When was the mad cow prion problem in UK beef?

In the United Kingdom, from 1986 to 2015, more than 184,000 cattle were diagnosed with the peak of new cases occurring in 1993.

From en.wikipedia.org/…/Bovine_spongiform_encephalopat…

I don’t know if that affected Ireland, or whether Ireland was importing British beef, but I don’t think I’d eat that even if it smelled good, and I wouldn’t give it to my dog either

psud,

It’s about everything. Computers, phones, the computer that makes your car work. Every bit of electronics that boots - that probably includes your smoke detector and oven

psud,

All of it. Computers, phones, cable modems, cameras cars.

We need it to be open, especially for networked equipment so we can keep it secure and running after the manufacturer stops supporting it.

Landlords should NOT exist.

There is the Georgism position where rent is discouraged with tax which is set to share out society’s share of the value of limited natural resources

It’s hard to run a civilisation without landlords, since some people are not in a position to buy land and need to borrow it.

Skilled programmers can see that Linus is an expert. It works in tech. It probably works in any professional environment - anywhere where skilled people are picking someone highly skilled.

For the average person, we have clearly seen average people suck at picking expert leaders, though it works fine in small groups

That was my dad in the Navy in the '60s. The rules were you could have facial hair, but if you wanted to go from clean shaven to facial hair you needed permission and you had two weeks to grow it - if it wasn’t good enough you had to shave.

He couldn’t grow a beard in a fortnight. I can’t grow a beard in a fortnight.

So he applied right before going on leave so he would have 4 weeks of leave + 2 weeks to grow the beard, which was sufficient

psud,

These “would you rather” memes are mind poison when both sides are impossible fantasies

psud,

Back when I was 6, in 1983, my uncle who worked in the oil industry told me about global warming.

I could totally have been a real radical environmentalist, but I was 6.

A second time around that talk would have an impact, and with some foresight for the next 40 years. I think no one would be surprised if I devoted everything to fixing global warming - they might be surprised at my success in the stock market.

psud,

I live in Australia near our mountain pastures. The meat supply is a mix of local grass fed and finished beef and lamb, and grain finished beef from up north

The grass finished meat has a healthier fat balance and tastes better

I always ask butchers where my meat was raised and how it was finished as that affects the ethics and flavour. I agree with you that meat raised on grain is wasteful.

Where’s the waste in what I buy? They drink from mountain streams, they eat grass. Most of their meat goes to human food, most of the rest goes to pet food, the skin becomes leather

When I cook more meat than I can eat, the extra goes in the fridge and I eat it for the next meal

On the relevant subreddit (which hasn’t moved to Lemmy) I have heard it’s easy to get grass finished beef in the US too
