I think it more likely that they are sick of the idiot love triangle crutch which so many productions desperately wedge into films it has no place in.

Talaraine, in Rogue ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ Intermissions at Movie Theaters Spur Studio to Intervene
@Talaraine@kbin.social avatar

“People say it’s three hours, but come on, you can sit in front of the TV and watch something for five hours,” Scorsese said. “Also, there are many people who watch theatre for three and a half hours. There are real actors on stage — you can’t get up and walk around. You give it that respect; give cinema some respect.”

When we watch something for 5 hours we pause and get up whenever the hell we feel like it, and if everyone wants to stop, we do.

Theatre has intermissions. The reason? So people getting up to use the bathroom aren't consistently ruining the experience for everyone else.

There are no actors on stage in a movie theatre, so they don't give a flying f.

Is Scorsese just old or is he purposefully being an ass?

He emphasized his hope that viewers experience Killers of the Flower Moon on the big screen

You just hurt your chances, big shot.

Theharpyeagle,

I also found that line hilarious. Like yeah plays may run longer, maybe into the 4 hour range, but they have intermissions with well-known signals when it’s time for people to return to their seats.

And, of course, old movies had intermissions, too. Has he never heard the “Let’s all go to the lobby!” jingle?

IphtashuFitz,

Hell, I’ve seen two plays that were so long they were broken into two parts. One of them I saw parts 1 & 2 on separate days. The other was a matinee followed by an evening performance.

So a roughly 4 to 5 hour play had 3 breaks. Each part had an intermission, and then there’s the longer break between the two parts.

Theharpyeagle,

Honestly that sounds like a great time. Make a day of it, grab a bite to eat and talk about what you think will happen next. Sounds lovely.

gmtom, in Seems we've already got the plot for Barbie II

As someone that never saw the movie. All the clips, gifs and memes people make about it are the Ken scenes. Nobody talks about barbie presumably because her character and performance were good, but just kinda safe, middle of the road stuff.

kilgore_trout,

Yes.

S_H_K, (edited )

I saw a few memes from her but her acting wasn’t middle of the road by any means. She had to do the more dramatic parts and Ryan did almost all the comedy. And we all know comedy does give more material for memeing.

Also I noticed her memes were showing in my wife’s feed so I assume there’s some echo chamber effect going on.

MargotRobbie, in Gen Z is turned off by onscreen sex, wants no-mance over romance, a new study finds
@MargotRobbie@lemmy.world avatar

I feel that the title of the article is misleading, as the poll in the article shows that Gen Z are turned off by gratuitous sex scenes that are not relevant to the plot, and not Gen Z suddenly turning into evangelical prudes. What they wanted is not the unrealistic, lazy, paint-by-number relationships as commonly depicted to stir controversy to drive engagement(a very cynical approach, I might add), but a full spectrum of different types of relationships good and bad, authentic in their depiction and sincere in their on-screen expression.

Note that the sincerity of expression doesn’t mean that the relationship depicted has to be good, or even genuine. For example, the sex scenes in “The Wolf of Wall Street” (you’re welcome, by the way) are important because they highlight that between Jordan and Naomi, there is nothing between the two besides money and sex, it’s shallow, materialistic, two selfish, toxic people using the other to get what they want, without which they can’t stand each other, in stark contrast with the genuine parental love that Naomi felt for her children, and it is the resolution of said contradiction which contributed to Jordan Belfort’s downfall.

I don’t mind sex scenes but I’m so over forced, low stakes, softcore sex scenes between characters that have nonexistent chemistry.

I still think it’s best when it’s artfully implied and brief between characters with chemistry.

Either way, very sad indeed

Norodix, (edited ) in Box Office: ‘The Marvels’ Gets Grounded With MCU’s Second-Lowest Opening Day Ever

I think the first captain marvel was horrible. I think that plays a huge part.

Zorque,

You not liking the first movie means other people didn't go? Who are you to have such an enormous effect on the cinema going audience...

Norodix,

Wow. That is a silly thing to be pedantic about.

Zorque,

I do not think that word means what you think k it means.

JowlesMcGee,
@JowlesMcGee@kbin.social avatar

I think the inference to take from their comment is that by extension others probably didn't like it either, and so there is less excitement for a sequel to a movie that wasn't as well received.

Zorque,

Right, they're inferring that their opinion was universal. There was a lot of controversy @urrounding the movie, but it had little to do with the quality and a lot to do with peoples inability to remove personal biases from their viewing experience.

I thought the 1st Captain Marvel was pretty fun. I don’t have much of an interest in seeing this though.

Pulptastic,

That NIN shirt was enough for me to be into it

Shyfer,

For what it’s worth, I think this one is more fun than the first one. Or most recent Marvel movies except for Guardians of the Galaxy 3. And I haven’t even seen Miss Marvel.

Ilovethebomb,

I struggle to think of a less likeable main character that wasn’t some sort of anti-hero. It takes talent to be that smug and condescending for an entire movie.

ParsnipWitch,

How did Captain Marvel struck you as smug in comparison to the truckload of arrogant and full-of-themselves characters in the Marvel universe? Thor, Drax, or Iron Man who is basically a narcissist.

Ilovethebomb,

They’re supposed to be like that though, especially Tony Stark, it’s part of their character arc. With Captain Marvel, it feels like she was supposed to be likeable, but it didn’t work out.

ParsnipWitch,

I try to understand what exactly made her seem “smug” to you. Especially when compared to other Marvel heroes.

Womble,

I cant speak for this in particular (I gave up watching marvel halfway through endgame), but its very different if a character comes across as smug and all the other characters are saying “God isnt he smug but we need him” and having a character that comes across as smug but all the other characters love them.

Most of them are just dumb. Like a guy finds out his mom just died in a bear attack, so he and his coworker have passionate sex for the first time.

Honytawk,

Ah, bear-grief sex.

A classic.

sagrotan,
@sagrotan@lemmy.world avatar

That’s right. If I wanna see that, there’s pornhub etc. In any other movie: skip button. One exception: “The Room”. Makes the cringe complete. Oh, never watch it sober. Of course.

Fungah,

It’s oddly the perfect Hollywood sex scene.

I mean, they try for verisimilitude. When I have sex I of course spend hours under flowing white bed sheets running my hand along my partners body and kind of grinding at them, I mean who doesn’t? But it’s always unrealistic. You never even see the dude you’re paying $5.00 an hour to undulate the sheets, not the dude holding the sheets up so you can stare lovingly into your partners eyes.
