Lootboxes are legalized gambling for minors. So yeah, no shit it works. Just because a thing is profitable doesn’t make it good. The opioid epidemic proved very profitable, but just like gambling for kids, doesn’t make it a thing we should accept or want for our society.

freijon,

I did not say or try to imply that it’s good. I said sadly it works. With emphasis on SADLY.

DrJenkem,
@DrJenkem@lemmy.blugatch.tube avatar

Fair enough, I’m certainly not about to disagree on the profitability of gambling (for the house specifically).

Graylitic,

It certainly brings in Profit. It doesn’t “work” as in provide value to society, but it certainly works in making profit.

Its part of why the Profit motive is fundamentally flawed and encourages manipulation, addiction, and general bullshittery.

this,
@this@sh.itjust.works avatar

Well, theres “working” and theres “working well”. Capitalism is not working so well anymore and its likely going to work worse as time goes on. more things will become automated, wealth inequality (and therefore a gap in political power) will grow, and companies will keep expecting increased growth in a world of limited(and in some cases, decreasing) resources. Capitalism currently “works” in the sense that its making resources move around, but thats about all its doing for regular, non rich, non well off people(and often is not doing even that much for them). It’s simply not sustainable when unregulated, thats why we need a well regulated economy.

Tar_alcaran,

The US probably has some rural bike paths, but I sure as shit haven’t seen any.

(guys they mean the sudden changes in road quality)

Chariotwheel,

Dutch bicycle lanes? And here I thought the US was car junkie hell.

TexMexBazooka,

The US is giant. Some places have better bike infrastructure than others but it’s surely not the standard

NaibofTabr,

No, bad bike infrastructure is the standard.

SternburgExport,

He probably meant borders.

BorgDrone,

I thought he meant poorly maintained infrastructure.

IMongoose,

Ya, the US doesn’t have the bike lanes everywhere but there are tons of shit roads that turn into great roads due to town/county/state invisible lines.

doleo,

Thanks for contributing information about your underrepresented country

You are most welcome.

TexMexBazooka,

I mean… we have interstate travel and the US is massive. There are no real borders between states.

  • TexMexBazooka,

Except for the similarities between both places having open borders… something explicitly mentioned in the post…

    mayonaise_met,

This post isn’t about open borders, it’s about the contrast in bicycle and road infrastructure between the Netherlands and other countries. The open border was just the setup.

The Netherlands has very specific urban/rural (re)design standards which are quite recognizable if you know them.

    TexMexBazooka,

Oh do they? That’s interesting, do they have standardized bikes lanes everywhere?

    mayonaise_met, (edited )

Well, yeah. There are guidelines for new infrastructure, but that doesn’t mean everything is up to date everywhere. There are roads that haven’t been resurfaced for quite a while that aren’t up to date. But on the whole it is very similar everywhere.

It’s only a small country though.

There is a Canadian YouTuber who lives in Amsterdam who makes videos about it: YouTube.com/notjustbikesI’ve lived here all my life so it’s nice to get an outside perspective on this all.

Slow, in ...Then you select it, and the Captcha fails.

I hate these captcha. You look at the picture, the edge of the traffic light or the motorcycle goes outside the box. You decide to click on the square where this tiny part of the image is and the message “This is incorrect!”.

Captcha without images from Cloudflare is even more infuriating. The so-called “Connection reliability check” takes quite a long time and this captcha appears often.

What really baffles me is how people that have dishwashers manage to do this. Like, use bowl/whisk/cutting board/whatever > put in dishwasher. That way, all you have to do is wash your knives while everything else cooks.
