grayman,

The best Chinese I had in my town was shut down as it was involved in drug smuggling, money laundering, and human trafficking. The food was so good that dignitaries and Hollywood actors would eat there when passing through town. The owner had photos of himself with 2 presidents (old bush and Clinton) and quite a few actors, along with a bunch of other rich people and stuff.

I need to fly from NJ to California in a few months. Economy tickets are around $275. I’d like a bit of extra legroom for the long flight, so I check out Economy plus. Economy plus tickets are $800. What in the actual fuck is this? It’s not first class. I get no added benefits other than a few inches of extra leg room.

ikidd,
@ikidd@lemmy.world avatar

Buy 2 seats, 1 behind the other, for $550 then walk in there with a toolbox and yeet that seat out through the emergency door onto the tarmac. You get more than a few inches and it only cost twice as much.

dustyData, in Reality is becoming a George Carlin bit

Not having the death penalty would definitely be infinitely better. But given the different ways of humane execution, this is actually an improvement over lethal injections. Unlike injected chemicals, it’s way harder to fumble and accidentally cause extra unnecessary suffering.

TargaryenTKE,

I fully agree with everything you said but I’m going to use your comment as a jumping off point anyway: I have to wonder, would the condemned feel like they’re suffocating as it’s happening due to lack of oxygen? Or would they simply not notice and just kinda fade out of consciousness?

Mr_Fish,

When you’re suffocating, you don’t really notice that you don’t have enough oxygen. You just feel that you have too much CO2. So if you’re in a nitrogen chamber or in low enough pressure air, you don’t notice you’re suffocating. You just fall asleep.

cactusupyourbutt,

fun fact: the brathing reflex is caused by excess co2 and not a lack of oxygen. thats why people regularely suffocate by going into enclosed spaces which are oxygen deprived

XeroxCool,

Smarter Every Day did a video on oxygen depletion. You get loopy. As the other comment said, that burning feeling is from high CO2, not low O2. Put your mask on first, then help others.

youtu.be/kUfF2MTnqAw?si=THihWZJ-mw1Qk3VN

Son_of_dad,

At what point do we admit that it’s more humane to just shoot someone in the brain? If you’re gonna have a death penalty, it should be dirty and fucked up. Making death penalty too neat and clean, just encourages the states to keep it around. Make the state feel that decision…

dustyData, (edited )

People used to botch that one all the time. Not everyone shot in the head dies. And now you have a gory mess that’s gurgling and trying to scream but keeps breathing and moving for several days. So humane.

And that’s not even considering the ethical issues of who pulls the trigger.

Randelung, (edited )

That’s why multiple people shoot and you can just shoot twice if it’s not deadly enough? Why would you let them survive - for several days no less. Two or three shots in the head are quicker than anything they do so far.

dustyData,

Are you just very cruel and sadistic or are you just ignorant of the history and reality of firing squads? Genuine question.

Son_of_dad,

That’s my point, none of it is humane. And you can shoot a person more than once to make sure they’re dead, and like I said, the ethics of shooting someone in the head is not different than the ethics of injecting poison into someone, they’re both fucked up things to do, no matter how clean you pretend it is

dustyData, (edited )

It definitely didn’t come across like that’s your point, but I see it now. But no, shooting someone in the head or killing any human being in any way will ever be humane (caveat for assisted suicide in euthanasia, but that’s a different can of worms than the death penalty). How humane a given procedure to kill a person is can only be assessed in relative terms with one another. And in that comparison, nitrogen chambers are definitely way less painful and suffering inducing for the victim, as well as, arguably, ethically more acceptable for the people who technically have to set up the process and push the button. But I doubt this would sway legislation one way or the other, as the political discussions rarely touch on how humane the method is.

pH3ra,
@pH3ra@lemmy.ml avatar

I totally get your point and the reasons you say that.
On the other side I find ridiculous the struggle to “find a better way to do it” instead of just getting rid of the whole death sentence alltogether.

The best way of doing it is not doing it.

UnverifiedAPK, (edited )

This is probably the best form of execution possible. Your body doesn’t know that there’s a lack of oxygen, but it does notice a build up of carbon dioxide. Nitrogen poisoning is not noticable until you’re already “drunk” and falling asleep. That’s why it’s so deadly to divers.

I consider it to be alarming because it can encourage people to choose cremation unnecessarily, just because it fits the budget. I would not take away or mock anyone’s choice to cremate if that really is their first choice…

But I think it’s upsetting for Orthodox Christians and other groups that require burial and would like to have a dignified casket at an affordable price. Just like how I sometimes feel bothered thinking about *the cost of burial plots." The idea of being fleeced of a significant part of a modest inheritance through the funerary process is really off-putting.

madcaesar,

I get your point, but organized religion LOVES to fleece people. They live for that shit! Make you feel ill and sick and then sell you the 7,500 $ cure!

Zibitee,

I mean at that point, why aren’t churches paying the funeral expenses? Can’t let a Christian corpse get desecrated! It is their Christian duty!

BobbyNevada,

What!? And ruin the bottom line!? Blasphemous!

Jayu,

I imagine that some do pay for it, while others don’t.

I’ve learned there’s a huge variety in compensation for Priests, as well. In places like Greece, where it is the state religion, Priests are government employees, I believe, and they get some fixed amount as public servants, while in much of the world it all depends on the local parish. Many priests have to continue working in the world to pay their bills.

I am not sure if there has been a case at my church where we have crowdfunded a casket but I know we have people pay something like $25 USD a year to be buried in the Church cemetery, which is an absolute steal.

Poor people here are universally cremated.

pozbo, (edited ) in alternative to trees
@pozbo@lemmy.world avatar

So I think the general idea is that you can convert more CO² to carbon in the form of sugars and O² molecules per square foot with algae than with trees. Trees would totally do the same thing if we ripped up all the concrete and buildings to replant a forest, but that process would take decades.

This can be added into existing infrastructure and helps I guess. Kinda a neat concept.

    subtext, (edited )

    Pedantic, but for carbon dioxide or oxygen (or most other molecules you’ll write out) it’s a subscript for the number. Wikipedia

    So it would be CO2~ or H2O or O~2~~

    Seems my markdown is rusty, however you make subscripts I guess for CO2

    Ottomateeverything,

    But why not just like… Do that somewhere where the mass actually makes a difference? You’d be better off dumping acres full of this shit instead of regrowing a forest. Doing it in individual tanks, sparsely within a city, is both an inefficient use of resources and fucking ugly.

    Trees only purpose in a city is not to clean out CO2. It’s not even their primary purpose in a city. If it was, they’d be selecting specific species etc.

    pozbo,
    @pozbo@lemmy.world avatar

    I mean ideally we would flood the ocean with Fe³ and spark a mass breed of this shit where it belongs. The biomass could work it’s way up the food chain as an added benefit too.

    But we won’t 🙃

    FierySpectre,

    If history taught us anything it is that purposely messing with an ecosystem seldom has the effect we want to achieve.

    pozbo,
    @pozbo@lemmy.world avatar

    Better to leave it with just the environmental changes we made without intent right?

    Ottomateeverything,

    I mean, sort of?

    We created a big problem by injecting a lot of shit where it shouldn’t be. If we stop that, some pieces will bounce back.

    Injecting more shit in another place means we have one big problem, that we haven’t stopped, and now a new problem that we don’t know the repurcussions of or how to reverse.

    So uh, yeah, I’ll stick with the one beast we know over one we know and also another we don’t.
