owenfromcanada, in Current and Former (Fast) Food Service Workers - How do you handle requests like “All the fries you can give me”?
@owenfromcanada@lemmy.world avatar

I worked at a Canadian burger place with notably orange trays. Got asked for all sorts of things. Tons of pickles was probably the most common–I think I piled a good 3 inches on one once (probably 30 or so long slices). It didn’t occur often enough to be a problem.

Seasoned_Greetings, (edited ) in After a lifetime against, I'm considering joining social media. Any advice?

I know you’ve probably heard this about a dozen times by now, but…

Don’t join Facebook.

They track everything they can about you, down to how long you spend looking at something on your screen. I’m fairly certain they listen to what’s going on around you if you put the app on your phone. An ad for something I’ve mentioned in passing has popped up on my feed shortly later too many times to be a coincidence.

They follow you around on your browser, too. They know what you shop for. It’s all specially tailored to sell you their ads.

I keep an account to stay in touch with my family, and it’s appalling how much more information they get from you than any other app. Not to mention the heavy prevalence of MAGA hats and I’ll-kill-you-before-I-consider-your-opinion conservatives.

Instagram isn’t much better, but at least the people there are nicer.

pHr34kY, (edited )

The spying is horrendous. Even after taking so many measures, I still swear I’m eavesdropped occasionally. Ad blockers, private DNS, Firefox containers, GrapheneOS on my phone (I only install messenger, not the Facebook app). I don’t use Facebook on Windows.

I wouldn’t be surprised if other people’s devices are collecting info about me. I have no control over that.

Unfortunately it’s at a point that I won’t get invited to parties without it. It’s how my friends all organise events.

sbv,

It sounds like Facebook tracks non-registered users as well, so everything you’re saying remains true for everyone who doesn’t have a pretty strong security posture.

If OP isn’t blocking third party cookies, FB scripts, and piholing unwanted requests, they might as well join the platform and get the tenuous benefits it provides.

MajorMajormajormajor, in Is there a forum for people who are lonely and sad but specifically not incel sickos?

The easiest way to make friends (and this is no easy task if you’re an adult) is to revolve it around hobbies. Find people who share the same interests and conversation is easier if there is something to talk about. This can be online or in person. For example, there are weekly DnD games that happen at local game stores, or book reading clubs, or take a woodworking class at a local college, or find a forum that is all about one niche subject you’re into. If you don’t have hobbies then you have to find something to try, and just try everything you can to see what you are into.

As a once socially inept kid who was bullied mercilessly, social skills are something that takes practice. For me, changing schools, taking up a sport, and getting a job where I had to socialize with people is where I learned to socialize. There were a lot of very awkward conversations, but eventually you figure out what works and what doesn’t.

z00s,

Came here to say this. Friendship will develop naturally if you have a hobby in common. Takes the weirdness away, gives you something to talk about.

Meetup.com is very useful

ImFresh3x, (edited ) in what are your fun, low stakes new year resolutions?

I’m gonna start doing my Duolingo more. Even if it’s just a few minutes at bedtime.

stackPeek, in After a lifetime against, I'm considering joining social media. Any advice?
@stackPeek@lemmy.world avatar

It’s better if you filter out and moderate the usage. Just because social media it’s bad doesn’t mean there’s no good part.

RebekahWSD, in Lemmings without bidet: how do you deal with your period?
@RebekahWSD@lemmy.world avatar

I get a shot in my butt every three months so I don’t get my hell periods.

Before that, showers were hell because I had such heavy flows. Everything was just hell.

Tetra, (edited ) in Is there a forum for people who are lonely and sad but specifically not incel sickos?
@Tetra@kbin.social avatar

I've given up personally. I don't know if it's life circumstances or me not being as good at heart as I'd hope, but I've resigned myself and I'm just trying to learn to cope with the loneliness. At some point it's fair to call it quits and start being realistic.

That's just me ranting though, this isn't directed at you, and I wish you the best of luck.

TheGalacticVoid,

I still have faith in you even if you think you quit. One day, you’ll stop feeling lonely.

aniki,

I can be surround by people I call friends and still be lonely. It’s not a thing that starts and stops

TheGalacticVoid,

I understand. Loneliness isn’t the same as being alone.

droning_in_my_ears, in Is there a forum for people who are lonely and sad but specifically not incel sickos?

There’s Wusoup which claims to be random chat without the sleaze. I’ve not used it myself.

Lennnny, in What's your favorite instrument that really gets through to you?
@Lennnny@lemmy.world avatar

Ukulele. It’s so easy to play, C is just one string! And they’re small enough to take in your carry on if you travel. I own 5…

stoy, in what are your fun, low stakes new year resolutions?

I make one new years resolution every year, to not make any other new years resolutions.

So far it is going great!

randomuser38529,

Listen here you little shit

AgentGrimstone, in What is your favorite part of the day?

Early morning, 5-7am. I like the cold air, empty streets, and the feeling like time has slowed down so I can enjoy it for a little while.

AgentGrimstone, in How to stop eating junk food?

Drinking lots of water or brushing your teeth might help you resist the urge.

psion1369,

I read somewhere that often when we are feeling slightly hungry we are actually thirsty and our body knows there is moisture in healthier foods. But we tend to aim for salty dried out snacks that really have no benefit. So I suggest getting a large water bottle and make the effort to drink when feeling hungry. That’s what I do.

shalafi, in Is there a forum for people who are lonely and sad but specifically not incel sickos?

I feel you on all that, I really do. Guess my brain responded to bullying by going the other way, fighting to learn socials skills to make it stop. I’m old BTW, we might have different definitions of “bullying”. Mine definition is; “getting the shit kicked out of you daily at school, while the teachers watch or participate, and/or being constantly on the lookout to avoid said ass beatings”. All that to say, I get you.

Anyhow, you might not like this take, but going outside is probably your answer. I know how facile that sounds, but you’re not going to make any sort of meaningful human connection with a keyboard.

What does “going outside” look like for you? I got no idea, but I got experience. If you like, DM me and I’ll give you my email or phone number. Hell, maybe we can help motivate each other.

binomialchicken,

I’ve been outside. It was awful.

I’m sorry for your past struggles and appreciate your reaching out like this a lot. Gives hope.

Much love and a happy new year to you.

shalafi,

Those struggles are decades past. And I learned from them! Wish OP had reached out to me. I feel I could help give them ideas, or at least the hope you mentioned.

And a happy new year to you as well!

Joker, in Anyone who recently had a "Yup, it was that kinda day" day. What happened?

A couple days ago I was swapping out my GPU. As I was carefully removing the glass side cover, it basically exploded in my hands. I don’t even know how.

There’s glass all over the room and I’m bleeding from the little shards that hit my hands and arms. Every time I think I got all the glass I find another piece. I finally get it all, replace the GPU and fire up the PC.

I hear crunching sounds that seem like they’re coming from the fans on the front. I shut down so I can vacuum out the remaining shards. As I’m taking off the glass front cover, that shit slips out of my fingers and fucking shatters on the floor.

I couldn’t do anything but laugh at that point. I cleaned up again and decided I’m not going anywhere today because it’s one of those fucking days.

0x4E4F,
@0x4E4F@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yep, one of those days 😂… you feel like “I better start laughing cuz crying ain’t gonna help” 😂.

EddoWagt,

I don’t even know how.

Do you perhaps have a stone tile floor?

weeeeum,

Man I’m so glad my glass side panel has a steel frame around it. At work I’ve had to repair a couple PCs like that and man they make me so anxious. It’s best to bite the bullet, unplug everything and lay the PC on it’s side.

XTL,

Glass can do that with internal or external stress. One of the reasons I absolutely hate it as a material.

Thrashy, (edited )
@Thrashy@lemmy.world avatar

Had that happen to my case a few months back and haven’t bothered to replace it. Tempered glass is super strong on the face of it, but if you get the slightest scratch on the edges the internal stresses in the glass will literally blow it up. I know it will mar, but I’d rather have an acrylic window any day of the week, or better yet, a sleek solid side panel.

jacktherippah,

I had the same thing happen to me but I was luckier. When I was 15-16, my parents had a big ass glass shower door sitting around so they asked me and my cousin to bring it downstairs so we could sell it. As we were trying to move it so we could pick it up, the thing exploded into a million shards flying everywhere on the floor. My cousin and I were basically unharmed but the floor was littered with tiny tiny glass shards that was a pain in the ass to clean up.

NaoPb,

It seems these things happen more often with glass side panels. I don’t how how or why, but it’s not just you and most likely it’s not your fault.

A_Random_Idiot,

This is why i dont have any interest in glass side panels.

I dont even like clear side panels, but if i have it i’ll take acrylic… sure, it supposedly scratches easier, but wtf are you doing to get it scratched in the first place? probably the same kinda stuff that breaks tempered glass, lol.

blaine, (edited )

Same here. Call me old-fashioned, but the only part of my computer I have any interest in looking at is whatever is being rendered on the monitor.

I don’t need any LEDs in my PC because the case is a black metal box with no side panels. Any time/effort/money spent on making a PC “look cool” is time/effort/money that should have been spent making it perform better.

umbrella,
@umbrella@lemmy.ml avatar

red leds wont make your computer go faster, overclocking is blue leds wont make it cooler, tuning fan curves and undervolting is

and so on

NaoPb,

I like the lights but I agree with you.

A_Random_Idiot,

I have LEDs in my computer against my will, because the heatsink and motherboard both came with them and to get ones that didnt would have cost more.

My GPU used to have them too, but I recently upgraded to a new one that doesnt, which is fan-fucking-tastic in my opinion.

Looks like the floor of a abattoir after a unicorn butchering.

NaoPb,

Your BIOS/UEFI might have some settings to turn off lights, if they can’t be controlled through ways of RGB.

dustyData,

At least the high quality parts have RGB controls that let you turn them off.

A_Random_Idiot,

sure, if you use windows and download their proprietary spyware control panel.

dustyData,
cactusupyourbutt,

some can be controlled by open source, like my case leds

NaoPb,

And even jf you do want to have a clear side, plastic is the better/safer choice.

NaoPb,

Yes they only really get scratches when mishandled. They’re lighter and they don’t break.

I still have a lot of older cases with the acrylic (called plexiglass over here) and they’re fine. I’m not planning on buying anything new, but when I do I din’t want anything with a glass panel.

kreiger,

Why have glass panels? That’s just asking for trouble.

Joker,

It’s silly but I like color changing LED lights.

monsterpiece42,
  1. super helpful comment.
  2. OP doesn’t have them anymore.
