Tbf a lot of the ‘new[city]’ was given their names by the British empire expanding their land. Just look at Australian state names… The Americans doing this in more recent times are simply following suit.
“I can’t help with dinner, the dog has his head on my lap.” “Well, sure, that’s fine, honey. I just made a cat move off my lap because at least ONE of us has to be responsible.”
I especially hate this because it’s often after like 10 hours of staring at a wall doing fuck all. As soon as I start doing literally anything, all of a sudden I’m in high demand.
What is it that causes this behavior from people around us? I think we have all experienced this before, which means that people are probably predisposed to want your attention when it’s elsewhere, but not care about your attention if it’s nowhere.
The post is overtly political, saying grandpa here is preparing for Nazis 2, the sequel. Secondly, choosing Lemmy over Reddit is a political choice itself. It’s much more mainstream to just use Reddit, so to go against it is political.
It’s licensed under GPL and doesn’t have ads for political reasons, that’s more my point. People who care enough to use Lemmy over Reddit are going to be more opinionated and passionate.
Yeah probably 17th century - confirmed as early as 1703 but expected to have existed earlier. So I was definitely wrong. But how do we know it wasn’t invented thousands of years earlier and forgotten? But yeah, not in Jesus’ time.
When I was a little kid I asked my grandfather one time what it was like to “fight evil”. His response was something along the lines of “I didn’t fight evil. They were just a bunch of scared kids doing what they were told. Just like me.”
My grandfather fought in Europe, but Japan was still what kicked off WWII. So, I was super nervous about bringing home the woman that would become my first wife for the first time. Her family was from Okinawa.
When we got there he sat down at the kitchen table and talked to her for a long time. I was in and out doing stuff for the dinner, but they looked happy enough. Later that day he caught me outside and gave me a hug. He told me that she was a good woman and I’d be crazy if I didn’t marry her.
I really miss my grandfather. He was mostly a good dude.
Here’s a picture of him during the battle of the bulge. It’s from a book I have, but this picture was originally published in “Yank” magazine. The original clipping sat over his chair in the living room my entire life.
Dedicated to people who posted anti-vax misinformation and such on social media, then subsequently died of Covid, like Herman Cain. Was super busy in 2021 when (preventable due to vaccines being available) covid deaths were at an all-time high in the US. The monster was usually labelled “Delta variant” and Spongebob was “Me.”
