Parastie, to linux in Imagine Linux on an Arm SoC that benchmark better than Apple's M2 Max!
@Parastie@lemmy.world avatar

The benchmarks for the M3 have the single core and multicore performances way past similar Intel and AMD chips. Qualcomm’s mobile chips are still no where near Apple’s mobile chips. I do not believe for a second that Qualcomm will catch up to the M2 on their first release.

Aux,

M3 is not faster than any AMD or Intel. And PC chips are using very old process nodes. Once Intel gets to 2nm, Apple chips will feel like dumbphone SOCs from the early 2000-s running J2ME applets.

kalleboo,

Once Intel gets to 2nm

So in like 10 years from now?

Aux,

Who knows? Intel works in mysterious ways.

cybersandwich,

Isn’t Intel still stuck on 12nm?

TheMadnessKing,

They have moved to 10nm nodes which have density of 7nm nodes of TSMC afaik. They call these nodes Intel 7.

Afaik, Intel is also planning to move Intel 5 and other nodes.

Aux,

10nm.

MonkderZweite,

Apple cooks only with water too.

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble,

Keep in mind this is with up to an 80 watt TDP vs an effectively 3 year old architecture in a select few tests. The M2 was basically just an overclocked M1, with the Pro/Max models getting 2 extra cores. This is qualcomms best case scenario.

pr06lefs,

The Qualcomm x elite benchmarks as faster than the M3 for multicore. Not too surprising as I think it’s 12 cores vs 10. For single core its something like 2700 vs 3200.

Laptops running x elite are supposed to be available mid 2024.

zik, (edited )

That’s absolutely not true. The M3 Max just about brings Apple performance up to similar levels as Intel and AMD. The Ryzen 9 7945HX3D for example is a laptop processor which trades blows with the M3 on benchmarks - single core the M3’s slightly faster and multi core the Ryzen’s slightly faster - and in performance per watt the Ryzen’s marginally better. So really it’s just catching up with older laptop processors from other manufacturers.

And if you venure outside the laptop space to compare ultimate speed it’s nowhere near the fastest, particularly in multi-threaded. Its multi-threaded performance is around 13% of the AMD EPYC 9754 Bergamo for example.

RustyOperator, to linux in GNOME is (Gradually!) Dropping X11

They still haven’t added DRM Leasing to Wayland, which is needed for SteamVR to work and considering KDE (has had it for literally years, since 2021) and even COSMIC DE (and it’s not even out yet) both already have it, it’s just rediculous.

vanderbilt,
@vanderbilt@beehaw.org avatar

GNOME’s mantra is pretty much remove functionality if the maintenance burden is anything beyond lifting a finger. This might end up biting them however as it’s caused them to fall behind in supporting the features enterprises and consumers want out of a Linux desktop. Combine this with their weird obsession of making a pseudo-touch interface and it’s just not working.

jjhanger, (edited ) to linux in I'm Done With Windows, Are you?

Depends on the context.

Me - Yes. I use Debian 12. No intention any time to go back because of how much I love using Debian. May fire up a VM of Arch so I can run some specific AUR packages I am curious to try out, but we’ll see. I am cautious to go on another distor hopping bender between Debian and Arch as they are my 2 favorite distros and I am easily led to do that.

Work - No and that is fine me. I have no control over that and I’m still productive with Windows/Microsoft products.

Family - I am the tech support person of the household. I prefer for people to use what they are comfortable with because that’s less on me to maintain.

    LiveLM, (edited ) to piracy in New Flashcard for Nintendo Switch. Team Xecuter might be behind it.

    Funny enough this thing will likely be more useful for playing actual backups than piracy.
    The telemetry on the Switch is crazy, and since all carts have certificates, Nintendo will know if your game is a pirated copy and they’ll ban your console.
    And we know the Switch keeps logs like crazy, so even if you’re offline while using this thing it won’t help… unless you stay permanently offline, but at that point you might as well just mod your Switch anyway.

    Quexotic,

    My thoughts exactly when this was posted earlier. “Checking to see if this game can be played” should bring a quick end to this.

    Tattorack,
    @Tattorack@lemmy.world avatar

    The video said as much. Although this depends on how the card works with certificates. Right now the only thing we have is a promise by the creators. It will be interesting to track the development and discussion of this on GBAtemp.

    Personally, though, I don’t actually need this. I got a Steam Deck. It handles Switch games much better than I expected when the Deck was first announced and I can play online with friends who also use emulation.

    LiveLM,

    Steam Deck. It handles Switch games much better than I expected

    Oh that’s nice to hear. I have not been keeping up with Switch emulation at all because my CPU was weak for it. Maybe I should try again and see if it has gotten easier to run.

    Tattorack,
    @Tattorack@lemmy.world avatar

    I’ve been playing Breath of the Wild, Mariokart 8, and Super Mario Wonder.

    Breath of the Wild has the same framerate issues as the Switch, Mariokart 8 runs super smooth, Super Mario Wonder has the occasional stutter, but given how new the game is om confident that’ll be resolved with a few updates.

    LiveLM,

    Do not play Breath of the Wild via Switch Emulation, play it via Wii U emulation instead with Cemu.
    You get the exact same game but Wii U emulation is easier to run, more well developed and has more options for adjusting framerate and graphics.
    You can convert your Switch save to work with the Wii U version.

    jagoan,

    unless you stay permanently offline, but at that point you might as well just mod your Switch anyway.

    I feel like that’s the point of this cart. Hard modding is near impossible for most people. The choice is sending your switch to random person to be modded, which I doubt it’ll be cheap. Or just get a flash cart.

    She puts a sim card in another phone that’s used as a hotspot. The title suggests she doesn’t use a sim.

    Catsrules,

    But she explains why that is different in the video.

    The idea is the hotspot is an entirely separate device, that just provides Internet access/VPN access. Your not logging in to your VoIP provider or your messaging applications using that hotspot. You can also purchase the device and service anonymously making it much harder to connect to your identity to the hotspot.

    This separates the baseband processor from our sensitive data that is stored on our phone. This also forces your phone to actually use the VPN. (There has been reports that Apple and Google bypass the VPN in some cases if you use a VPN on your phone.)

    dustyData,

    I read the third part is planned to be the first beats of Messiah. Essentially the complete arc of the life of Paul Atreides.

    AngryCommieKender,

    Sounds like it would be wrapping up the Paul Atreides story, and laying the groundwork for the Emperor of Dune Saga in the last 15-30 minutes of the film. That should still be enough time to deal with Paul Atreides.

    dustyData, (edited )

    The only certainty I read is that Villeneuve doesn’t want to do children of Dune or beyond. But producers want mini series out of those and a Bene Gesserit prequel series that’s already on the works.
