bstix, (edited ) to memes in I'm really getting over the enshitification of the internet.

Honestly, I just use the internet less. I’m never going to pay. I can’t be bothered with the loopholes anymore. If it bugs me to pay or subscribe, I leave. I’m fine with them not wanting me as a user, and I hope they’re fine with me not wanting them as a supplier. They don’t have anything that I actually need that badly.

Oddly enough I probably use the internet more than ever. It’s just not that internet.

Mastema,

Weirdly, the only parts of the Internet that I’m really liking these days are Hacker News, Lemmy and the one part that I do pay for, which is Kagi Ultimate. It is very refreshing not to be the product and I do occasionally need to use a search engine for something.

CustodialTeapot,

Kagi AstroTurfing needs to stop… Fuck off.

bdonvr,

SearxNG. FOSS, selfhostable. Don’t pay for a search engine.

PopOfAfrica,

Unfortunately it piggybacks of googles and co’s indexing. What happens if we succeed as a FOSS movement and google goes under?

PopOfAfrica,

People genuinely like Kagi. I dont really see the problem

CustodialTeapot,

I doubt 1% of the comments are genuine users and not themselves botting/faking comments just to inject advertising.

ParetoOptimalDev,

I recommend Kagi at every opportunity, but am sometimes afraid of people assuming its astroturfing like this and not my real opinion.

PopOfAfrica,

Thats just downright conspiratorial

bdonvr,

Yeah YouTube brings me a ton of value and I wouldn’t mind paying a bit for it.

Not $14 a month though.

bstix,

I’m so done with “browsing” YouTube. I also hardly ever click the links anymore when people post them here, and that is because of the ads.

There are some good channels that I occasionally checkout whenever I’m really bored, and I absolutely don’t mind them getting the ad revenue like any other free tv show, but it’s nothing that I can’t do without.

In my opinion, good YT channels who make quality content ought to apply for other mean of distribution that doesn’t scare away viewers. Let’s say that f.i. Numberphile, Veritasium or Primitive Technology were on Netflix or even Disney+, I’d prefer to watch it there. That’s how bad YouTube is.

If YouTube managed to get part of the all-in deals that I have on the other “real” streaming services, then they’d get some fraction of whatever my cellphone carrier pays to those. Right now I just don’t want to bother with it.

madcaesar,

If youtube was a reasonable price I’d pay it. But being google, they not only charge a ridiculous price, but even if you pay that, they’ll STILL sell your data on top.

Furthermore, it being a public company no profit will ever be enough. It doesn’t matter if I paid 30$ a month, the next quarter the 30 billion profit won’t be enough because it didn’t grow from the previous quarter…

Fuck all that.

baggachipz,

And if you buy any hardware from Google, count on it being discontinued and unsupported within a year. Anyone who continues to buy shit from Google is either deluded or a fool, or both.

aberrate_junior_beatnik,

I got a Pixel 5a refurbished because it’s supported by LineageOS. Like a week after buying it I dropped it, cracking the screen. Got on iFixit, ordered a replacement screen, and once it got here spent an evening installing it. No regrets. But I am a fool, so that tracks.

My next phone will be a Fairphone now that they work with US carriers, though.

madcaesar,

Google fanboys are just as stupid as Apple fanboys. It’s like watching two morons fight each other. These mega corps give no fucks about you.

Name and shame!

taaz,

This was/is my main gripe with Beyond All Reason (open source rts game) there is no wiki or forums - for an outsider it looks like 98% of all development talk is done in discord.

Though they do have a good basic knowledge base on their website about the game units and mechanics (but I would love dedicated wiki).

heyoni,

I once dm’d the maintainer of an open source project who got kind of upset at me for not posting an issue in GitHub. I got it, it made sense and the guy explained that it was all about visibility.

Rolando, to memes in You're just a kid, how would you know what you want for the rest of your life?

Imagine the following scenario: you meet someone in college, and when you graduate at 22 you don’t want to split up. They say sure, let’s live together, but we need to get engaged; if it doesn’t work out we can just break it off. After a year you realize your lives are much better together. You decide to get married but not to have kids until you’re 30. If it doesn’t work out you can divorce, but you sign a prenup and at least no kids would be involved.

If you both have clear and compatible career goals, that scenario saves you a lot of dating drama and gives you valuable support. I wouldn’t call someone in that scenario “weird.”

ThatWeirdGuy1001,
@ThatWeirdGuy1001@lemmy.world avatar

I think the main point here is people around those ages aren’t fully capable of making those kinds of decisions in the first place.

There’s a reason why most marriages end in divorce after all.

Get married before you have a clue. Get a clue after being married a couple years. Get a divorce because you realize you had no idea what you were doing.

Lucidlethargy,

This is 100% a data-driven fact. It can’t apply to everyone, but it’s a really great average.

Those who wait until after 25 have a 25% chance of not getting divorced.

Francois, (edited )

The way you phrased it is not quite what the study says.

They’re not “25% likely of not divorcing” (which would mean there’s a 75% chance of divorce).

They’re “25% less likely of divorcing”

What purpose does engagement and marriage serve there? “Must be this financially trapped to continue?”

variants,

Yeah I’ve noticed at least a lot from my high-school group that dating for about 4 years is a good amount of time, me personally and a lot of close friends seemed to have hit their hardships in a relationship around that 4 year mark. Also moving is a good test about how you do in stress haha

terminhell, (edited )

Been married for 10 years now. There’s one thing I’ve found to be the ultimate relationship tester:

Furniture Assembly.

If you can survive assembling a few pieces of IKEA puzzles together it’s probably going to last XD

SomeKindaName,

I just don’t get this. I’ve never had any issues putting together furniture or dated anyone who had trouble with it. I can’t think of a single ex where furniture assembly was an issue.

immutable,

I think furniture assembly is more about being able to work together for a common goal and communicate what you need the other person to do and listen to what they need you to do.

For some reason a lot of people struggle to assemble ikea stuff (I honestly don’t know why, I’ve assembled dozens of items and it’s not rocket science). But there’s definitely been moments when I’ve been assembling some shelf and need my wife to assist with a two person step. If the assembly has been frustrating you have a really good test of how well can the two of you communicate through frustration and work together.

So maybe you are great at ikea assembly and don’t have the frustration factor, or you are a wonderful communicator and listener. For a lot of people though it’s that “this is the 12th step, I’m annoyed because I did the 9th step backwards and had to undo some shit, I’ve stripped this fucking screw… I’m gonna slide this piece and you need to guide it past the shelves, past them, you see how it’s hitting the fucking piece of wood, I need it not to do that!!!”

You probably shouldn’t marry everyone you can build a shelf with, but if you can’t effectively communicate when frustrated doing something trivial like building a shelf with someone you should work on that before tying the knot.

terminhell,

^^^^ Exactly what I meant 😅

shuzuko,

Our way of surviving furniture assembly is for him to Go Away And Let Me Do It, because I can follow directions and he just tries to slap things together without looking xD

I love my husband! Knowing when to just let the other person get on with shit is a pretty good litmus test, I agree, lol.

terminhell,

Maybe it’s bad luck, but half the time the instructions are physically impossible to follow on certain steps.

brbposting,

Better than teaching stick shift?

If anybody still knows what that is!

OneCardboardBox, to linuxmemes in Never again

Firstly, discord is entirely the wrong medium for documentation.

Secondly, documentation should be at least as accessible as the code. That is to say, if I can view the code without creating an account for some service, then I should also be able to read the documentation too.

Serinus,

Agreed. I may not want to mix my discord identity with whatever project I’m looking at. I especially don’t want to mix my personal online identity with my professional identity. I post too much politics for that.

dustyData,

Documentation is bad enough. But it’s worse when that’s the only channel to get support. I once read a project maintainer boast that they never read the bug reports and issues on github and if anyone had a bug to just chat him up discord. I mean, dude, no wonder nobody uses your software or takes it seriously. Much less want to collaborate on the development.

shadow,

I can’t understand why someone would want to do that. Maybe it’s my help desk and IT upbringing, but for the few software tools and things I’ve made, if you chat me without filing a bug/issue on GitHub, I’m not gonna help you.

@southsamurai@sh.itjust.works avatar

Don’t the chips kinda mute the tang if the sauerkraut?

ChucklesMacLeroy,

Maybe…a little…?

southsamurai,
@southsamurai@sh.itjust.works avatar

I’ve always enjoyed chips as a quasi palate cleanser for dishes that run fatty and have sauerkraut. Which is a fairly small range of foods. But it’s because the flatness of the potatoes, the single note saltiness, and the relatively lower fat levels do a good job of refreshing the palate alongside something else pickled and/or a beverage.

But it seems like that would make this dog have less “oomph” to the taste buds. That’s one of the great things about kraut on a wiener, how bold it is. It makes a great texture and taste contrast with the usual dogs out there.

It’s an interesting choice, but not one I would have made because of that.

I think if I did this, I’d have to do a side by side with and without the chips. The difference isn’t going to be massive, but it could be enough to shift the enjoyment level.

Now, chips on a dog is something I’ve done before. Plenty of times, actually. That crunch, and the mild flavor do indeed help cut through some flavors. But, typically, that’s going to be most desirable with things like simple condiments and maybe a bit of relish.

You know, a bit of mustard and/or ketchup is a good basic dog. You then add a little something extra to kick it up a notch without killing the simplicity of it. Some crumbled chips, even if it’s a pile on the plate and you dip into it (which is my preferred way with simple dogs), and it changes things just enough that each of the individual flavors gets separated and then melds on the tongue.

I dunno, maybe I’m just weirdly into hotdogs lol.

ColeSloth, to memes in You're just a kid, how would you know what you want for the rest of your life?

As people wait longer to marry over the generations, the divorce rate has increased and level of “happiness” has declined.

Causation yadda yadda yadda. You still can’t actually disprove its why.

pingveno,

The divorce rate among millennials is decreasing in the US compared to earlier generations. That said, reducing it to how long people are waiting to marry ignores a lot of other factors. For instance, low income couples are more likely to never marry, their relationships are less stable, and if they do get married they are more likely to get divorced.

hperrin,

What’s wrong with the divorce rate increasing? Like, no joke, is that not a good thing? More people getting out of bad relationships seems like a better outcome.
