Resol, (edited ) in So, who or what ruined Christmas this year?
@Resol@lemmy.world avatar

The fact that we aren’t allowed to celebrate it in my country. It’s seen as unimportant. In fact, we don’t ever have Christmas breaks. I saw school buses packed with students heading to class today (and yesterday too), some are even taking exams. Radio stations play absolutely no Christmas music. Nothing in the country is decorated for Christmas. Life goes on as usual as if Christmas doesn’t exist.

This video by Gari Sullivan perfectly explains how life is for us. Yes, it’s 2 years old already, but I doubt that it’s that irrelevant.

davepleasebehave,

I notice that some places never seem to take my birthday as seriously as in my house either.

It’s a made up thing. make of it what you can.

hope you managed to find some of the sparkle you were looking for!

Resol,
@Resol@lemmy.world avatar

I guess that sorta makes sense.

Whirlgirl9, in Did any coal-in-your-stocking type of things happen to you on Christmas Day?
@Whirlgirl9@kbin.social avatar

my poor dog's anal gland burst. he got to go to the vet and is currently sleeping next to me with his inflatable cone. my poor lil guy.

Cornucopiaofplenty,

I’m sorry about your dog’s anus

Undef,

This feels like a good place to bring up the old Demetri Martin joke about how “I’m sorry” and “I apologize” mean the same thing… except in certain cases.

Mr_Blott, (edited ) in What hobby do you have that no one else in your family shares?

I love the World Rally Championship, but it’s a pretty niche sport as it is, I doubt there are many fans in my whole town!

But to answer your question, probably wanking

Pea666,

Now, I don’t know the man personally, but I’m pretty confident to state that your dad enjoys a good wank every now and then.

Mr_Blott,

Poor cunt’s dead 😂

Pea666,

Well. ‘Used to enjoy’ then.

user1234, in What's a food you love, that isn't worth making from scratch?

Cheese

Salad_Fries,

This 100%…

It is so expensive/time consuming/finicky for a product that best case scenario is comparable to store bought.

MeanEYE,
@MeanEYE@lemmy.world avatar

Depends on type. Some cheese is easy to produce. Others require a lot of effort, time, controlled environment, etc.

SupraMario,

Squeaky cheese! So damn expensive if your in any other state other than WI…

MeanEYE,
@MeanEYE@lemmy.world avatar

Squeaky cheese

Didn’t know this was a thing. Niice. One more thing to add to the list of things to try.

flambonkscious,

Paneer or even better, halloumi?

RBWells,

Paneer I only like homemade, but it’s so easy I hesitate to call it cheese. Pressed curds. Halloumi I don’t like, and what’s funny is I was just thinking today that now that I like swiss I like every cheese in existence but forgot about Halloumi.

drphungky,

Yeah I’ll probably never buy ricotta again after making homemade, unless I was really in a pinch for time I guess. You save a decent chunk of change on home made too. Mozzarella I’d go either way on.

Slowy, in Have you ever seen a rudolph moment happen in real life?
@Slowy@lemmy.world avatar

So did you you guys at least dip a cold chocolate bar in it? Was it good lol?

ericbomb,

Haha don’t think we ever found out, I think they were all conscripted for the fountain. I hope he saved one for himself since it was his favorite snack!

umulu, (edited )
@umulu@lemmy.world avatar

It’s moments like that were the kid should have told the teacher to fuck herself, and go get the chocolate someplace else xd

FlyingSquid, in So, who or what ruined Christmas this year?
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Well… you asked…

I’m not a fan of Christmas anyway. However-

I have not eaten solid food since August (I live on Ensure and Gatorade) and dry heaved every morning. The latter is in the past because, after months of trying to figure out what is causing this, I had my gallbladder out last Thursday and the heaving has stopped. But I still can’t eat and almost any food smell really disgusts me.

I mean the presents were nice, but between the surgery pain, the itching from where they shaved my entire stomach, the lack of eating, the not wanting to smell any Christmas food, and the general lack of energy… it wasn’t a good Christmas.

Please no pity party.

slurpeesoforion,

Dude, I have been there. Still no idea what was wrong.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Are you at least eating now? I had another 6-week bout of not eating earlier this year. This surgery was my last step before going to the Mayo Clinic, which will cost a huge amount of money (I’ll have to do a GoFundMe), so I really don’t want to have to do that.

slurpeesoforion,

It was 25 years ago. It gradually went away. Couldn’t determine a cause.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Not the best news for me unless it goes away relatively soon, but I’m glad that it never came back for you because it’s pretty miserable.

slurpeesoforion, (edited )

It was miserable. Good luck to you, squid.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks!

Sway_Chameleon,
@Sway_Chameleon@lemmy.world avatar

My dad spent, I believe, 3-4 years where every single meal he would gagging on the food and end up throwing up. Initially, they thought it was from the severe and chronic throat infection he had and because of our health care system it took them that many years to get his tonsils removed and at least rectify the infection issue. That didn’t solve the problem though, and eventually it turned out there was damage to a nerve in his throat that was causing it and he needed another surgery to fix that.

Watched him go through hell all those years, so I definitely feel for you and hope you get this resolved!

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Wow. Yeah, thankfully I don’t think I need throat surgery. Sorry about your dad.

nix, (edited ) in What search engine do you recommend that isn't Google or Bing?
@nix@merv.news avatar

kagi.com no ads, great results. It’s $5 a month but worth it imo

canihasaccount,

Seconding. Kagi is the only one that was able to replace Google for me.

GlitzyArmrest,
@GlitzyArmrest@lemmy.world avatar

This is the only true Google replacement I’ve found.

drfuzzyness,

It’s really good. The price tag is worth it imo as they buy results from a host of other search engines including Google, but the results are actually better.

graymess,

I need to try it out. If it’s as good as its reputation implies and stays that way, I’d be $5/mo amount of interested. But I have no idea how many times I’m going to need to search for something per month. Not a fan of that limitation.

Mr_Blott,

You can get 100 searches for free to try it. I’m using it for purchases and technical queries, because the results are hugely less polluted. If I’m searching for, say, a film or a book, I use Google and not one of my paid searches

supercriticalcheese,

For the web search I need to do it’s really not worth it. if my job required good web search results to be effective then it would be a different matter but alas I am not a software developer or an analyst…

Zima, (edited ) in What do you like about socialism?

I think of it as a mental disease societies can catch. I do acknowledge that is full of good intentions. it just doesn't work and ends in missery. it just fails to account for basic facts like human nature.

rhythmisaprancer,
@rhythmisaprancer@kbin.social avatar

Sounds like capitalism

Zima,

you might have hearing issues.

Ensign_Crab,

Yeah, capitalism is completely bereft of good intentions.

Zima,

yeah. unfortunately rejecting reality and substituting it with your own only works on the mind. it doesn't put food on your stomach.

DriftinGrifter,

Unfortunately attacking someone for holding a different position is why society sucks so much

Zima,

I don't see anyone attacking anyone here. perhaps some light trolling but nothing beyond that.

agamemnonymous,
@agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works avatar

Nope. Capitalism doesn’t have good intentions, just good PR.

Zima, (edited )

at least the way a socialist teacher taught me in primary school (and i don't completely agree with him but it's a good charactherization) you have desirable values of freedom and equality and they are in conflict. again I don't necesarrily agree with that and it boils down to the fact that when equality is implemented is always by averaging down everyone which is at the expense of freedom. anyways so supposedly you have capitalism as a system that places freedom above equality and communism as a system that places equality above freedom. so it's not really about good and bad but a conflict of virtues.

it's completely besides the point but i do rank freedom slightly above equality. in reality i would like to ensure some minimum level of support for everyone , i think that should be a pretty low level of support. just the bare minimun e.g. ensured education and equal chance at success at life, and health care depending on the actual amount of resources that can be allocated to it, nothing unrealistic but just the minimum to live without suffering, including other stuff like food and clothing and shelther as well. and then to have the freedom so that if anyone wants more than the minimum they should work for it. I'm sure that the people that wanted to work would be able to produce enough value to provide that minimum life support for everyone. so about 80% freedom and 20% equality.

agamemnonymous,
@agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works avatar

Capitalism isn’t about freedom, it’s about exploitation. The “freedom” it prioritizes is the freedom of individuals to lay private claim to the value of public resources (land, natural resources, etc), then use their control of those resources to lay claim to the value of the labor of others (the employee/employer relationship). It’s literally parasitism.

Capitalism is the “freedom” to extract profit. Profit is the difference between the price you sell something for, and the cost to produce it. It naturally results in paying employees less than the value of their labor, and/or charging the customer more than the value of a product. It is fundamentally a grift, profiting by skimming off value as a middleman. The freedom of the capitalist comes fundamentally at the restriction of freedom of everyone else, the majority “averages down”, that’s just a mathematical truth.

The longer capitalism exists, the more “freedom” is siphoned into generational wealth, and the more extreme inequality becomes. Capitalists gain the freedom to live a luxurious life without actually doing any work, while everyone else loses the freedom to use land and natural resources. It’s literally just “dibs” metastasized.

magic_lobster_party,

Capitalism takes into account for basic facts like human nature.

DessertStorms,
@DessertStorms@kbin.social avatar
magic_lobster_party,

We’re long past the hunter-gatherer reality with a world population of 20,000, which your post concerns.

DessertStorms,
@DessertStorms@kbin.social avatar
RainfallSonata,

Not that it’s necessarily what you’re implying, but it’s ridiculous to me that people think capitalism is an inevitable result of human nature but socialism isn’t. Either of them are just ideas we made up. The benefits and flaws of each are the result of human nature, just with different influences and in different ways. Socialism may fail to account for the parts of human nature that you find relevant. Because you’ve been brought up in a capitalist system to believe that, OR you’re directly benefiting from its exploitation. That doesn’t mean those are the only relevant parts of human nature.

Sterile_Technique, (edited ) in Corporate Censorship Bring You Here?
@Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world avatar

Not censorship, but enshitification. Reddit has been steering in an anti-user direction for quite a while. Killing the 3rd party apps that made that site useable was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

People who whine about being booted over “personal beliefs” tend to conveniently neglect to mention what those beliefs are. If you feel strongly that pineapple should absolutely NEVER go on pizza, then I’ll disagree with you and leave it at that; if you get booted from a community over that opinion, yeah that’s fucking crazy and indicative of a community that should be abandoned anyway. If you feel strongly about things like gay people should be killed or women should have restricted rights, then I’ll disagree with you and report your ass for every comment that even hints at bigotry, cuz you’re a horrible person and are absolutely not welcome here.

MSgtRedFox,
@MSgtRedFox@infosec.pub avatar

The not saying why they were banned is what inspired my question.

I was afraid those people would just come here, but the moderation based on instance and community seems to be working so far. I’m curious how’s that’s going to scale.

Sterile_Technique,
@Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world avatar

I’m curious how’s that’s going to scale.

The conversations about Threads has me nervous about that bit. If “because it’s fucking Meta!” isn’t reason enough to defederate with them by default, we’re looking at getting hit with a tsunami of content that will be impossible to moderate. Guess we’ll see.

MSgtRedFox,
@MSgtRedFox@infosec.pub avatar

The profile Blocklists could start growing, that’s for sure 😀

ExtraMedicated, in Who doesn't use an adblocker and why?

I haven’t bothered yet because I don’t really frequent the types of sites where the ads get in the way (although my occasional Youtube visits are starting to convince me to use one).

I do use a plugin made by the EFF that blocks certain tracking cookies though.

DoctorWhookah,

This certain plugin, is it Privacy Badger?

ExtraMedicated,

That’s the one!

Cosmicomical, (edited ) in What do you like about socialism?

What I like is that when there is progress, the progress is actually experienced by everybody and not just by a wider or narrower elite.

For instance, I love robotics but I can't stand that adding robots to society results in unemployment. You can't just let the owners scoop up all the capital gain.

RGB3x3,

I’d prefer the profits of robotics to be socialized rather than putting a limit on the jobs that can be eliminated.

Where’s our utopia where we don’t have to work to survive? Automation should make that a reality.

andxz, in So, who or what ruined Christmas this year?

Covid with a side order of severe pancreatitis.

Almost checked out permanently just in time for Christmas.

tamal3,

I’m glad you didn’t! Feel better.

andxz,

Thanks. These nurses are lovely at least.

ma11en,

Pancreatitis was the worst pain I’ve ever experienced, I had my gall bladder out about 6 years ago and been fantastic since.

andxz,

Agreed, I’ve had two major surgeries and neither came anywhere close to that level of pain afterwards. At least they gave me so much pain medication I kinda lost two days in a haze. It just happened to be Christmas evening and day that I missed completely, lol.

PhobosAnomaly, in What's the consensus on swearing here

Fuck knows, fuck you, and merry fucking Christmas.

In seriousness though: no idea. It’s nice though, not every sentence needs an f-bomb or a c-nuke. They’re just helpful and/or satisfying sometimes.

kernelle,

Literally loses it’s meaning and usefulness when overused as well

spacecowboy,

Just like literally!

indepndnt,

L*******y, or the L-word.

elbarto777,

What about a w-bomb?

sagrotan, in So, who or what ruined Christmas this year?
@sagrotan@lemmy.world avatar

My father dying. Haven’t had very much contact, but the rest of the family expected some things from me apparently, still don’t know what exactly, I just left the hospital silently, like my father left my life when I was four. I’m not really affected by the whole ordeal, but it really really annoyed me over Christmas. That guy couldn’t even die without making a fuzz. 🙄

Prethoryn,
@Prethoryn@lemmy.world avatar

While I am a stranger and me saying sorry probably doesn’t help much. That stuff sucks and I am sorry you had to deal with it. People have it in their head that we are all supposed to love our family and just get along but people don’t realize that families are sometimes just people who didn’t love us or loved us less than we loved them or vice versa loved us more than we loved them. Family is tricky. It doesn’t sound like you were close and I don’t know your entire story but either way it is a loss and regardless of him not being there for you it says a lot that you were at the very least there for him. Which, in my opinion, is the most you can do.

I hope you are the person that carries that forward and uses that as a means to not walk out on others lives when they need you most and I hope in return they are a part of yours when you are on your way out of this world. Enjoy your holidays.
