What amazes me is that we pretty much are converting, just very slowly, one thing at a time. In school we all learn the metric system, and it’s used all over in industry and government. At the supermarket, everything is labeled in both systems, and some things have started trending towards metric as the default. We are all used to the 2L bottle size. The old fifth of a gallon bottle, though some still call it that, has been replaced by the 750ml bottle. More recently the 20oz bottle has been phased into the .5L, mainly–I’m sure–to shrink the amount while keeping prices the same, but still it’s progress in this regard.
I think the transformation will be effectively complete when highway signs use kilometers. But I don’t see that happening any time soon.
I’d argue this is different from a centaur. Since horses have four legs and humans have two, the womanoman’s graft would need to be towards the posterior of the forward woman, instead of above the hips like where the upper part of a centaur’s graft would be. Two sets of human legs indicates there should probably be two sets of… erm… equipment.
That’s a good question… I think for this to work properly, the digestive tract can’t just stop in the middle, they’ve got to be plumbed together into series. That means the first one would have to be disconnected, so if it was left in, it wouldn’t be functional in its typical evolutionary context.
Sure but why add to the problem? Why not carve out your own little slice and help the situation? Probably not going to hurt anything if you stop using pesticides and feed the bees where you can.
It’s not adding to the problem. As long as farmers are using fuck tons of pesticides and insecticides every day it doesn’t matter what you do to your lawn.
Either way insects are going to die.
You guys love slinging shit but you have no clue where to sling it.
It’s not just one thing. Most of those things on their own won’t even kill them. For example, Varroa mites will kill an already weakened hive, but not a healthy one.
Lawns absolutely contribute to poor nutrition, due to habitat loss. Same with all the mowed grass we have everywhere in suburbia. Monocropped agriculture does as well, because bees do best with a variety of flowers.
I’ve let the back part of my property grow wild the past couple years, and it’s currently filled with a ton of goldenrod, chicory, and a bunch of other random flowers. You would not beleive the number of honeybees I’ve seen back there at once, or how loud the buzz was.
Similarly, there’s a reason I see a ton of fireflys in my yard, but I see almost none in my neighbors yards. It’s because they’re well- manicured green wastelands
Tbf, military grade just means the minimum viable quality for military gear to work. It isn’t super strong or quality material. It’s a buzz word that sounds good but is actually quite shit lol
When reporters asked (Alan) Shepard what he thought about as he sat atop the Redstone rocket, waiting for liftoff, he had replied, ‘The fact that every part of this ship was built by the lowest bidder.’
There was a war movie and in one scene they were handing out gear to the troops and one guy was like “Is there anything good?” or something along those lines and someone responded “It’s from the Army, NOPE!” And to this day whenever I think about it I chuckle a bit.
I’ve known a guy making predictions using astrology. Then his predictions completely missed COVID, only one of the biggest disruptions in our lives, and never talked about astrology again.
Astrology is so complex, there’s always a way to give yourself an out. “Oh, I see why that one was wrong! I forgot to factor in the Perseid meteor shower.”
I decided to fact check. As far as I can tell, the initial stories were all based off of rumour and supposition, amplified by twitter (Elon specifically). I do see stories about the fallout, including a 100M defamation lawsuit. On the balance of probabilities, my factcheck concludes that it is likely a fabricated story.
I wouldnt say it was exactly like that. I was there when it was written. It was heavily pushed by a certain annoying subreddit after the initial cheating allegations because it was a funny story and shitstorming it was the funniest thing ever. Only then it has reached main chess subreddit, though that some grandmasters, through them other grandmasters and through them it reached the media. Just somewhere along the line someone missed that it was supposed to be a joke
Mythbusters actually debunked the myth that you can jump at the right time and survive a falling elevator. Short clip for anyone interested: youtu.be/xmloyCC7MOY?si=DbmDkS4w1hyQ3OcZ
Yup. The best strategy is to lie down and spread out, with your hands under your head. The bigger the contact area between your body and the floor, the better. But good luck doing that while falling.
Edit: looked it up, apparently it’s just two for horses, though not sure if the human set would count or if she’d have two up top and two on the underside.
