It sure does. There’s a lot of research in the study of New Media that points to the superficial nature of how we connect online. We’re sharing banal content to weak-ties constantly. It’s not real human connection. On social media we are often just staring at everyone’s highlight reel. It’s unhealthy. You should read, “Alone Together” by Sherry Turkel.
But it’s not all grim. If you read about Participatory Culture you’ll see there’s an upside to New Media technology, which is the ability to be content producers, not just consumers.
Social media often fails to connect all 7 billion of us in any real, meaningingful, human way. We’re all just really busy being alone together.
Same. I’ve seen only a few, but thankfully no one’s been a douche to me (yet? Pls don’t start lol). I’d imagine there are tons I haven’t seen yet. When people moved from reddit, it wasn’t exclusively just the good parts that came over. In my experience, though, it’s a lot less than in reddit.
almost exclusively electronic music, just can’t seem to get enough of it. (ambient, downtempo, drum & bass, dub, electro, glitch, goa trance, house, idm, psybass, psychill, psytrance, synthwave, techno). I’d be happy to try to give recommendations of any of these if you ask.
also love funk like Parliament/Funkadelic and some electronic focused jambands like STS9 & Lotus
What are some of your ambient recommendations? I was just listening to Tim Hecker’s Konoyo, also dig stuff like Global Communication, Boards of Canada, Grouper, Human Mesh Dance, Stars of the Lid, Biosphere.
Really into a electronic psychedelic cumbia genre that goes by Psicodelica Selvática (and other names) : Dengue Dengue Dengue!, Chancha Via Circuito, Yeahman, Son Rompe Pera, El Remolón’s Selva really hits the spot too.
I prefer my ambient to have a psychedelic aspect to it instead of just pure drone, so probably my favorite ambient artist is Ishq, namely his albums Orchid, Sama, And Awake, Bloom, and Lotus. Sinepearl and Chandanam are also artists that have a similar sound to Ishq. also check out Woob’s Repurpose album
getting into more of the psybient/psychill genre than pure ambient, mostly everything on Ultimae Records is gold imo (Solar Fields, Carbon Based Lifeforms, Cell, H.U.V.A. Network, Sync24, etc.)
Would be very helpful to have that for Mastodon as well. Kind of like a survey which the admins can fill out. I for example have a big problem with the Fediverse’s general strong aversion against sexually explicit content. Voluntary NSFW photos of yourself are also an important part of free self expression and know a bunch personally who do that on other sites.
Just kicking it into the “but this isn’t pornhub” bucket is plain wrong.
Yea I mean that’s the whole thing right? Why does there need to be a “no porn” rule when we have Communities? Why can’t communities make their own rules about whether or not they want to allow nsfw? Sometimes I want news about movies or games or current events. Sometimes I want tiddies. I’d like to at least have the option of having all of those things in one place.
The whole point of federation is that you don’t have to pick just one place. You can add communities from nsfw instances, communities from nerd tv instances, communities from your geographic locality, etc…
“What I’m about to tell you is top secret, a conspiracy bigger than all of us. There’s a powerful group of people out there that are secretly running the world. I’m talking about the guys no one knows about, the guys that are invisible. The top 1% of the top 1%, the guys that play God without permission.”
One thing about the Fediverse is its a little less “singular” so to speak. People spread out a little more, and you get fewer bigger places where a whole lot of people mingle.
The fascist kids and the tankie kids both have Instances of their own, fairly heavily defederated with a lot of the rest. They’re about as pleasant as you’d expect.
Screens, scaling, nvidia drivers, games… Even spent an hour on gnome trying to get my desktop background image to fill the whole screen instead of repeating to fill the space. Solution ended up being download an image editor and resize the image to be the exact same size as my screen resolution. Tried KDE and kept hitting 100% CPU bug
In the end I just wanted a pc that worked, so went back to Windows with WSL.
Seems a perfect combo. Do my dev in WSL, and the desktop just works.
However I’m getting increasingly frustrated at every UI change Microsoft make… Which is what made me try Linux in the first place. If Microsoft Win7 and early 10 was great, I wish they’d stop touching UI and just improve under the hood
No, already burnt out from reinstalling different distros. I try Linux desktop every couple of years and it’s always the same frustrations. I’ll give it another go next year
ReactOS is fascinating, when I was younger and dumber I was optimistic about the project…but at it’s current rate it’ll never be an actual usable daily driver, and with Proton, the need for it is lessening, not growing.
I honestly get where you’re coming from as I went through a similar process of hating Windows, trying to make Linux work for me and just ending up back on Windows. I finally settled on Nobara Linux, but in my personal opinion it might be worth looking into Linux Mint for you if you want a rock solid distro. I installed Mint for my girlfriend not too long ago and everything magically worked with Nvidia drivers, wallpapers, Discord screen sharing, etc. I was so impressed that I considered distro hopping one last time.
Is the coffee thing real? I’ve been thinking about getting tested, but if the coffee thing is real I really should. I thought it helped everyone focus, though I recognize I drink a lot more than average
Oh fuck me. I looked up how expensive it was to get tested earlier and was like na, not worth it, but that video fucked me up. I always thought I was just better at cleaning when I had a clean kitchen and did things in the right order… Which often involves a quick trip to the store…
So I don’t know you or how much you make, but if you’re an American and you make under a certain amount a year, Healthcare through the ACA can be very affordable. You will have to take time and look because it is convoluted as hell, but if you decide to, prioritize mental health services coverage and you can find some Silver plans that offer really affordable therapy. Mine is Bluecross Blue Shield and I pay $89 a month, but my therapy is free with no caps on how often i can go.
Thanks man. I get insurance though the market but make enough that my healthcare is pretty sub par for $200/mo. I like to call it my “if I go into a comma, I won’t wake up wishing I hadn’t” insurance plan.
Yes, for most people it makes them jittery. Similar to how Adderall makes nurotypical people manic/high. High caffeine intake is self medicating.
ADHD and ADD brains are functioning slower in parts, but this results in the typical symptoms of these disorders. So drugs that are “stimulants” bring the slow parts of the brain up to speed. In a typical brain these drugs over stimulate it.
Survived a suicide attempt from a fentanyl and ketamine overdose. Life had gone to shit and for whatever reason that day (I can’t even remember exactly), enough was enough. I had bought the stuff in advance for this moment although I was using dissociatives pretty regularly. I was on a video chat with a friend (someone who was also suicidal and we’ve talked previously about how we wouldn’t interfere with each other’s attempts if it came to that. we were really bad for each other, but it was just nice to see another light in the darkness and knowing you weren’t alone. we ultimately made each other much worse off). But anyways, she feel asleep, it was during that moment when I guess I went for it. Took all the fentanyl and ketamine I had, and was pretty much blacked out before realizing it.
Guess I walked back to the couch where she was still sleeping on the video call and I lost conscious there. Next thing I know I feel my body violently being shaken and then suddenly I’m in the ER. I couldn’t talk at all and couldn’t move anything from the neck down. that lasted several days and I slowly got motor control back. Took my legs the longest and had to do a bunch of testing.
Once they found out it was a suicide attempt I was sectioned and unable to do anything if my own accord for like the next month. I was sent to some facility specifically for people who have made suicide attempts and also had drug abuse issues. Was there for a few weeks before I was able to transfer into an outpatient program for the same thing.
I guess what had happened initially was that when I passed out I was in view of the camera, so when my friend woke up she was trying to talk l with me, realized something was wrong and then what had happened, and then she was able to get an ambulance. They got there and revived me and then that’s just a little before I woke up in the hospital. It at all just so confusing, and I think I’ll always be bitter towards that friend that called the ambulance.
Things were bad leading up to that point, but they’d get generally so much worse afterwards. None of those feelings went away and I’ve just learned to mask it for now because I’m just exhausted with everyone I know feeling like they need to be so involved with my life. My friend who saved me from attempt ended up taking her own life the next year. In a way I’m pretty envious I think
thanks dude. I’ve got my dog that is more important to me than anything else in the world, and I absolutely refuse to leave him by himself no matter how bad things might be for me. I appreciate the words though
The Science of Self Control is an excellent book about willpower and, well, self control. It goes into the science of it and how to use that to your advantage.
One thing I do is to reduce friction. You are more likely to do something if you make whatever it is easier to do. Conversely, if you want to stop doing something, increase friction (make it harder to do). Two examples:
You want to go to the gym in the mornings? Go to bed a bit earlier, get everything ready the night before, and maybe even sleep in your gym clothes.
Your want to stop eating cookies? Put them somewhere you’re less likely to walk past them or see them.
In your case, maybe try removing things that are distractions, e.g. put your phone on the other side of the room.
Sleeping in my gym clothes sounds like a radicaly effective move. Especially as it physocally connects evening me to tomorrow me, which I otherwise struggle to mentaly do…
When I was super down in different times of my life, I would sleep in my work clothes that way I would wake up and be on time for work. So yeah… this can be pretty effective.
It’s a really good way to get rid of the mentality of one person can’t make a difference. Because everyone is a drop, and without so many drops, there is no ocean. Maybe one individual drop doesn’t truly make a difference alone. But what if every drop was gone?
It helps me feel that, even if the difference I make isn’t big enough to make an impact, an impact only exists BECAUSE of all the drops.
That goes for both positive and negative things. A thousand bad drops are needed to make a bad thing. A thousand good drops to make a good one.
Sorry to question it, seeing as you like it so much, but doesn’t that not make a difference if you’re still fairly sure there’s not enough other drops?
I prefer the starfish on a beach analogy for the same thing because it cuts others out entirely.
Hm. Good question, and I can’t say I have a great answer.
I like the starfish one too, the ocean one is just better for my mindset.
I guess accountability? The starfish story appeals more to personal ego (not using the term ego as a bad thing here), where as the ocean one feels more like accountability to me.
Starfish is saying that the little thing you do can help someone, even if it doesn’t solve the problem. Ocean one is saying that everyone is responsible, even if only a tiny bit in the grand scheme.
I kind of pair it with a mindset of if every drop thinks that they don’t make a difference, that adds up. One person can’t save the planet, but every person thinking they can’t save the planet means that you have that ocean of people all thinking that they don’t matter. And that’s a big problem.
Like I said, probably not the best answer. Just rambling what came to mind.
Hey, if it works for you, I guess. I find I’m easily frustrated if I imagine there’s a ton of other people working against me but that’s really my issue.
