One main problem is all the wrong answers it generates. Imagine if when we invented the calculator it fucked up the answer 30% of the time.

@stevedidWHAT@lemmy.world avatar

Agreed, all are possible to iron out as the tech progresses. I can’t imagine Edison or Tesla were successful in every aspect of their inventions either.

The ability to automate effective learning and training for diverse tasks is arguably the crux of human progression. We’re making more and more “meta” things and I think it’s really promising for our future as a species.

whether you’re atheist or not, judaism, christianity and islam (as well as several other smaller religions) are all abrahamic, meaning that they all stem from the same root religion. theyve all evolved over time, but in essence, the god they worship is literally the same one throughout all three.

Kase,

I agree with what you’re saying. I might be wrong here, but I got the impression the person you replied to wasn’t saying that the statement is fictional/wrong, but that the god is fictional

tygerprints, in The future is now

We have automated paper towel dispensers, if that ain't space-age magic I don't know what is. I think we found out that flying cars are a bad idea. It turns out most people could not operate a regular car correctly.

ThatWeirdGuy1001,
@ThatWeirdGuy1001@lemmy.world avatar

Honestly I loathe those auto dispensers.

I get the hygiene aspect but it’s annoying af waiting for it to register your hand wave just to spit out a pathetic amount of paper towel.

tygerprints,

We did this test with petri dishes in my high school biology course where we had students wash their hands, air dry them or use paper towel dispensers or air-blower dryers, and compared all the results. Oddly enough the paper towel and air drying alone both resulted in lots of bacteria growing in the dishes. I'm not sure how effective those paper towels are - or if it's just that kids don't know how to wipe their hands!

ThatWeirdGuy1001,
@ThatWeirdGuy1001@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah honestly it’s amazing we don’t have a pandemic all the time with how much microbes exist everywhere all the time.

But I guess there is a reason why the human population completely fucking exploded after the creation of antibiotics.

tygerprints,

Well when you think that our adult bodies have more foreign bacteria in them than human cells, it's pretty amazing we can even move, or walk or talk. We're kind of walking bacteria bombs. Maybe our systems get used to being overloaded with bugs and so, that feels normal to us.

davidgro,

tygerprints,

They tried to teach people to use hovercraft, and it was a miserable failure. There are so many more controls with that, and people just couldn't get it right. I shudder to think about putting people into flying cars, especially when they already drive under the influence most of the time.

captainlezbian,

Yeah what we need is flying trains! Or not because it turns out flying uses a ton of fuel. What we need is public transit! Which fuck it turns out we started dismantling back in the 20s. Oops

zaphod,

Yeah what we need is flying trains!

We have levitating trains, close enough.

tygerprints,

But the important thing is, they should be FLYING not merely levitating! Levitation is the opiate of the weak!!! or something. In the future, everything should be flying around indiscriminately at top speed!! TOP SPEED, DAMMIT!!! I want to zoom into the nearest brick wall as fast as possible! Also, I want my anti-gravity toast!!! I'm tired of having to keep my breakfast down by myself.

FartsWithAnAccent, in It's a curse

This was probably me with Smash Bros in college: Nobody in the dorms would play me after a certain point, but I'm sure I would've gotten my ass whooped by professionals.

peopleproblems,

Right? I watch the videos and they’re pulling off moves in times I don’t understand.

But wiping the floor with my friends isn’t fun. I’ve settled on not using Roy/Ike, Captain Flacon/Ganondorf, Mewtwo/Locario, Donkey Kong and Samus. Actually I haven’t used them in so long I’ve probably handicapped myself with at least some of them

dudinax,

My kid could beat everyone at smash bros in high school. My friend’s kid was number two in the state. My kid couldn’t touch him.

My friend’s kid could not touch the number one kid in the state and that kid wasn’t good enough to go pro.

Soggy,

I went to school with the number one melee player in my state. I played him a ton over the years and never beat him once. The skill disparity between “serious tournament competitor” and “best in the neighborhood” is boggling.

rekliner,

This is the sobering reality for many a hometown hero of physical sports too. Being the best in your city, 1 in a million even, puts you in tight competition in college sports and then worse as a pro.

edgesmash,

I have this problem playing smash bros with my kids. Solution? Pump up my handicap to >100% and play Kirby. Basic hits knock Kirby out, so it actually becomes a challenge for me, and they love beating me up. Win win!

Fogle,

When you’re too good for your friends you have to handicap yourself. Play new characters or give up a finger or something.

Zorque, in Sir Isaac Newton died a virdgin to atone for this sin

Algebra existed long before Isaac Newton.

Nougat,

Ah yes, Mr. Albert Gebra, I remember him well.

hansl,

It was a rainy Saturday and the local farmers were in and about when he told me about those darned letters.

niktemadur, (edited )

I thought it was Algernon Bracamontes of Aragon.

Also yes, it was Dimitri Maglev who invented maglev train technology.

hessenjunge,

Pythagoras died a ‘thirdgin’ because of this. /s

I.e. you don’t even need algebra to use letters.

EatYouWell,

The funny part is that his theorem had already been discovered by an ancient civilization. I want to say the sumarians, but honestly that’s the only one I’m familiar with, so I could be wrong.

hessenjunge,

I would not be surprised if someone thought of that >1000 years before him.

VulKendov,

You can’t even blame Newton for calculus, he refused to publish his papers about it. Leibniz is the guy you’re looking for.

But everyone remembers Newton cause he’s the guy who got bonked on the head with an apple and invented gravity or somthin.

ArcaneSlime,

And if Everytown and MDA get their way, the entire world. Poor people don’t deserve rights anyway, they should be subjugated by the rich because clearly the rich are better and more important than you poors, right?

Kalkaline, in No water for like 3 days to get that look

You don’t have to live up to Hollywood standards, you just have to stop holding everyone else up to Hollywood standards. Just look at day time talk shows, those people have no problem finding a partner, and the only reason they end up on those shows is because they have no sense of shame.

This is me in racing games. This is why I like to play games like Forza. I can play a private lobby where I can take less powerful cars and race my heart out against friends in more powerful ones.

Spent most of my time making liveries and tuning my cars to make them ridiculous to drive.

IndiBrony,

It’s the Nissan IDx from 2013. Sadly, it was only ever a concept car, but I loved the design.

And thanks for the compliment; I can lose many hours designing the liveries on these things 😂
