tigeruppercut, in What popular quote are you tired of hearing?

I guess you don’t see it too much these days (outside of maybe yearbooks or collections of inspirational quotes), but Frost’s “I took the one less traveled by,/And that has made all the difference.”

If you read the rest of the poem the narrator explicitly states in several different ways that the roads are pretty much the same. So the narrator is saying that by later on saying the roads are different he’ll be retroactively be justifying his choice or just not telling the truth about it.

Bilbo,

Even after rereading the poem I had to read the Wikipedia analysis section to be convinced you are right. It’s a very subtle poem, which, honestly, just makes it better.

tigeruppercut,

I always thought the confusion came from just seeing the last two lines out of context, because the poem itself has descriptions like “Then took the other, just as fair”, “Had worn them really about the same”, and “both that morning equally lay”. It seemed like Frost was really hammering home the equality, considering 15% (3/20) of the lines are talking about the similarities.

Bilbo,

That’s the thing. Being just as fair doesn’t necessarily imply it’s equally travelled. Even being worn the same doesn’t necessarily mean equally traveled, although it strongly implies it. I think the final line is so certain that it overrides the earlier lines and implies to the unwary reader that these similar paths actually were differently travelled.

I don’t expect self contradiction in a story / poem. So that certainty of there being a difference overrides all.

It’s only after reading the author’s intentions that I know for sure that the contradiction was intended and that was actually the point of the poem.

As I said before, this makes me like the poem even more now.

Critical_Insight, in What popular quote are you tired of hearing?

“Fuck around and find out”

safesyrup, in How does one create a sub-group at Lemmy?

You choose an instance where you want to create your community on and click „create community“ on the respective server‘s sidebar

Justly0250,
@Justly0250@lemdro.id avatar

and for promotions you could use !newcommunities

otter,

Then later on there’s also !communityPromo

nachtigall,

As a side note, OP’s instance does not allow new communities.

maegul,
@maegul@lemmy.ml avatar

But users can moderate communities on instances other than their own. So it’s common for a user to create an account on another instance just to create a community, then add their main as a moderator just for convenience. So it’s not a show stopper if OP wants to keep using this account.

wowwoweowza,

I mean instance

wowwoweowza,

This explains so much. What is a better community for me?

Varyk, in Are those rust spots?

Yes, that is rust, but it’s in no way dangerous, and you can also scrape it off with any abrasive scrub if you don’t like the look of it

pezmaker, in Are those rust spots?
@pezmaker@sh.itjust.works avatar

I’m not a health expert, take this with a grain of salt. I’d be disappointed it was rusting, but also mostly shrug it off and keep using it unless it gets bad and flaky/scaley

Chronographs, in Why are 90% of the images WebP format?

If something doesn’t support webp you should really be converting it to png not jpg so it doesn’t get more degraded

JohnDClay,

Isn’t jpg more efficient for pictures, whereas png is better for graphics type elements with defined colors and edges?

eerongal,
@eerongal@ttrpg.network avatar

Jpg is really bad for anything with sharp lines, such as text. It also doesn’t support alpha channel (transparency) which is reasonably important in modern web design.

PNG is loseless, which is great for… anything other than storage/bandwidth due to file size. There’s even an animated PNG standard, similar to animated GIF, but you never see that used anywhere.

Chronographs,

Jpg is lossy and throws away information every time it is used, that’s why you get the “deep fried effect” when you re-encode something repeatedly. PNG is lossless so it’s a perfect replica of whatever image you encode with it. It does take up more space however.

LillyPip,

Minor niggle: the ‘deep fried effect’ isn’t because jpg throws away information every time, it’s because the compression algorithm averages pixel boundaries, and that averaging multiplies with each compression pass.

It can actually bloat the size of the file by adding information – adding data to previously null pixels, whereas png would keep them clean.

e: it achieves this through pixel averaging (fuzzing), which is why you’ll see grey artefacts bleeding into the pixels around line art. This is magnified with each compression.

Slotos,

You’re conflating “data” with “information”.

Repeated re-encoding loses information. “The compression algorithm averages pixel boundaries” is a perfect example of losing information.
That it sometimes results in more bits of data is a separate phenomenon altogether.

chris, in What do you think about Lemmy, so far?
@chris@l.roofo.cc avatar

It completely replaced Reddit for me. I love the project. It is getting better and better.

bratorange, in Is there any evidence that Reddit has suffered at all from the exodus to Lemmy?

Is it important that Reddit suffers? For me the important thing is that lemmy flourishes and has good oc.

BrainisfineIthink,
@BrainisfineIthink@lemmy.one avatar

This is what I wish more lemmings would grasp. I’ve commented before how there’s this disillusionment that reddit actually died when a bunch of people left. It didn’t. The sooner everyone can stop being in denial about that, the better.

The situation is really more akin to an abusive ex and the people that left realizing that they’re better off without them. You’re in a better place. Stop talking about, focusing on the drama that your ex brought and just embrace your newer better environment.

Millions of people are in that situation and don’t leave because they’ve been manipulated, they’re scared, and in this case addicted. My brother in law switched from Apollo to the official app and hates it, complains every day, and says reddit sucks now…but won’t leave.

Pofski, in How do you deal with the thought of having to work for 40+ years and then when/if you retire, you're too old to do much?

A pivotal piece of advice once shifted my perspective on work. It was put simply: ‘If the thought of retirement is your main motivation, you might be in the wrong job.’ This implies that if you’re constantly counting down the years to retirement, you’re essentially wishing for time to fly by quicker. But those years are valuable, and letting them slip away in anticipation of something else isn’t worth it. The key is to find a career that reduces your stress and enhances your life now, not just in the future. While financial security is undeniably important, it’s also crucial to recognize when you have enough and to prioritize your well-being and happiness in the present.

Prking, in How do you deal with the thought of having to work for 40+ years and then when/if you retire, you're too old to do much?
@Prking@lemmy.world avatar

The answer is: do a job you like and do the things you like. I’m due to retire in ten years and won’t be doing so. I won’t work as much but I will work

It’s easier in some countries than others. But the key is not wasting time on things that you feel pressured to do because of societal norms or because you’re too lazy to do anything different.

Gormadt, in How are you all making it right now with grocery store prices?
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I’m doing a lot more cooking that’s for sure

Pancakes can really go with anything, they’re basically a large flat biscuit. Not to mention they keep quite nicely if frozen or simply put in the fridge

curiousaur, in Am I the only one getting agitated by the word AI?

You’re a fool if you think your own mind is any more than a large language model.

LadyLikesSpiders, in If reality wasn't wholly rational, could one ever come to terms with it, or would one rationalize it instead?

Have you seen the world? Shit’s irrational as fuck. I’ll argue here that rationality has an aspect of subjectiveness to it; It is based on your ability to understand and perceive things. There is a very very small number of things you don’t know, and a practically infinite ocean of things you will never even know to not know. Even things that behave rationally may behave irrationally under some variables you will never even fathom, and so, to you, that would just be irrational

You wanna see something rational? Read fiction. Truth is always stranger than fiction. It was Mark Twain who added that “fiction has to make sense.”

NotSteve_, in What's a movie you don't really watch but your damn proud to have on your shelf?

I’ve got The Room on DVD that sits proudly on my shelf

OneCardboardBox, in Have you ever seen coal burn? If yes, why?

As a child, Easter holiday in a cottage in Cornwall. It had a coal fireplace.
