sheer ineptitude).
I recommend EndeavourOS primarily because of it’s ease of use and rolling distro means you’ll have access to the latest bug fixes and patches (and a very active and supportive community), whereas it does come with the drawback of requiring to fix things every now and then if you’ve installed packages from places other than endeavour/Aur or require packages/apps that are older.
Yay (package manager) is very easy to get using as a beginner, however, if you don’t want rolling updates and just large update packages similar in scope to windows service pack updates I’d recommend popos or the sister/base os ubuntu. (fedora apparently may be good in this instance as well but I’ve very little contact with the OS and have been avoiding RHEL-related products recently because of their anti-consumer and anti-open source actions recently).
Ultimately it’s definitely recommended that you try a few distro’s to get a feel for what you like and then customize to your hearts content.
distrowatch.com if you’d like a more in depth review of various distros and what their performance bonuses or problems are.
EndeavourOS with xfce4 is very clean and quick to pick up with their little introductory/learning module that they include (once installed or on live, it will provide a popup that includes the following):

When a Torrent disappears from 1337x, how do you find out what happened?
