novibe, (edited ) in What hobby do you have that no one else in your family shares?

Music. My parents weirdly never listened to music. When I was a kid, the most they would listen to was a Queen greatest hits album and another greatest hits from this 80s band from my country. But like, only on road trips.

I don’t know why, but ever since I was very young I loved music. One of the first birthday presents I remember choosing myself was a copy of Dookie (Green Day). I didn’t know what it was, but I loved the cover. Less than a month later we were back to the record store and I bought this brand new album by a band I had never heard before, In Rainbows by Radiohead. And that was it. I was hooked forever. Music was to become the most constant and important part of my life.

I spent years finding and listening to music. Trying to understand the history and development. Music really was my main hobby in high-school, like listening to music.

Nowadays I also play guitar and produce a bit, but I still listen to music as a hobby.

And my parents still don’t listen to music at all lmao. Even after enduring years and years of me hogging the AUX cable and forcing them to listen to everything from Wu Tang Clan to Burzum and Sufjan Stevens and Nirvana… but I love them. The most they would say is “wow this is very heavy” as I blasted black metal lol

space,

I feel the same way. When I was a kid, my parents had a pretty small collection of tapes of religious music, and that’s the only stuff they would listen to. Once I got my first internet connection around the age of 12, a whole new world opened up.

Today, I listen to music all the time, while working, while driving. It was so weird (and depressing) to go on a trip in my sister’s car who doesn’t listen to music.

Sporky, in What's a food you love, that isn't worth making from scratch?

Croissants. Only really good when an independent coffee shop makes someone come in at 4am to start making them. Even the industrial ones at the big chains or supermarkets are pretty meh and it’s way too complex and time consuming to do myself but made right they are one of the best foods.

johannesvanderwhales,

Yeah I make a lot of bread but croissants are a whole other level of complicated.

Not to mention that seeing how much butter goes into them would probably make me not want to eat them.

banneryear1868,

This is like a lot of pastry that uses laminated dough, having them fresh out of the oven as intended is completely different than supermarket. I dunno what process you were using but there’s some easier ones and I find they all freeze incredibly well. Once I froze a few full muffin trays of kouign amann to bring somewhere and popped them in an oven, turned out perfect.

I can’t cook, so basically almost all the food in the world

SatansMaggotyCumFart,

Cooking is one of those things you have to do at least twice a day so I can’t understand not taking the time to learn unless you live in New York City and only have a hot plate or something.

Krauerking,

Because you don’t have to do it twice a day. We live in a society of people with lots of skills so having others that handle the cooking and you handle some other important beneficial task would be fine.

And then to fill space between wanting to eat what everyone else is having, using preserved or easy to eat items at home would fill the gap. That would be a rational society though. But we all need to be individually independent.

Delphia, in What's a food you love, that isn't worth making from scratch?

Tater Tots.

Now I dont “love” them as a standalone but I do a few really nice loaded versions for catering family events. I tried to “elevate” my dishes by making my own and while I could and they were a little better it took half a day and a shitload of mess.

Krauerking,

Honestly, you could probably make loaded hash browns and just make them slightly smaller and it would be pretty awesome. But I do agree that I’m not a big fan of the soak time for potatoes and getting them to bond and cook right.

bouh, in What do you like about socialism?

What do you like about capitalism?

RainfallSonata,
ryathal, in What are some dark sides to cute super-powers ?

Avatar covered water bending including blood. My hero academia does a really good job with covering pretty big disadvantages to powers.

Bread,

Blood bending sure is a creepy one.

Kolanaki, in What search engine do you recommend that isn't Google or Bing?

I just make a post in NoStupidQuestions and use y’all like a search engine. :P

ThrowawayPermanente,

I post answers to NoStupidQuestions with most of the keywords you’re looking for and a link to my AI-generated blog. Your move.

jcrabapple, in What is the goofiest Christmas present you received this year?
@jcrabapple@infosec.pub avatar

As a joke gift my mother-in-law got me a cartoon sized Star Wars pen and a Star Wars activity book. I’m 41.

SharkAttak,
@SharkAttak@kbin.social avatar

Joke's on her, that's the best gift.

slazer2au, in Who doesn't use an adblocker and why?

My wife, she plays mobile games where you get temporary boosts if you watch an ad.

Arin,

your wife has too much "free" time

spacecowboy,

Care to explain your comment?

Rhynoplaz,

I’m going to guess that they do not approve of those games and think that the wife is an inferior person because she enjoys something that they don’t.

BraveSirZaphod,
@BraveSirZaphod@kbin.social avatar

Yeah, she should be spending her time doing much more productive things like shutting on other people's wives on niche nerd forums.

TheInsane42,
@TheInsane42@lemmy.world avatar

You both know that good ad blockers let you whitelist some games?

I have 2 tablets, 1 to play the games, 1 to run the ads for those games. (And the ad tablet has nothing else on it)

Viking_Hippie, in Who doesn't use an adblocker and why?

My mom uses Edge, told me not to block Facebook ads and clicks on most of the clickbait articles on her MSN home page. It’s like she WANTS them to collect as much data to sell and spy on her as much as possible 🤦

themurphy,

You’ll be surprised how many people likes ads, and likes how much they know about you.

I don’t agree, but I can see the logic in that. If you see ads anyway, why not see them specialised to you making them somewhat relevant.

Awful take I know, but it’s the reality for many people.

GoosLife,

That’s not necessarily an awful take, to be fair. That is arguably to the benefit of the consumer, that they can learn about products that are relevant to them.

Trainguyrom,

I’m completely disconnected from what new movies and TV shows come out after years of blocking all ads. I can see wanting to change but ads have only gotten more annoying so I have no desire to change yet

BraveSirZaphod,
@BraveSirZaphod@kbin.social avatar

Personally, I get actually relevant Instagram ads pretty frequently, particularly for various events that I'm interested in. I've seen more than a few shows specifically because I saw an Instagram ad.

I'd naturally prefer no ads, but when they are necessary - and someone does have to pay the costs of running large platforms - I would prefer them to be actually relevant. It's still ultimately my decision as to whether I buy something or not.

EmasXP, in What search engine do you recommend that isn't Google or Bing?

Been using Qwant for maybe a year or so. Recently found Swisscows too. I am not sure if Qwant uses their own index. I remember that they said that they were to create their own index, but the results looks suspiciously similar to Bing. Swisscows for sure runs their own index, and I find the results to be rather good

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

if nothing else qwant has a good map, based on openstreetmap but with a vector renderer and with tripadvisor integration so it’s really easy to find restaurants

HansSlonzok, in What search engine do you recommend that isn't Google or Bing?

qwant.com

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

qwant also has their own really nice map! maps.qwant.com

it’s properly open source, based on openstreetmap, and integrates tripadvisor so it’s great for finding restaurants.

Jimmyeatsausage, in How would you feel/react if your home address was announced & published very publicly the same way celebrities experience?

If you own your home, it’s a matter of public record in most states. Hell, I once used to resolve a disagreement my wife and I were having over our neighbor’s name. Just looked up the property address on your county assessors website… They list the owners, when the property was last sold, the appraised value and taxes, and a bunch of other stuff.

jubilationtcornpone,

Our county even makes marriage licenses searchable online.

tiredofsametab, in What are some dark sides to cute super-powers ?

X-ray vision is horrible for cancer rates (though one could argue that, since it doesn't work like normal x-ray in many comics, that it's some other magic with the name x-ray for convenience).

ArbiterXero,

Well, I always figured that “x ray vision” was just eyes that were super sensitive to the natural background radiation everywhere, and not that they were actually transmitting x rays

otter,

I’m also not sure if transmitting x-rays would work

It’s not like radar, you’d need to also be on the other side to collect the data after it passed through the object

ArbiterXero,

That depends on whether the x-rays are absorbed by the bone/solid material or reflected.

I don’t know enough about x-rays to answer that.

Khrux,

As a counterpoint, combining Cyclops’s power with x-ray vision is a fun power combination, and it’s an interesting take to imagine his power as just cooking everything with radiation.

ArbiterXero,

I mean that’s kinda what lasers do…… but also interesting

x4740N,
@x4740N@lemmy.world avatar

Pretty sure xray vision can just see the xray band of the electromagnetic spectrum

I think superman can probably see the entire or a larger range than humans and can consciously filter it

SgtAStrawberry,

They touched on that a little bit in Superman Redson, Lex tried to make a Superman clone and its x-ray vision did all the horrible things of an actual x-ray. It was a super short bit, but I found it neat.

bighatchester, in What hobby do you have that no one else in your family shares?

Rubik’s cubes and puzzles like that . But that’s a very niche hobby anyways . I have a collection of probably 30 or so different cubes/ puzzles.

Karcinogen,

As someone who used to be into cubing, I find it immensely amusing that it’s one of the few hobbies where the Chinese off-brand is actually better than the original name brand. My main cube was a Moyu Weilong GTS2M.
