This To That tells you what type of adhesive to use to glue different materials together. It’s handy for Halloween when suddenly you need to figure out how to attach vinyl to styrofoam or something (hot glue)
I agree it would be better if the site included brands from other countries too, but it can still be used as a starting point. I’m sure you could Google the item and figure out the equivalent where you’re from.
Sabine Hossenfelder, used to love her takes on physics until she fell in the usual expert’s trap of believing she can talk equally usefully about things OUTSIDE her expertise.
First trans care, which missed a few important nuances. Then autism, which had a decades-old perspective and was at best “not informative”.
Then hoo boy Capitalism where she made a huge tangled MESS confusing and conflating markets with monetary systems and credit, all apparently based off half-remembered textbooks from 1950 using long-disproven historical claims.
A lot of criticism was sent her way. None was acknowledged, or apparently taken to heart. Repeatedly.
From skillfully presenting physics with a “explain it like I’m 5” style, she’s now spouting any trending topic in a “explained by a 5 year old” style.
This, JFC so much this. The trans care thing was a serious blow to my interest in her videos. That capitalism BS. That killed it dead. Didn’t finish that video, haven’t watched since. Byeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
To be fair, I think her reputation might still be salvageable. But it would take sincere apologies, earnest corrections, and getting back in her ”lane” of experience. As a physicist she’s fine, but not so much as a physician or politician.
On that topic, Anton Petrov is legit. Daily videos on math, physics, and cosmology. Less frequent but better produced, Sixty Symbols is one of Brady Haran’s channels at University of Nottingham.
She’s always been a weird nerdy lady, but endearing. Her videos were never professional, a bit tacky, but very informative. But I too dropped her channel because she started talking about nonsense she had no business giving opinions about.
Took away Admin rights, so everytime you wanted to install something or do something in general that requires higher privileges, we had to file a ticket in the helpdesk to get 10 minutes of Admin rights.
The review of your request took sometimes up 3 days. Fun times for a software developer.
Oh shit, you just reminded me of the time that I had to PHONE Macromedia to manually activate software because of the firewalling. This was after waiting days to get administrative permission to install it in the first place.
“Thank you” for helping resurface those horrible memories!
We worked around this at my old job by getting VirtualBox installed on our PCs and just running CentOS or Ubuntu VMs to develop in. Developing on windows sucks unless you’re doing .NET imo.
Developing on VMs also sucks, neverending network issues on platforms like Windows which have a shitty networking stack (try forwarding ports or using VPN connections).
In fact, Windows is just a shitty dev platform in general for non-Microsoft technologies but I get that you needed to go for the least shit option
Yeah fortunately we didn’t need to do any port forwarding or anything complex for networking for developing locally. It was definitely much easier for us. I don’t like Apple, but I didn’t mind my other old job that gave us MacBooks honestly.
I submitted a ticket that fell into a black hole. I have long since found an alternate solution, but am now keeping the ticket open for the sick fascination of seeing how long it takes to get a response. 47 days and counting…
Any ticketing system set up like that is just begging for abuse. If they don’t have queue managers then the team should share the hit if they just leave the ticket untouched
I still call Meta Facebook and alphabet Google… No one is confused, it’s only ambiguous if you start getting into logistics about business units
Twitter didn’t even reorganize, they just changed their name to something it feels dumb to say. It’s actually less ambiguous to call it Twitter, because X is a confusing trademark
Headphone jack, bigger batteries, front facing speakers, SD card slot, IR blaster, magnetic field to let you use your credit cards at check out from your phone (MST) - THROUGH THE ACTUAL CARD READER SO THEY DIDN’T NEED GOOGLE/APPLE/SAMSUNG WALLET WHATEVER THE FUCK. I also agree that I miss the light too lol
That said, here’s what I can’t stand in newer phones: camera bumps. Unless you’re a droid x or Nexus get that rocking on any flat service while I’m trying to type shit outta here. I don’t give a shit about my cameras but if they need to be that fat and advanced, just make the rest of the phone that fat and give me the extra battery instead of making a tiny stovetop in the corner. Fuckin weird and dumb. Also camera cutouts in the screen, put that shit under the screen or set it next to a front facing speaker on the bezel. Also bezel-less phones, I know we’re trying to fill our phones with screens but my fat palms don’t care about that when I’m accidentally touching everything on the side while holding it
It was MST, I know some Samsung phones had them, and it was used at credit card checkouts for stores that don’t have the nft/tap to pay. As far as I know it literally spoofed the magnetic field your credit card makes, so the credit card reader would think you swiped it. Super handy at stores that aren’t caught up with the tech when you didn’t have your wallet lol
I was going to mention the IR blaster. I had one on my LG G4 & G5 if I remember correctly. It was so cool! I was so bummed when they stopped having it.
Some phones still have em, most Xiaomi phones do but then you gotta put up with their software or be comfortable flashing a custom ROM.
I love having an IR blaster in my phone mostly cause my work doesn’t trust us with air conditioning remotes but also I never have to stress about finding the right remote for everything since I’ve got anything I might interact with daily that uses an IR remote programmed into my phone.
THROUGH THE ACTUAL CARD READER SO THEY DIDN’T NEED GOOGLE/APPLE/SAMSUNG WALLET WHATEVER THE FUCK
That’s not an issue, I’m assuming you mean the establishment didn’t need it, but just to cover my bases I’ll give you both scenarios:
either you’re talking about your phone needing an app, which was still the case for the magnetic card thing, but I doubt you were talking about this.
or more likely, you are talking about the place you’re paying needing a new PoS for receiving NFC based payment. In this case the issue is from the retailers trying to get another cut of the money by making you go through their app, when they can receive that payment via tap to pay which is also a thing on new cards, I have used them both in my country without any issue because we don’t have those ass backwards retailers, there’s an issue of the person taking payment being unaware and trying to enable another mobile based payment method instead of just setting it to card based payment.
I’m talking about MST, which was actual hardware on the phone used in conjunction with software to fool card readers into thinking you swiped the actual card, even if they didn’t support nft. It was super handy and easy for the shops that haven’t upgraded yet.
I know, but that’s not really an app issue, that would be equivalent to complaining about cards without magnetic strip which only rely on NFC. It’s a result of new technology and not some bad idea trying to do things in a different way. It’s like complaining about touch screen tech because you can’t do things the exact way you used to on flip phones.
That’s like saying it’s ok that they removed the headphone jack because Bluetooth is newer technology? And I know it’s not an app issue, I was complaining about a hardware removal? I’m so confused after this comment lol
The magnetic thing was only ever a Samsung thing and it wasn’t as secure as NFC, NFC works basically the same as the thing you’re talking about, its only flaw would be that it doesn’t work with the old style card readers.
I never claimed otherwise? OP asked what a nifty feature on old gadgets was that’s not on newer gadgets, and I said that. That’s an old feature that’s not on newer gadgets, and it was very handy at the time because very few stores had adopted tap to pay. Would it be AS handy today? Certainly not, but there have still been times I’ve missed it when a store doesn’t have tap to pay.
Yes it’s outdated. Isn’t that the whole point of everything in this thread??? I just keep getting more confused lol
Edit: to clarify, the phone I had had BOTH MST and NFC. NFC had actually already been around and MST was the new thing at the time. It was simply a cool additional feature.
I suspect that the magnetic feature you desire is pretty unique to the usa. Anywhere else I’ve been in the world was chip or tap. Swiping the card would throw an error to use the chip only. So that country is just really far behind.
I was so frustrated when we switched to chip cards in the US, but did chip and signature, instead of chip and PIN like the rest of the world. WHY WHY WHY!?
The US was actually one of the first places the feature was removed, because (according to Samsung) there’s not really a need for it anymore since so many places adopted tap to pay so early. So we are actually just too far ahead in that regard for my taste lol. It’s also probably good to note that I haven’t seen this feature since the S20. (Also I definitely think Samsung exaggerated that and it was just cheaper to get rid of).
Still a very handy feature that I miss, there’s ALWAYS places you go that are still behind tech-wise XD
100% of this. It’s not just that I don’t need the screen space, it’s that my hands are not capable of holding my s22 without touching the screen because they had the fucking stupid idea to wrap the screen around the sides. I’m convinced the engineers at samsung are running an experiment to see how fucking stupid their phones can get without losing sales.
My current phone has all the things you listed except MST (never heard of that before though), and I bought it specifically for those reasons. Made by Xiaomi who still seems to want to give users features for some reason. Unlocked, rooted, custom rom, the whole shebang, I’m very happy with it.
It does still have a small front camera hole and a big back camera bump, but I don’t mind those personally. Though I do wish the camera bump wasn’t off centre. And like someone mentioned, I do wish it had an indicator led somewhere.
My personal pet peeve is pre-installed, un-removable software and apps. My current mobile phone for example has apps that link to twitter, facebook, amazon etc. none of which I will ever use, but you can somehow not delete them. Why do I need to have that virtual junk in my phone?
Honestly this irks me to no end. We now have thousand dollar phones with all the speed, Ai capabilities, design, cameras, speakers, etc. Everything you could’ve wanted at its best in terms of performance, picture and camera quality, AI features… Except now you’re missing headphone jacks, replaceable batteries, Ir blasters, SD cards, extra Sim slots… Like, really, a thousand dollars for a phone and it has less features than a 200 dollar phone? Less features than phones from 6 years ago? Why the fuck have we sacrificed so much?? We had the chance to have a long golden era of long lasting, everything capable phones, but instead we’re stuck with boring bricks that do less than before, last less due to batteries wearing out, and come bloated with shit that you don’t need and can’t remove.
We seriously need some phone company out there to spec the fuck out of a high end phone with all these features, AND which meets GrapheneOS requirements and lets us flash the phone with whatever the fuck we want. We’ve gone completely backwards on phones, and it’s becoming more and more pointless to upgrade, you’re just changing phones for the batteries these days.
Well I haven’t owned one since college, but I was a cell phone salesman, so I loved it too. And I’m glad I already knew about that and used a comma as punctuation after “lol,” but thanks for the info I guess? Fair warning, this is the Internet, and you might run into more people like me :o
If you don’t have a lot of money, you could try masturbating every hour until midnight. Conversely, if you do have a lot of money, you could also try doing that.
She was underweight before because she hardly ate anything. She’s way better now. But some people comment on her change of weight because they compare it to how she was before.
It´s a trap. She seems to suffer from an eating disorder, so if you directly respond to the statement, you can only lose. No matter what you say she will find a way to turn it around. Instead ignore the “I am fat” part and immediately steer away from the topic. Try something like:
I’m sorry, it looks like this is freaking you out. You know it’s not useful to talk about it, right? So, let’s do something to change the mood. Shall we (insert activity you both enjoy) instead?
‘Tell your gf to just ignore it and not talk about being upset to you’ is a great way to ruin a relationship. A woman being upset is not a trap, and viewing relationships as adversarial is setting yourself up for failure.
ETA: This guy can’t stop editing comments to try to make it look like he had less of a meltdown than he did.
You (and the others who downvoted my comment) are completely missing the main point here, which is that the gf is obviously showing behavioural patterns connected to a form of eating disorder, like Anorexia and/or Bulimia.
A woman being upset is not a trap
Of course not. However, a conversation about “being fat”, with a person who suffers from an eating disorder is definitely a trap, as long as you are not a specialized therapist.
viewing relationships as adversarial is setting yourself up for failure
I view eating disorders as adversarial, not relationships. Please stop projecting your incorrect assumptions on me.
‘Just don’t think about it’ is a pretty terrible way to deal with eating disorders as well. Which this might not even be the case, as there are plenty of other things that manifest in a lack of appetite, not all of which are even mental illnesses.
Why are you ignoring the fact that OP said “She was underweight before because she hardly ate anything”? Seems like you are not arguing in good faith. I am done talking to you because you seem either naive, or even worse, pro-Anorexia/Bulimia.
You are inventing a reason for not eating anything when OP said nothing about that, and ignored me pointing out multiple things can cause people to lose appetite. Thanks for not subjecting me to any more of the same, at least!
By the way, people can tell you edited your comment to try to sneakily call me pro-anorexia after I made my comment.
I made up nothing. I simply quoted OP and everyone can see that. You on the other hand are clearly not arguing in good faith and I don´t have time for that. Blocked to prevent further animosities.
I don’t think you have any experience with eating disorders or women in general. Someone who used to be skinny gaining a bit of weight and feeling fat is not “behavioral patterns connected to anorexia/ bulimia”. And even if it was, how does “this is clearly freaking you out, let’s ignore it and do this instead” supposed to help?
I’ll assume you have the best of intentions in mind, if that’s the case you really shouldn’t be giving advice here because everything you’ve said so far is harmful.
I don’t think you have any experience with eating disorders or women in general.
That is nothing more than your assumption and you assume wrong. I will not tell you details about my private life, because it´s not your concern, just this much. I have several years of painful first hand experience of living with a women who suffers from severe eating disorders, so I intuitively recognize certain patters the moment I see them.
Someone who used to be skinny gaining a bit of weight and feeling fat is not “behavioural patterns connected to anorexia/ bulimia”.
That is not what OP described though. You are diminishing the facts. OP wrote:
She was underweight before because she hardly ate anything. She’s way better now.
So let´s believe OP and consider that she was not just skinny but in fact underweight, which is a very important and significant difference when talking about eating disorders. Furthermore, consider that the reason OP states for her being underweight before is that she used to “hardly eat anything” which clearly points to anorexia. Now combine being underweight and hardly eating anything earlier, with the fact that not being underweight anymore makes her feel “fat”, which points to distorted self perception and misguided body awareness.
And even if it was, how does “this is clearly freaking you out, let’s ignore it and do this instead” supposed to help?
By avoiding a discussion that will only do harm to someone with an eating disorder, independently of what you say to her. Did you ever have a discussion like that with someone who suffers from an eating disorder? I had them hundreds of times. There where in fact phases when I had such discussions on a daily basis and trust me, you can only loose there. Btw, I did not come up with that sentence myself. It´s from a website that gives professional tips about how to deal with people who suffer from eating disorders. I wish I would have known about it back then, when I would have needed it. Instead I fell into the trap over and over again and I wanted to help OP to not make that mistake.
I’ll assume you have the best of intentions in mind
You assume correctly.
if that’s the case you really shouldn’t be giving advice here because everything you’ve said so far is harmful.
I honestly do not understand how, because my intention was the exact opposite of doing harm. Please elaborate.
It doesn’t matter if your intention was the opposite of doing harm. Your advice was not good advice. Your experience with someone who had an eating disorder doesn’t give you the ability to intuitively diagnose everyone that reminds you of their situation as having the same disorder.
You’re making huge assumptions based on little information. Saying people are underweight or hardly eat anything doesn’t even come close to automatically meaning “eating disorder”. I’m underweight myself and eat very little, I’m not anorexic. If I feel chubby after a few days of binge eating, someone trying to make me stop thinking about it by distracting me like a dog isn’t going to help.
Again, I’m assuming your goal is to help so I’m not trying to be rude, but your advice is both making the issue out to be much larger than it probably is (saying she is anorexic/ bulimic while OP never used these words) while simultaneously suggesting he ignore the problem by distracting her. Even if she does have an eating disorder, as others have pointed out, saying things are “a trap” is not a healthy way to look at it, as someone reaching out for help is not doing so to put you in a bad position.
I’m underweight myself and eat very little (…) I feel chubby after a few days of binge eating
I see, so you are probably affected by an eating disorder yourself and therefore biased. That explains your stance on the topic.
your advice is (…) making the issue out to be much larger than it probably is. (…) OP never used these words
OP sounds inexperienced and probably is confronted with this kind of disorder for the first time. So naturally OP describes it without using certain vocabulary and therefore wrote: “She gained some weight but she is not fat at all!” and “She was underweight before, because she hardly ate anything”.
simultaneously suggesting he ignore the problem
So you agree there is a problem? I never suggested to ignore the problem. I only suggested to not join in on the topic of “I am fat”, brought up by someone with a possible eating disorder. See next point for reason.
as someone reaching out for help is not doing so to put you in a bad position
Saying “I am fat” when being just above underweight, does not equal asking for help. It equals asking for confirmation of a distorted body awareness and self image.
I see, so you are probably affected by an eating disorder yourself and therefore biased. That explains your stance on the topic.
You either have no idea what you’re talking about, or you’re a troll. Most people stop diagnosing strangers over the Internet when they leave high school. I really hope nobody follows your bad, harmful advice.
Do you find it strange that your professional, sound advice is getting down voted em masse? You really think you’ve got the right take?
When she was under weight, just tell her she looks a lot healtier then she did and most importantly that you like her no matter what.
With humans it’s just like with other animals, you shouldn’t be able to see the ribs, you need to be able to feel them, just. (You can go hunt for them and tickle her to prove it ;) )
It’s not lying. Fat and overweight mean different things in this context. Fat is a pejorative word, carrying a negative connotation. Overweight is a statement of fact
The gf isn’t saying, “I’m fat,” as an acknowledgement of her weight being over the recommended bmi, she’s actually saying, “I’ve gained weight, and I feel ugly and I’m concerned you won’t be attracted to me anymore.”
Yep but instead of throwing them away in the trash can that’s across the house I toss them into the convenient clothes hamper and end up wearing them again
a forum to commiserate and share advice and coping mechanisms and so on.
Speaking for myself here, but I feel like this can make the problem worse. /r/depression is something in a similar vein. Whenever I went there, I’d always leave sadder. There’s something about reading other people’s struggles that just seemed to reinforce my own sense of hopelessness.
Also, bad advice on those kinds of forums can look extremely reasonable if your perception of the world is clouded by your problems.
I know it doesn’t work for everyone, but give therapy a shot if you haven’t already.
Like others have said, having a friend that you see regularly can help with loneliness. Doesn’t even have to be strangers. Try messaging an old friend you drifted apart from. Odds are they’d be happy to catch up.
Sorry for the unsolicited advice. I know this isn’t the type of response you asked for. I hope everything works out for you, bud.
Bang on. I’m feeling down right now (relationship that ended I’ve never recovered from years later) and no amount of chatting with people online is going to fill that gaping hole or help me patch it.
Professional help should always be approached first and foremost.
Of course, that’s not accessible for many people which is a shame and for that I have no answer, just that seeking to fill that hole with like-feeling people online is a recipe in disaster. Negativity breeds negativity.
I’ve been saying this for damn near 15 years. It’s odd that people migrated from Firefox to Chrome in the first place. Obviously not everyone who uses Chrome did that but I know quite a few people who did and are now talking about switching back. These are people who generally believe independent and open source is the best way to go too.
It’s odd that people migrated from Firefox to Chrome in the first place.
I migrated from Firefox to Chrome years and years ago when Chrome was lightning fast with a bazillion tabs open and Firefox had some memory leak that forced me to reload a couple times a day. I have since moved back and realized all my old problems are no longer a thing, but I can definitely see why some would have made the switch and never tried moving back.
From what I saw. It was more Internet Explorer to Chrome.
Back in the day Firefox wasn’t as polished as it was now. Think more Open Office than Libre Office.
All machines had IE and it sucked, crashed but was default. Then I tried Chrome and it was good. Then moved everyone to it since the alternatives weren’t as good.
Years later, chrome is still good compared to IE, but now Firefox is slightly better. For all intent and purpose it’s the same but some qol features here and there made me move.
But for everyone else they don’t want or need to move. So until it gets worse than IE they’ll stay.
Money is time. When you spend all of your time and energy focusing on working, eating, and sleeping because you’re too broke to do anything else, it doesn’t leave you with much time or energy to care about christmas.
I JUST recently found out about his Donkey Kong 64 Nightmare stream and just how much fucking money he raised for charity by torturing himself for 58 hours.
I think the immediate deaths would all be from people who need electricity to run medical devices.
Followed shortly by people who require refrigerated medication.
Followed by elderly who die from exposure to extreme, unconditioned temperatures.
and that would be in the first, oh, say… week or two.
Then, with fridges full of rotted food, your first major death wave will occur as masses of people lose their absolute goddamn minds in panic and fear and start food riots/try to rob from others/raid big industrial farms/neighborhood gardens/etc, which leads to mass deaths from starvation, exposure, exertion, desperation, and gunshot.
Which will even out after about a week or two.
Then you settle in for the slow burn. 3 months out you’ll have another, comparatively small wave of deaths from people who run out of non-refridgeration requiring medications.
Then another slow burn until manufactured canned goods run out in stores and scavanged homes until a wave of starvation.
All in all, I’d say you’d probably be over the bulk of the mass deaths after 6 months, and with a significantly reduced population… Which will be to the benefit of the survivors, since less people per mile will make farming/hunting easier, and life safer… because while raiders/thieves will always be a overarching concern and safety issue, at this point, most of the desperation should have passed along with most of the desperate.
There will also be, for at least a generation, possibly two, the lingering unspoken understanding that more people than anyone would ever care to count only survived the famines and fall by eating the long pig.
Yep. I’d have about a month and a half of insulin to use, since it lasts that long out of refrigeration. It would take a while to actually kill me probably, but yeah that would be what gets me I think.
You got it right. If you’re already in a hospital you’re screwed. Anyone on a ventilator etc. is dead in hours. Then there’s people who need special meds that require refrigeration. They’re dead in days. Depending on the season, many more are dead in weeks. Food would be an issue but there are lots of shelf stable/canned goods that could last for a bit. Scarcity would be the bigger concern.
The dead bodies themselves could also be an issue at scale.
The crazier issue in my mind are all the industrial plants, nuclear power plants, chemical processing facilities…
In any major catastrophe they are abandoned and likely the meltdown and other issues could render whole areas uninhabitable. Might be manageable in certain power loss scenarios… but anything major and sudden like if you’re country suffered a nuclear attack or a major natural catastrophe and you survived I’d stay away from nuclear plants or chemical processing facilities. Potable water will be hard enough to come by…
To be fair most people in a first world country don’t need to think about water since it’s just “there”, all the time.
But as soon as the electricity goes out the water supply goes out too.
No water supply means no water to drink, with no water the human body die within 3 days, so people will start to rely on any dirty water they can find.
About dirty water, no water also means no WC. I repeat: no WC so no evacuation of feces and urine. Within a few day a big city swill be covered with human excrement. Mixed with no clean water access it means that deadly waterborne diseases will spread extremely quickly.
I wonder about the population using non-refrigerated but still vital medication being “comparatively small.” There are countless people who would no longer be getting things they need to live, and only a very small percentage of those folks would have the ability to grow a plant or something and refine themselves a substitute of some kind. I am really curious how those numbers would line up.
