kreynen, (edited ) in Those who chose "never" in a "now or never" moment. How is it going for you?
@kreynen@kbin.social avatar

I don't own a timeshare. Feel pretty good about that decision.

The numbers they were showing us seemed to make sense. If we spent an average of X on vacations for Y years compared to the cost of the timeshare and fees, the timeshare was cheaper AND we could trade our week in a ski area for timeshares anywhere in the world. How could we not buy into this? Might have signed, but when they told us we couldn't take any of the information with us and had to decide NOW, I knew something wasn't right. Had to say no for almost an hour, but but we were eventually allowed to leave the "no obligation presentation" required for our "free" weekend.

When I did more research, I found dozens of people trying to unload their purchases for far less than the company was selling weeks to new members.

I'll NEVER own anything using that kind of sales strategy.

crazyCat,

I have this side dream that when I’m retired I’m going to go around to all the vacation spots where they prey on people for this, dress and act like an easy mark and mess with these terrible people.

PP_BOY_, in Which of your favorite creators content quality went downhill very quickly?
@PP_BOY_@lemmy.world avatar

CinemaSins. They were always kind of bottom-of-the-barrel, but their early videos pretty much just amounted to narrating the IMDB trivia pages so it was harmless. I went back and checked in on their channel for the first time in 8+ years and holy shit they’ve gotten bad. Videos running a quarter the length of the movie they’re doing with word-salad voice over that doesn’t even make sense.

Also: “[female actor] isn’t 18 in this scene” was just as fucked up in 2012 as it is in 2023.

pineapplelover,

It was kinda funny when I watched their maybe 15 minute takes. They kinda pull stuff out of their asses, intro to long? Sin.

WhiskyTangoFoxtrot,
Mayonnaise,

I agree, I don’t think that CinemaSins was ever really good, but it definitely got worse over time. His content has been criticized to death and there are some good commentary videos covering the issues with his channel. I will plug CinemaWins as a pretty good “counter” channel. I don’t watch it because I’m not really into that kind of content these days, but the videos that I have seen are worthwhile if you’re looking to fill a similar hole.

infectoid, in Does anyone else resent the links to Reddit?
@infectoid@lemmy.world avatar

I’m cool with people stealing content from Reddit and posting it here. In fact I encourage it.

But yeah. A bot just auto posting is tiresome. No real curation of the best stuff.

CosmicTurtle,

I’ve blocked L4sbot and lemmy is substantially better.

Annoyed_Crabby, in Excluding the obvious ones such as politics, what topics can't you stand listening to people talk about?

Sport. I just not interested in discussing the topic as a spectator.

Ohh and MLM shit.

agitatedpotato, in Do the right wing women in relationships with right wing guys think it's like a draco malfoy thing where they're a good guy underneath?

Some women I know in this position believe they’re somehow different or better than the people who the cops treat like animals and that it would never happen to them, only to the undesirables that deserve it. Over 40% of them are wrong according to statistics.

bernieecclestoned,

What statistics?

givesomefucks,

Cops are waaaaay more likely to commit domestic abuse against their spouses and children.

It’s unproven if shitty violent people are more likely to become cops, or if the training they receive and the culture they work in turns normal people into violent psychopaths.

But whichever is true, a cop is more likely to turn to violence in a disagreement/confrontation than pretty much any occupation.

Remmock,

I can guarantee that the training and culture certainly encourage those who are already likely to be shitty violent people to feel comfortable about it.

agitatedpotato,

olis.oregonlegislature.gov/liz/2017R1/…/132808

These one, oldies but goodies. If you take verbal abuse out of the equation the number drops 12 points to 28% instead of 40% and that’s the biggest ‘controversy’ I remember about these numbers. But I don’t think abuse thats only verbal helps someone think about their spouse as a good guy so imo the whole number is useful for this case. Theres also a strong bias in favor of the cops as its an observed phenomenon that cases of anything against cops, especially Domestic Violence, don’t often go very far, there are very real blind spots in the justice system for cops.

winterayars,
bernieecclestoned,

Thanks

jasory,

The wildly speculative ones that were the result of an informal ( and since retracted) survey, that used a very broad definition of domestic abuse to include yelling.

It’s basically the 13/50 dog whistle of the ACAB crowd.

hedgehogging_the_bed, in People who have those talking buttons for their pet, how long did it take for them to catch on, and do they really work?

About a week from setting up Button #1 “Go For A Walk” and us pressing it before we go for walks to my 5yo rescue mutt pressing it himself when prompted “Do you want to go for a walk?” After about a month he was always hitting the button before we went out but often would come bother us in his old ways (nosing under our hands, whining, pawing at our feet) before he would hit the button to get our attention first.

We added “Puzzle” in month 2 because he only gets treats when he solves a “puzzle” (mix of dog puzzle toys and treat stuffed Kong). That one caught on immediately.

We thought he was getting them mixed up because he would give us all the signs we used to interpret as wanting to go out like a yawn and stretch, hit both buttons, and then stand next to the puzzle basket like we were dumb. We moved the two buttons really far apart.

The reality is he wants puzzles because he’s bored far more often then he ever really wanted to walk, he’s down from 4 walks a day to 2 once we started to trust that he really knew what he was telling us.

We added a “Food” button but he never used consistently because he understands the meal names “breakfast”, “lunch”, “dinner” better then the word “food” for mealtimes. We serve meals at the same time every day anyway so we eventually took the button back up because he never used it.

RememberTheApollo, in Good “Buy for Life” Brands

Doc Martens are now Chinese made IIRC and don’t last.

Solovair is the the company that used to make Martens and you can still buy that style there. I hear they’re much better than Martens, but also occasionally a mixed review that they didn’t last very long.

I’ll offer a mixed review for carhartt…while they used to be strictly workwear, they’ve started putting up retail spaces in designer clothing areas. Prices have shot up. I had a belt from them that fell apart pretty quick with normal wear. Got a work shirt that’s doing pretty good though. IMO they’re headed down the same road as a lot of brands that get popular - price hikes with decreased quality.

HurlingDurling,
@HurlingDurling@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve actually gone to Dickies and they feel as great as Carheart used to be, but it’s too soon to tell yet

Cowbee,

Carhartt WIP is designer workwear, modern cuts and softer, higher quality materials that aren’t designed to withstand harsh labor.

Carhartt standard is still classic workwear.

I’ve needed to use Carhartt standard recently and it’s still good, relatively affordable and very durable workwear.

RememberTheApollo,

Good to hear the real stuff is still available and affordable. Thanks.

gac11,

I just got some Carhartt “wool” socks for Christmas. They are pilling like crazy after 1-2 wears/washes. They’re less than half wool, so that might be the issue.

I do WFH and I don’t wear shoes in the house, but that’s literally why I wanted wool socks.

Mobiuthuselah,

I asked my parents for wool socks for Christmas twenty years ago and they gave me a few pairs each of three or four different brands. The ones that have lasted the longest and include a lifetime warranty is Redhead from Bass Pro. I’ve only exchanged them once or twice. They’re tall and thick with high pile wool. I’ve worn a pair almost every day for probably nine months out of the year, sometimes year-round, ever since I got them.

hushable,

I’ll offer a mixed review for carhartt…while they used to be strictly workwear, they’ve started putting up retail spaces in designer clothing areas.

Carhartt and Carhartt Work in Progress are two different brands, the former is the good workwear one, the later is the designer fashionable stuff. Stick to their non WIP stuff

RememberTheApollo,

Didn’t know that, thanks. Figured the retail shops went up so quality was on the way down.

nickwitha_k,

Slight correction: From my understanding, Solovair is the company that purchased the cobbling machinery/factory that DocMartens sold off when they fully off-shored. DocMartens then contracted with them for their limited release, price-inflated, Made in UK boots. As the designs are long out of patent, Solovair also manufactures their own. I see Docs at a 15% markup, just for the name.

@uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

My USMC recruiting officer didn’t want me to go home and confer with family, but sign the papers right away before I walked out of the office. That’s when I decided he seemed a bit too desperate.

Dozens of stories from vets later (many with TBIs who couldn’t get proper treatment) I engage in counter-recruitment now.

AngryishHumanoid, in Is there an artist whose work you love but was a shitty person?

Tom Cruise. I don’t know what weird pathways cross in a brain to get that deep into Scientology without realizing what bullshit it is, but he is an amazing actor. He understands the craft, he is not shy about poking fun of himself, and by all accounts he is a consummate professional and treats the film crew well and has given gifts/thrown parties for them, etc.

But Scientology, yeesh…

RBWells,

I want to hate him so badly. But he is so good. I remember when he was cast as the vampire and I was pissed, having read the books it made no sense that Mr. Top Gun Fast Times at Ridgemont High as an undead vampire.

Saw the movie and had to eat my words, he had become a gaunt undead vampire. What the actual fuck. He was fantastic. Ever since that, I kind of trust he will be good in anything.

Num10ck,

wait Tom Cruise wasnt even in Fast Times??

AngryishHumanoid,

See how he just disappears into the role? We never even knew he was IN it!

RBWells,

Oh God you are right I am just conflating all those movies I avoided so successfully. I just mean until then he played characters so straight and gung ho and active and shiny. No way I could have cast him, whoever did saw something that nobody else did and they were right.

I still want to hate him. But do think he’s a gifted actor.

Blamemeta, in Honestly - How much will you sacrifice for a better world?

The first major issue is “How do I know it will work? How do I know the sacrifice won’t be in vain?”

Even if I just up commit suicide, cutting my carbon emissions to zero, private planes will still fly, we’ll still ship plastic trinkets across the pacific, still destroy habitat, etc.

Its defeatist, but unless we get the rich on board, shit sucks.

gravitas_deficiency,

Well, I’ve heard people say that rich people are pretty delicious, so that could be an alternate plan…

Yeah that did it for me as well. I was a huge fan of Apollo until the developer decided to shut it down because of that.

Luckily Lemmy fills the gap pretty well, and the Voyager app is almost as good as Apollo used to be.
