magnetosphere, (edited ) in What's the simplest thing humans are too dumb to grasp?
@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

Objective reality that conflicts with our biases and preconceived ideas. We are really, really bad at handling that in a healthy manner, and WAY too good at denial and self-delusion.

otp, in Customs Officers: Have you ever laughed out loud when someone gave you their passport and they had an… unusual name?

I had a job where I had to say customer’s names. Usually first name was fine, but maybe 1% of people hated it when you called them by it without asking, and some even hated being asked.

So last name it was.

Everything was fine.

… until Mr. Butt showed up.

WeLoveCastingSpellz, in Hey! Did you hear that Kissinger died?

Who the hell is Kissinger

Ensign_Crab,

Was Kissinger.

reflex, (edited )
@reflex@kbin.social avatar

Who the hell is Kissinger

One of Gatsby's partygoers in The Great Gatsby. One of the few who went to his funeral at the end, if I recall correctly. 😏

stoy,

One of the worst people in modern history.

GuyDudeman, in Spotify Wrapped 2023 is out, what's your top artist and top song for the year?
@GuyDudeman@lemmy.world avatar
TheCrispyDud,
@TheCrispyDud@kbin.social avatar

Man this looks like the bins when I worked at a record store in 2005.

Globulart,

I thought exactly the same, if GuyDudeman isn’t in his mid thirties I’d be stunned.

toomanypancakes, in Spotify Wrapped 2023 is out, what's your top artist and top song for the year?
@toomanypancakes@lemmy.world avatar

For me Delain is my top artist, and Surgery from The Vincent Black Shadow was my top song!

RanchOnPancakes, (edited )
@RanchOnPancakes@lemmy.world avatar

I have no idea how that is. But our usernames are…related. So, I felt compelled to respond.

edit: that Vincent Black Shadow song is pretty good

toomanypancakes,
@toomanypancakes@lemmy.world avatar

The Vincent Black Shadow is fantastic but they broke up way too early and only have two albums :(

Public_Tumbleweed, in What is the most terryifying siren noise?
linearchaos,
@linearchaos@lemmy.world avatar

HOLY CRAP, that’s not a warning siren, that thins out the crowd by giving everyone in range a heart attack.

Valeena,
@Valeena@lemmings.world avatar

I was shocked when it started playing. But I find it more annoying than worrying compared to the other ones in the thread

MedicPigBabySaver, in What current U.S presidential candidates are most in favor of legalizing pot?

Vote Biden. Only legit option to block out the Cheeto chimp.

CameronDev, in Unix and Linux System Administration Handbook?

I’m of the opinion that computer textbooks are out of date the second they are published. That one was published in 2017, so 6 years ago, which is an eternity. It might have some generally useful advice, but in terms of resources, google and online wikis are going to be more up to date (still probably outdated, but less so, and free).

banneryear1868,

I like how computer textbooks organize general concepts, similar to what I got out of formal education.

Tippon,

Yeah, exactly this. Your best bet is to sign up to one of the Linux communities here and read through some of the posts.

Braindead,

The big difference is that a book is structured to teach you bit by bit. One of the issues of learning a new subject is that you don’t know what you don’t know. Something structured like a book solves this.

That being said, a six year old book is ancient when talking about computer related stuff…

0x4E4F,

Maybe just the basic GNU tools that come with every dostro, but other than that… yeah, that is ancient.

maryjayjay, (edited )

Though implementation specifics may change, the foundational concepts remain the same.

JimmyBigSausage, in Is lemmy.ml down?

Alchemy,
@Alchemy@lemmy.world avatar
Ejh3k, in Those of you who work 8+ hours outside in the cold regularly, how do you dress for the job?

I prefer natural fibers because I think they breathe better and keep me better regulated. And as someone that works outside year round in the Midwest, layers are what work. I have found that keeping my chest the warmest, it helps keep the rest of me warm as well.

Just don’t sweat, or if you do, be down to the lowest layer possible. And when you go in, get down to the lowest layer to air out the top layers and to help regulate your body heat.

malockin, in What was the last dumb phone you had before your first smartphone?
@malockin@lemmy.world avatar

A Nokia 3100 … it was the first phone I bought, and I kept it through college and beyond.

The thing was a beast :-)

128x128 pixel screen, with 12-bit RGB. No WiFi, no Bluetooth. Had some web access with WAP (no not that! “Wireless Access Protocol”). It did have a camera module though /rofl

And best of all, the battery lasted a week!

vinnymac, (edited ) in What was the last dumb phone you had before your first smartphone?

I had a pink Moto SLVR L7

phone

Digestive_Biscuit,
@Digestive_Biscuit@feddit.uk avatar

I had the same model but in black. I still have it somewhere.

elint,

Same! I’m pretty sure that was also my smallest phone, before they started going the other direction.

netburnr, in What was the last dumb phone you had before your first smartphone?
@netburnr@lemmy.world avatar

LG Env, I actually miss it.

Bishma,
@Bishma@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I had the env2. Hands down, my favorite phone to date.

droidpenguin,

Oh ya I remember wanting that one a lot! I think it was too expensive for me at the time, so ended up with the alias 2 but I envied anyone who had one of those.

ediculous,

ENV2 gang. Great phone.

Bebo, in What are some green flags in a partner in your opinion?

For me: good critical thinking skills, empathy, in touch with their emotions and loves reading books.

linearchaos, in What are some green flags in a partner in your opinion?
@linearchaos@lemmy.world avatar

Compatibility:

  • Political Leaning
  • Individuals Rights
  • Children
  • truthfulness/openness

If any of those don’t look solid green to you out of the gate, it’s an absolute no-go. They don’t have to be one way or another, but if you can’t openly and comfortably agree on those things, you’re pretty screwed eventually.
