What if the perceived increase in numbers of androgenous and trans people has a chemical basis: chemicals from plastics interfering with the endocrine system.

What if the perceived increase in numbers of androgenous and trans people has a chemical basis

I’d be willing to wager it’s mostly due to it being safer to be “out” than it was just a few decades ago. Speaking as a 40-odd trans person, growing up in the 80’s meant a much higher chance of getting your ass kicked or worse by your “peers” if you stepped out of line when it came to gender expression. I’ve always been what I am now, it’s just that it’s been safe to actually do it “out loud”, at least for the past decade or so – that seems to be changing now that the right is radicalizing rapidly.

erogenouswarzone,
@erogenouswarzone@lemmy.ml avatar

I was reading What to expect before you’re expecting and it says to stay away from any food that comes in any kind of plastic, esp if the plastic container needs to be heated/re-heated.

It says when it gets into your blood stream your body thinks it’s estrogen.

The most fucked up part is the EPA says the risk is very low. Probably because plastics are literally everywhere, and banning them at this point would cause an economic catastrophe. Which it def would.

www.mayoclinic.org/…/faq-20058331

This is an article about BPAs, but they are just the tip of the iceberg of the phtalates - chemicals used to make plastic more durable.

ondoyant,
@ondoyant@beehaw.org avatar

that’s far from what the study says. there is no research on the effects of plastic chemicals in human beings cited in the study, the vast majority of the data is in rats and mice. saying that its responsible for trans people requires some very large leaps of logic that aren’t supported by the data or the conclusion of the study.

we have a great deal of anthropological evidence that other cultures conceive of sex and gender in wildly differing ways, both through history and in the modern era. gender identity is a complex social and cultural phenomenon, not some essential trait of the human body with a basis in endocrine function. maybe i’m just sensitive to this shit, but i can’t see somebody making a claim like this without just fundamentally misunderstanding what being trans is.

Tankton,

Holy shit, how is this not a super high priority right now? Not because of trans people but the conclusion that microplastics interfere with hormones seems super fucked up

Conyak, in Not today, sorry.

This is really hard for me but I have had to put my foot down in recent times. It still makes me uncomfortable but I just can’t support this anymore. If I’m sitting down at a restaurant with a server I tip 20 - 25% but I’m tired of tipping for takeout and I absolutely refuse to give extra when checking out at a store.

Rolder,

What about at a coffee shop or something similar?

Conyak,

I don’t go to coffee shops but I wouldn’t tip there either. I don’t think I should be responsible for paying employees a living wage. Charge me appropriately for the item and pay your fucking employees.

yozul,

I agree that’s how it should be, but how things should be doesn’t pay the bills. Don’t take your anger out on the employees. Those are the only people you’re hurting.

And don’t put the blame on the customer. Demand better wages. I’m not taking it out on anyone.

    Your current president literally raped a woman in 1993. Her name is Tara Reade.

    Also, after winning the Nobel peace prize, Obama dropped an average of 30k bombs / year (80 per day) during his presidency, mostly on Muslim countries, 2, 3. In 2016 alone, dropped 26,171 bombs in the Middle East and North Africa, up 3000 from the previous year. The countries bombed include Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Libya, and Somalia.

    doctorcrimson, (edited )

    Tara Reade’s story is purely hearsay, and she didn’t come forward until Biden was running for president 26 years later. Everyone who worked in that office at that time said it would be totally out of character and they’ve never heard anything like it.

    All that stuff about Obama is whataboutism and honestly the man looks like a saint compared to Trump and Bush.

    doctorcrimson, (edited )

    Listen, I can say that any number of past employers raped me, but why does that alone constitute evidence? Tara Reade has plenty enough to gain from lying, and nobody who worked there corroborates the claim. They even called it absurd.

    yogthos,
    @yogthos@lemmy.ml avatar

    There is plenty of collaborating evidence to her claims and what you think she had to gain from chuds like you making her life hell as result I have no idea. You’ve exposed yourself as an utter piece of human garbage here.

    doctorcrimson,

    Present it. She literally published a book and accepted paid speaking events. Accusing Biden pays all of her bills. Last I heard the only people who were willing to side with Reade was her mother and her neighbor. If there were a sexual harassments claim in a government office then there are normally large paper trails and documented statements involved.

    Imagine using straw man arguments when you have no actual point to make.

    doctorcrimson,

    My point is very clear, if people want Epstein’s list of associates and people who paid him to see justice, then they need to vote accordingly, and definitely NOT for the guy who was good friends with Epstein and visited his island many times.

    yogthos,
    @yogthos@lemmy.ml avatar

    Everybody on the list should be prosecuted, why aren’t the democrats doing that?

    doctorcrimson,

    First of all, if a hearing is held in congress and not by the DOJ, then you’re absolutely expecting too much to think anything will be done for justice of past crimes. I don’t think the Senate or House can do anything on this topic other than keep the government funded. Historically, Congress has never shown the capacity to prosecute outside of changing how laws are enforced, which is moot because everything Epstein did is already illegal.

    Second, I assure you there are active investigations to many of the names in the list, but not much incriminating evidence was found for the more than a thousand people he had some form of contact with over the last couple of years due to their discreet methods of conducting business. A lot of relevant court documents only recently became unsealed since trials started in 2016. Many new contacts were revealed at the end of the Virgin Islands Civil Lawsuit as well. Ghislaine Maxwell got 20 years, Sarah Kellen could be next as Federal Judges have expressed interest in charging her as early as the conclusion of the Maxwell trials in January 2022, JP Morgan have spent 13.8 Million USD on legal fees in the case and will pay 290 Million in reparations for facilitating the financial side of Epstein’s business, Deutsche Bank will pay 75 Million, etc. To claim that nothing has happened and nothing is being done is ignorance.

    As much as some people would love to blame and execute Bill Clinton, for example, all he ever did was borrow the man’s plan on a trip to various charity medical sites across Africa that Epstein was unrelated to. So then where do you draw the line? Epstein made it his business to go to parties and shake hands with the influential. He disguised himself as a wealthy venture capitalist for over 2 decades before being outed as a trafficker.

    In fact, almost half of Maxwell’s charges were dropped because there wasn’t enough concrete evidence and some of the charges overlapped with a previous conviction where they were granted immunity in a plea deal for state level charges. That’s how hard it is to get a conviction for a crime with only witness testimony. It’s like pulling nails. But it can be done.

    Nothing is actually happening, and I don’t know what you think I’m wrong about. You’re just making up excuses for why nobody has been prosecuted so far. And if you think a bunch of democrats aren’t on that list then you’re as gullible as they get. All your oligarchs are the same and your country is an utter lawless shithole where the rich do whatever they want.

    The issue, which is obvious to most people that aren’t Euro-American, is that if you view generations of colonial violence as a normal baseline, then calling for “both sides” to “stop fighting” whenever colonial subjects resist isn’t actually calling for peace. It’s calling for the colonized to submit and go back to being quietly exterminated in an orderly fashion so you can go back to not thinking about it.

    GBU_28,

    Is conquest exclusive to euro-american history?

    ComradeChairmanKGB, (edited )
    @ComradeChairmanKGB@lemmygrad.ml avatar

    No but colonizing generally is.

    With the exception of Japan.

    GBU_28,

    Do you think all other borders were agreed upon via a nice arm wrestling match?

    TheDankHold,

    They already acknowledged that conquest isn’t exclusive to euro-American history so I’m not sure what point you think you’re making right now.

    teichflamme,

    Oh, really?

    What about the middle eastern empires? Or the turks? Or the Aztecs?

    Or literally any other force in history lmao

    TheDankHold,

    If you reread they never said those nations didn’t engage in conquest.

    teichflamme,

    And they also settled and slaved on the annexed lands, thus engaging in colonization

    porcupine,

    No, but modern settler colonialism is largely limited to the Euro-American present. White Euro-Americans built the empire they now live in on a centuries long campaign of ongoing brutal extraction against the rest of the world, then turned around and said “This is just the way god made the world. Why would anyone want to disrupt this natural state of peace?”

    Peace for a slaver is not peace for a slave.

    SwampYankee,

    Brutal extraction isn’t unique to colonialism either. Colonialism is just ancient imperialism with boats.

    That said, imperialism has never been moral and we shouldn’t excuse contemporary imperialists, just like we’d probably be appalled at the exploits of Julius Caesar during the Gallic Wars if we weren’t so far removed from them.

    InputZero,

    Which goes back to the saying “you can’t use the masters tools to tear down the masters house.” Which I disagree with, you can’t use the masters tools to build your own house but you can and should use any and every tool available to you to tear down the masters house.

    With that said, us being observers at best, you can just feel bad about the whole thing. It’s okay to just feel bad that bad things are happening, you don’t need to force that feeling to pick a side. There is no both sides argument, but people on both sides are getting hurt and it’s okay to not feel okay about that.
