asteriskeverything, in Seems we've already got the plot for Barbie II

Men getting credit for women’s accomplishments is the plot of barbie? I thought it was about how expectations and rules for gender identity and roles hurts everyone. That then expands on how women specifically feel a unique pressure to be an impossible ideal of everything all at once.

reddig33,

Why not both?

electrogamerman,

No, the plot is barbie not getting an oscar nomination while Ken did

MrFappy, in Rogue ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ Intermissions at Movie Theaters Spur Studio to Intervene

Scorsese can truly fuck himself if he thinks a 3.5 hour movie doesn’t require an intermission. His last was 4, but you could also pause it to piss. The man is a fucking sadist.

Anticorp,

Makes me wonder if the staff making the movie was allowed more than one bathroom break every work day.

CeruleanRuin,

FarFarAway, in Gen Z is turned off by onscreen sex, wants no-mance over romance, a new study finds

I’m not Gen Z and I hate the damn sex scenes. There was a minute there where netflix would just add one within 15 mins of every show or movie, even if they never showed another one again. It never added to the plot and seemed like it was just there to reel people in. But, it was obnoxious.

Glad they sort of stopped that, although I still find it happens now and again. Hopefully this puts the nail in the coffin.

Maybe I am a prude. So what!

NightOwl,

It’s awkward seeing scenes like that unfold with other people like friends and family. Implying a scene and fading to black is more than enough. And I think many actors would be happier too not having to act out those scenes.

roo,
@roo@lemmy.one avatar

captain_aggravated,
@captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works avatar

Hmm. I haven’t really thought about it much. Why do I, a porn enjoying man from smack in the middle of the Millennial generation, dislike so many Hollywood sex scenes?

I would be interested in gathering some data, take a large sample of movies and TV shows made during my lifetime, and rate them as to why they’re in a film. What purpose do they serve in the story, what do they tell us about the characters…why is this here?

bus_factor,

The issue for me isn’t the sex, it’s that the scene is irrelevant to the plot. If the sex is relevant to the plot I don’t mind, but when it’s obviously just slotted in to show tits, that’s annoying because it breaks immersion for me. It makes me think about the agenda behind adding that scene instead of thinking about the story I’m watching.

Obvious product placement is kind of in the same category for me. Like Will Smith in I, Robot spending 5 minutes of the movie super excited about receiving some “vintage 2004 Converse All Stars”. Like, the movie is set in 2035, but you just had to find a way to plug this year’s model of some shoes. Sure, those shoes have looked the same since forever, but the 2004 ones were just something else, man!

I mentioned this in another thread about this: How Nintendo has characters in game refer to Link and how Link is portrayed in media outside the games, it seems very much like the personality of that cartoon version is the canon personality of Link.

GregorGizeh, in Gen Z is turned off by onscreen sex, wants no-mance over romance, a new study finds

Am a millennial. Sex scenes in movies should follow a simple formula: don’t do sex scenes, or do real sex scenes.

All that softcore, sex under the sheets while wearing a bra nonsense only serves to make watching it with family a bit awkward. Either make it a movie that stands on its own, or make a movie where I can actually watch celebrity people fuck in full explicitness.

Make it porn or not, both is fine, but don’t try to appeal to both sides. That’s just awkward and frustrating to either

PeepinGoodArgs,

Desperado did it right.

buzziebee,

Here’s the twist. We show it. We show all of it.

youtu.be/Ftoffknbrfc?si=9pfHb5eV4SRbqbwV

Shah_of_Iran,

Because what’s the one major thing missing from all action movies these days, guys? Full penetration. Guys, we’re going to show full penetration, and we’re going to show a lot of it.

Dkarma,

I think you touched on it here. Back in the day ppl wanted those sex scenes. Now we have porn and don’t need them for titillation

AgentGrimstone,

Team America did it right. They went all the way and I loved it.

MajorHavoc,

It makes me happy that somewhere, someone, is reading your comment with no knowledge of the scene you’re referring to. I hope they search for it and are delighted.

Edit: And I agree 100%.

sunbeam60,

Not a millennial but broadly agree with you.

It’s also just so … base … like, ok, your characters bonk, we get it, just fade to black. When did a sex scene add anything to a story other than titillation? It’s the equivalent of serving me up another algorithmically targeted TikTok video. I feel like they’re just taking advantage of me.

So, in short, I’d be happy if they leave that shit at the door. If I was searching for porn, I’d know where to look.

Brokkr, in Rogue ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ Intermissions at Movie Theaters Spur Studio to Intervene

Honestly, I’m not sure why all movies over 2 hours don’t have them, inserted by the theater so that they can sell more popcorn and candy.

When I was a kid, I remember that Space Jam was the last movie with an intermission and the movie is not even that long.

CeruleanRuin,

As someone with a bladder over 40 yrs old now (ugh), I think intermissions ought to be mandatory in anything over 2.5 hrs.

If studios want cinema to survive (and at this point I’m not sure they do), they need to stop trying to cater exclusively to the 29-35 yr-old demo.

My parents used to go to movies often. Now they find it a daunting chore because of the online reserved seating. So they just don’t go anymore. I don’t imagine they’re alone in that.

2 hours seems normal to me, but I could definitely see it as you get closer to three.

Hateful Eight had one and that was 2 hours 55 minutes.

c0mbatbag3l, in Box Office: ‘The Marvels’ Gets Grounded With MCU’s Second-Lowest Opening Day Ever
@c0mbatbag3l@lemmy.world avatar

It’s almost like people are getting sick of the constant Marvel drip feed of content that’s been going on for years now.

dhtseany,

I remember when they had a big long-arc that was spread intelligently across all of the movies that built up to Endgame. I think they’ve forgotten this.

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.world avatar

Phase 4 lost the plot. It’s like they didn’t know what to do after Endgame.

For the plot going forward, you have to see:

Wandavision (Disney+, Blu Ray this month)
Loki Season 1 (Disney+, fresh on Blu Ray)
Spider-Man: No Way Home
Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness
Ant-Man: Quantumania
Loki Season 2 (just finished)

Lauchs,

I think you’ve put your finger on it. The shows didn’t exist prior to Endgame. Now, they’re doing the same nonsense as 90s/early 2000s Marvel where if you wanted to understand everyone in large events (which happened all the time) you really needed to read a bunch of different series.

But, watching a ten episode show is a time committment and there are so many actually worthwhile shows that one can watch…

MrBusiness,

I think the biggest problem is they keep hamfisting action and comedy where it’s completely unnecessary. If something is worth watching people will find the time.

But they keep making the same mistakes on most of their stuff, like Wandavision was pretty good up until they decided they needed a big fight scene for the climax. Quantimania, Falcon & WS, Captain Marvel were milquetoast. Then you’ve got Thor L&T and Secret Invasion which were handled badly. It was weird to get Sam Raimi back for a one-off but not branching into the supernatural side of Marvel.

superduperenigma,

Jonathan Majors has really screwed up any plans they had for the current arc.

zipzoopaboop,

True, but that doesn’t fix their quality problem. Loki wasn’t bad but everything else since endgame has been unwatchable to boring and forgettable at best.

BigilusDickilus,

Guardians 3 was really good, but they just let Gunn do his thing and it wasn’t just trying to move the general plot along. I wish they had more stuff that was just doing it’s own thing.

Sagifurius,

I just saw Guardians three the other day finally. Did it feel to you like 20 minutes was missing out of the third act? It just suddenly stopped making linear sense.

Patches,

They reached a point where they just decided to wrap this shit up. We’ve only got 10 minutes of screen time left.

Sagifurius,

Needs a directors cut. It was really jarring and Warlock made no sense

Patches,

!They were going to kill Star Lord, and test screenings showed that didn’t go well and it shows. !<

Sagifurius,

Oh. Well that explains it I guess. It just seemed so hacked up, I can’t even watch it again because I noticed the first time, 2nd time the frantic pace won’t even mitigate

BigilusDickilus,

It’s been a while since I watched it. Could you elaborate a bit?

Sagifurius,

They completely glossed over how Warlock changed sides n why, and everyone was just running and changing scenes at such a frenetic pace that poorly hid the missing connector scenes. Plus that one all out fight scene and then bang they’re somewhere else for some reason

ours,

It didn’t help you need to watch hours of TV shows and X previous movies to have a superhero movie make sense.

c0mbatbag3l,
@c0mbatbag3l@lemmy.world avatar

That’s my point, you have to turn a hobby into a chore so that you can keep up.

It’s the same reason popular game franchises have also failed. 343i messed up the Halo franchise when they started putting plot critical events and information in side media like novels and comic books. The moment you cater to the hardcore fans who have no other interests, you alienate the more common fans that enjoy it but don’t make it their entire personality.

So now if you play Halo 5 you might be confused at what happened to the Didact, you know he survived Halo 4 but where is he? Oh. Right. He got killed in a comic book. Onto the next villain! Cortana took over the AI’s? Holy shit, this is going to fill up the whole next game! Just kidding, that conflict happened off screen and now you’re fighting the banished.

Marvel is doing this with their TV shows.

echo64, in Hollywood’s Biggest Stars Offer To Kick In $150M Over Three Years In Dues To Help End Actors Strike Stalemate

This is cute, but no. The studios should be paying people what they need to continue working in the industry so that the industry is a place where people can work. And this only weakens future negotiations.

Pyr_Pressure, in Gen Z is turned off by onscreen sex, wants no-mance over romance, a new study finds

Unless you’re watching a romance movie there’s almost zero point to have a romance plotline.

Pretty tired of the horror movies and action movies that just randomly throw in some love triangle or romance plot to try and make the actual plot more exciting, even though most of the time it makes no sense.

That’s a pretty bad example, since love is the reason that the war started to begin with, making it quite essential for the plot

Doesn’t help that sex keeps being written into shows where it doesn’t belong.

It’s trying to make a show “more adult” in literally the most childish way possible.

That Halo show is a good example of completely needless sex scenes.

Every show needs a romantic subplot. Its fundamental to the marketing.

HawlSera,

All I know about the Halo show is that it ignores the entirety of the Halo lore in order to basically try to be a note for note rip off of the Mandalorian. But the fact that it has sex scenes bothers me, I mean isn’t it cannon that the Spartan project killed Master Chiefs libido and therefore he is effectively asexual?

LazyBane,

The rate at which the Spartan II augmentations killed people’s sex drive is overstated quite a bit, but yeah Chief doesn’t really show to have much of a libido (from what I’ve read, only at Ghosts of Onyx so far), and having this alternate version of Chief be so unhinged as to bang a POW really goes against canon Chief’s single minded dedication to his missions.

paddirn, in Gen Z is turned off by onscreen sex, wants no-mance over romance, a new study finds

Porn is porn, I’ll watch that when I want in private. If I’m watching a movie/tv show, I’m watching it for the content, for the storyline or whatever, adding shitty softcore porn to it just dilutes it and makes it unwatchable around friends/family. One of my gripes with Game of Thrones (not high compared to everything else wrong with it) was all the shitty sex scenes they added, which required them to cut out even more content than before. With only ~10 hours per season, they didn’t have alot of time to dick around, but they spent alot of time… dickin’ around.
