ZeDoTelhado, to memes in About to get drafted

For me was not grand parents but my dad was referring me ALL the time to other people that went to his workshop that I “know about computers” (almost is some sort of arcane knowledge). I remember once somebody approached me with the typical question:

  • Are you the one that “knows about computers”?
  • (cringing inside already) yes that’s me
  • You know, I have this fridge that won’t cool…

I just left even before he finished the sentence. My dad later that day asked me why I was rude to someone (I know it was this guy). I just told him “imagine you know about cars and somebody asks you fix their fridge”. Didn’t even need to say more.

So for some people in my place, " knowing about computers " means arcane knowledge with nearly everything with a digital screen on it.

Bruh, I’m 33 and I started playing Subnautica for the first time a few weeks ago only to realize that in the first day I accidentally played for 10 hours. You just need to find the right game for you to revitalize your interest in gaming. Whatever that game may be!

eya,
@eya@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Subnautica just does that to you. I completed an entire hardcore playthrough in a single session once (Mostly because I already knew what I was doing but it was still like 14-15 hours straight).

GluWu,

Is VR in subnautica an actual way to play or just a once in a while gimmick. I’ve had it in my library since back when it was beta and have never played more than a few minutes. Installed it since it does VR through steamlink but haven’t played yet.

BlueLineBae,
@BlueLineBae@midwest.social avatar

I honestly couldn’t say as I startled playing the normal version. But as spooky as that game can get, I don’t think I’d even want to try VR version lol.

GluWu,

The real horrors in our reality are just depressing, so I’d prefer to distract myself with spooky scary subnautica monsters.

Leon,

The vanilla VR implementation in Subnautica is very old and kind of tacked onto the game as an afterthought. You have to play with a regular controller and I found the menus to be in the most eye-strain spot possible.

I know there is at least one VR mod to fix it and bring in motion controls but I’ve never tried it.

Rai,

I love VR and Subnautica but Subnautica is not a good game to play in VR. You can make it kinda work with mods, but it does feel very janky.

GluWu,

Dang. I thought maybe since it gained so much support and got so big since from when I got it in a $15 indie humble bundle that it might actually be a good one. I’ll finally try it tonight.

Have you tried the VR mod for Firewatch? I just got it on a random steam sale for $2, played a bit on my steamdeck, and was thinking the entire time I wish this was VR.

Rai,

I haven’t! I beat it in flat mode and loved it though!

GluWu,

I haven’t gotten too far in, so I want to get the VR mod installed and restart. It’s so good so far, though the intro really does suck, like emotionally. I think it’s a perfect format for VR with the walking/ basic interaction format, nothing too complex, and great comfy visuals. I hope it works.

Sometimes, I feel like I should wait until things get better and fixed, but sometimes that leads to me missing things. I wish there were more open source, hacking, development, just community for VR. I’ve used it since Google cardboard and things really have never taken off. I think with steamlink now streaming to quest headsets, that really help.

XTornado, to memes in About to get drafted

For really old people… I am more comprehensive. But man some people I swear… Like they ask me to help them with stuff I haven’t even used either, like I am going to do the same as you read, think and act. But some people seem to suddenly forgot to even know how to read or think.

I haven’t been using social media for 10+ years besides some on/off shitposting on hacker news. I’d love to find something for music management that’s not sucky and uber corpo like Spotify. I use Bandcamp for buying from niche artists and sound cloud for finding new labels, but sound cloud is too Spotifyish now. Deezer used to be nice before they started region restrictions.

TurtleTourParty,

I’m currently using Qobuz. The interface is a bit clunky and the catalog is smaller, but there are no podcasts, audiobooks, or social features.

My favorite ever streaming service was Mog. It was bought by Beats and ruined.

RGB3x3,

For those in the US that can’t use Quobuz (like myself), Tidal has social features, but you can turn them off.

I moved to Tidal from YT Music because of its awful bloat and love it. It’s simple and I’ve not found it to be lacking in anything. Some listings may be wrong sometimes, but they’re super responsive to feedback for fixing it.

TurtleTourParty,

Qobuz is available in the US (Qobuz Availability).

I tried Tidal for a while back when they only had the high-fi tier. It was nice but not worth the $20 a month IMO. It looks like they have cheaper tiers now.

Another plus is both services sound much better than Spotify.

RGB3x3,

Oh, I had literally checked it 3 weeks ago and it wasn’t. Cool!

johannesvanderwhales,

I know I’ve been playing BG3 recently and I’m struggling a bit with the mental energy required to play it after work. It’s something that really requires full attention for a long period of time and a lot of days I’d rather just do something simpler.

TranscendentalEmpire,

That’s definitely a large aspect for me. But, another large part is that the games just seem to be less fun. Online play has gotten so competitive that half the time people just rage quit, and single player games have just become grind machines with pay to skip options.

No, I’m not going to spend my limited free time getting a virtual job gathering wolf pelts. No, I’m not going to give you real money to avoid being virtually employed by an NPC.

I feel like game mechanics that were originally designed to immerse you into the game are now just being used to pad the game time. I won’t even buy a game anymore unless I can mod it. I refuse to spend extra hours of my time just because the only realistic aspect of the game is a limited inventory.

candyman337,

AAA games are trash agreed, I stick to indie games

M137,
@M137@lemmy.world avatar

Those kind of games exist, but so does every other kind. And you aren’t forced to play only new games. Literally every game ever is available for you to play. Every person that says stuff like you seem like you think the only games available are the most known and most recent AAA games. It’s like only going to the most recently opened restaurants in your area, especially chain brand ones, and complaining about you not liking the food and then deciding that all food is like that.

The mode human body contains enough bones to make an entire skeleton. The average human body doesn’t have enough.

Greg,
@Greg@lemmy.ca avatar

The additional ~200 bones from fetuses in late stage pregnant woman would be more than the missing bones from amputees etc. OPs statement is accurate.

jaybone,

Wouldn’t they be too small though?

JaymesRS,

QuaternionsRock,

You can’t use one unfused half-bone in place of one full bone >:(

What if we use the little fetus bones to replace some of the smaller adult bones, and take those smaller adult bones to replace some bigger adult bones, and so on until we have a big ol’ femur?

JusticeForPorygon, (edited )
@JusticeForPorygon@lemmy.world avatar

The word average can technically refer to arithmetic mean, median, mode, or range. That’s why you were probably taught them at the same time. That’s also why tests like the ACT tend to have a * at the top that says something along the lines of “Unless otherwise stated, the word average indicates arithmetic mean.”

morrowind,
@morrowind@lemmy.ml avatar

I have never in my life seen it refer to anything but the mean

JusticeForPorygon,
@JusticeForPorygon@lemmy.world avatar

Because mean is the most common form of average. But, for example, when referring to salaries, the words median and average are often used interchangeably.

BA834024112, (edited )

This isn’t true at all

Edit: well they may be used interchangebly, but they’re also used incorrectly in that case

dream_weasel,

Are infinitesimally shaved average bones not bones? Idk who is the bone authority responsible for making that decision.

Tremble,

There are a lot of people missing bones, but I don’t think anyone has extra, so….

CulturedLout,

What about people with extra fingers and toes? Parasitic twins?

Goatmom,

Pregnant women as well. Now their human body contains two skeletons, thus raising the average number of bones in a human body by a considerable amount. I would guess there’s probably more pregnant women than there are people missing limbs.

CulturedLout,

Oh yeah, totally forgot about pregnancy. That should count too.

Tremble,

Ok then technically we are all born with an extra set of teeth. That we lose. So a full skeleton contains all the baby teeth as well.

Goatmom,

Traditionaly when talking about the skeleton, we refer to the adult skeleton seeing as an adolescent skeleton have more bones that then fuse. I agree that we need to take that into account, but I don’t believe the statement would be referring to an adolescent skeleton.

Exatron,

Some people were born with extra fingers, and sometimes entire extra limbs.

TheRealKuni,

My wife has an extra rib above her collarbone.

dream_weasel,

Plenty of people do. My sister for example had bones in her feet that never fused and had to have an extra removed. I guess that’s pretty common

webghost0101,

Different perspective: Even if you miss a limb your body contains the full 100% of the skeleton you can find in a person missing that limb.

There still complete human beings even if their body has a unique challenge.

ohitsbreadley,

I appreciate what you’re saying here - people come in all shapes and sizes, with different abilities, limb counts, etc. Every one is a human being deserving respect and dignity.

But OP didn’t say “a complete human being” - it said “a complete human skeleton.”

If an individual is missing a limb, by birth or by accident, they don’t have a complete skeleton. It’s a plain fact. Doesn’t mean they are any less human.

MacNCheezus,
@MacNCheezus@lemmy.today avatar

Actually, the average human body contains more than one skeleton.

https://justsimplymom.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/pregnancy-6.png

evidences,

This depends entirely on how many people there are out there with missing limbs.

MacNCheezus,
@MacNCheezus@lemmy.today avatar

It would have to be a lot considering that a baby has a full set of bones while a missing limb is generally only a few of them.

evidences,

Half the bones in a adult human are in the hands and feet. I don’t know if there’s enough missing limbs to offset fetus skeletons but I there’s a whole lot of bones missing in a double amputee.

MacNCheezus,
@MacNCheezus@lemmy.today avatar

Babies have up to 270 bones at birth (instead of 206 in an adult), which makes up for at least one double amputee (hands have 27 bones and feet have 26 each).

One playlist, “Liked Songs” gang supremacy.

affiliate,

i like to make sequels every year or so. i’m currently on “liked songs 4”. it gives me the chaos of a liked songs playlist, but with the comfort that only recently liked songs will play. (i will never unlike a song)

BunnyKnuckles,
@BunnyKnuckles@startrek.website avatar

This is my strategy too, except I make new playlists every January and seperate the songs by year. So I have 2017, 2018, 2019, etc playlists of songs that came out that year. Then I go through the songs from that year and add the absolute bangers to an ultimate playlist. I also never unlike a song.

Baku,

When I was first developing my music taste I did this too. I had “songs I like 2018 edition”, “songs I like 2019 edition” then discovered Spotify and everything morphed into a singular “liked songs” playlist :D

Solution to opening tiktoks without using tiktok app or site, not how to stop ur friends sending u garbage.

It made me think… mpv player can play basically any link you throw at it (thanks to yt-dlp), and we also have mpv on Android, so why can’t we do it there as well. And sure enough, I found this github.com/mpv-android/mpv-android/pull/58, someone baked yt-dlp in mpv for Android, making it possible to open link in mpv (share >> play in mpv)

It works for instagram and all other shit.

cor315,

Well that’s pretty cool

IndefiniteBen,

While this is useful, it could be even better! If the AndroidManifest.xml also contained support for Facebook, TikTok and Instagram links it could be set to directly open them instead needing to share it to mpv.

So do we need to download something from your link to make that work? Or is it already part of MPV?

If you are sending the links through discord/chat with embed add vx in front of tiktok and it becomes playable in discord itself. (www.tiktok.com/t/ZT8b81Gu1/ -> www.vxtiktok.com/t/ZT8b81Gu1/)

In a removed move, a normal tiktok link will have a play button on the icon like it should play, but can’t. This one actually will.
