I hate Facebook but I’m so rooting for Zuckerberg

ohitsbreadley,

I kinda wish these schmucks would spend their billions on Mechas and battle it out anime style.

It’s an entirely pointless undertaking, but think about it - it would be an outlet for their sociopathic and narcissistic need to win; it would keep them relevant in headlines as they desire, yet far enough away from the political sphere; the news media gets their headlines; the people would get both work and entertainment out of it.

CeruleanRuin,

Right? Like he’s definitely evil, but at least he’s not a fucking shitgoblin constantly flinging his feces around in public.

inconel, in Japan is on its own wavelength.

Reiwa era enters the chat

Most of Japanese hates the arbitary currender year resetting at each new emperor enthronrment. The conversion is ass and no one knows when it changes (bound to emperor’s health) . Worst is its official year that govmt body accepts.

nuzkie,

What do you mean you can’t translate instantly between era year and Gregorian year?

inconel, (edited )

You are likely to only refer more than current era. If you’re writing govmet grant application, renewing licence or certificate, chances are you mention events hapenned in previous era. You look up table for when the previous era started and ended, which era said year falls into, then convert for each year, each era. Extra minutes wasted every time instead of simply writing in Gregorian year.

Blackmist, in Seriously spends $80 to drive 20km..

One of the bosses at my work has a massive Fall Guy truck, and often has huge items delivered to work, just so he has an excuse to use it.

“You won’t get that in the back of a Fiesta”

That’s right dickhead, because we’d have the items delivered to our homes.

Pulptastic,

You’d be surprised what I fit in my Yaris hatchback

FlyingSquid,

My Prius holds a surprising amount with the back seats down.

jasondj,

For real I had a 2003 Hyundai Tiburon a while back. Went to a tool consignment store. Saw a full sized tablesaw with stand. Owner told me he’d give me $25 off if I could fit the whole thing in my Tiburon…and I did. And it wasn’t even hard.

Vespair,

Fr; I have a tiny CRZ coupe, but when I fold the back buckets down I can fit a tremendous amount of stuff in my car, even awkward and unwieldy-shaped things

Rodeo,

time_fo_that,

I fold the seats down in my 12 year old BMW and have moved twice with that car! I even fit my mountain bike in the back many times (until I got a hitch rack because it was annoying lol).

scrubbles,

Or, and hear me out, I can rent a truck for the one time a year I need one. 20 bucks for a few hours from uhaul vs… 20,000 more for a big truck over a commuter car.

madcaesar,

20k just for the cost of the vehicle, probably MORE, plus extra insurance, gas tax cost all to save 50$ once in a while on a truck rental.

Not to mention that a pickup is basically half a completely useless car. You can’t sit in the back, you can’t really use it for hauling delicate stuff… It’s just such a bizzare concept for non farmers.

HipHoboHarold, (edited )

That’s what I keep thinking about. Like sometimes I would love an older, smaller styled truck. It could be really useful, but it sucks they aren’t really an option anymore.

But then I think about it, and how often would I use it? I just bought a TV and had to have it delivered because it wouldn’t fit in our car. We recently moved, and it would have been great.

But other than that, I honestly can’t think of any time recently I’ve needed it.

UnfortunateDoorHinge,

If practical a trailer is a good option. Get a tow hitch and just rent a trailer when you need. Moved house with my Suzuki and a 6x4 enclosed trailer.

Rubanski,

But remove the tow hitch before reselling the car because the buyer might try to argue extended wear on your car through towing stuff

vierbl00m,

but wouldn’t the buyer be right? why mislead them?

Rubanski,

It absolutely depends on how often you use it. But if you leave it, I can almost guarantee that you will get a lower price for it, even if you only used it once. I agree that, if you are using it regularly, you need to be honest about it

time_fo_that,

I have a hitch exclusively for a bike rack, could just say that.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

I’ve thought that too. If they made a tiny truck, like an old style 90s ranger or tacoma but as an EV? I’d buy that tomorrow. Literally tomorrow I’d go buy it. But of course they don’t, they’re all these monstrously sized bohemoths that I have no interest in driving.

Until they make my dream tiny truck I’ll just go rent one.

UnfortunateDoorHinge,

In Asia they sell thousands of those Japanese and Korean mini trucks and vans, but they are designed for roads 80kmh and below. In Australia we have the Hilux 2wd utes which are small and bare bones. But for every one of those, Toyota sell 20 HiAce vans.

Chakravanti,

Yeah, why not go for anything 90’s? Or do you want a stupid driving smart truck?

HipHoboHarold,

The Ranger was actually the one I was picturing. One of my friends in high school had one, and we all thought it was so cool. This was in a small town in Texas, so we could all ride in the back, which looking back… yeah, not the best idea. I’ve heard stories of people getting hurt. So I wouldn’t do it anymore. But it was always just a cool truck and I was always a little jealous of her.

Without knowing the context of what drove OP to make this meme, my guess is they have some high and mighty idea for some sort of standard and someone else pointed out the XKCD comic is the most likely result.

Masimatutu, (edited )
@Masimatutu@mander.xyz avatar

Found it on Mastodon, I don’t know if it’s the original source. The XKCD does have a good point, of course. But I mean, if we’d all think like that, no good standards would ever develop, so people shouln’t cite it as a fundamental truth everywhere and avoid all meaningful discussion.

Robaque, (edited )

Yeah it is worth looking into why certain new “standards” get adoped and others don’t.

Standards don’t ever get designed just to be the new universal standard, right? There’s gotta be some kind of improvement in mind, whether iterating on previous designs or otherwise. I’d say that in many cases the improvement is the focus for the developer, not the delusion of creating the next big “standard”.

It’s better for “standards” to develop naturally as happens in FOSS rather than for them to be imposed by authorities that will resist changing them once they become outdated, or companies that don’t care either way and will follow the profit of least resistance.

TheOSC,

Plenty of standards are created with the express purpose of being a standard and selling the license for that standard to large companies. USB, HDMI, BlueRay, CD, Bluetooth, etc. all of these are standards designed as standards.

Robaque,

Which is why they often suck, no? Took years for USB to really find its footing, and now with all the EU legislation setting USB-C I feel like it’s gonna become frustratingly outdated eventually.

I promise you the amount I save on my payment + gas is far more than the amount it costs me to rent a truck the very, very rare occasions I need one. The same goes for the vast majority of American suburbanites.

squiblet,
@squiblet@kbin.social avatar

That doesn't make it a sane choice for day-to-day transportation. If you can afford to have a regular car and a truck on the side for utility, great. Otherwise, why drive this giant polluting POS, which are usually rather expensive to purchase as well as to operate? Trucks aren't that comfortable to drive imo... hard to see in front of you, stop poorly, turn poorly, difficult to park. When you need to move furniture or whatever you can rent one for a day for $40.
