Tischbein, in It's just a coffee

If a subscription would be as good as just having the file or software offline… I might even pay for it. Yes I mean including DRM-Free backups like www.gog.com

pastel_de_airfryer,

Humble Bundle does that. Their subscription comes with a collection of DRM free games you can just download and keep forever even if you cancel it.

Tischbein, in Sad but quite true :(

Who keeps track of that? Seems weak.

People with social anxiety who wonder if they’re just annoying you by texting you too much or more than they should.

I got banned from c/politics because I said that we should treat Republicans like they treat trans folks. In an unironic message the mod said my language was threatening without understanding that’s my point: the right are saying incredibly vicious things and can’t take their own heat. The mods over there are turning it into a right wing echo chamber.

LesserAbe,

I haven’t followed mods of c/politics at all, but I’m skeptical that it’s a right wing echo chamber because we’re talking about Lemmy

Turn off your read receipts.

Problem solved.

Fuck Amazon but it is not like the others in the meme

Amazon lets you acquire physical items, of insane variety, delivered to your door, often for a price lower than you can find it in physical stores. Often delivered same day and almost certainly same week.

That’s an insane value compared to something like a game company that’s like “teehee you can pretend to own this until we get bored of hosting it and then poof fuck you!”

turmacar, (edited )

I did the math for me and even with the Amazon credit card the service wasn’t worth the price. It’s free shipping over ~$25(?) dollars anyway. “Prime shipping” hasn’t meant anything significant since at least 2020. It’s often the same as non-prime, maybe a day earlier.

If you care about the shows that maybe changes, but they have about 5 and anytime you search for something it’s a tossup whether it will be included with your subscription or only available for buy/rent or on some other platform. It’s even more fun when there’s ‘copy’ of a movie included with Prime, and another available for buy/rent and and buy/rent version is at the top of the search results and the one you already paid for access to you have to scroll to see.

GBU_28,

At least in my area prime shipping is insanely fast, but yes. My point was you get a physical item from Amazon where as the others are purely digital

zeekaran,

Prime Video is changing at the end of this month. Ads or you can pay $3/mo.

I’m actually just canceling instead.

ScreaminOctopus, (edited )

Amazon is probably the worst of all of these. The only reason prime exists is to lock you into their store for all your purchases, when shipping orders should be a discrete charge for each shipment. At least the rest of these (except for Adobe and Nintendo, who suck about as hard) give you access to their infrastructure that lets you access the entirety of the product they offer instantly, whenever you have an internet connection.

GBU_28, (edited )

No. You get to buy a shovel with faster delivery. You get the shovel, forever. Nintendo let’s you “buy” a game they could sunset at any moment. You possess nothing.

TealTallMachine, in Sad but quite true :(

I’m autistic and i almost never remember to initiat the conversation, or feel like it’s not appropriate. If any of my friends felt like you do, i won’t have any more friends. And i love my friends a lot and can’t survive without them. Don’t over think it. Each has their own way of socializing. It’s about the journey, not its initiation :)

undefinedValue, (edited )

You but maybe your friends have anxiety and start to overthink things. Just text your fucking friends bro, they’ll appreciate it.

TealTallMachine, (edited )

I do, just not as often. I can’t control it. I do make sure to let them know i appreciate them contacting me though. As much as possible. Also, i don’t understand why the beginning of socializing is more important than the rest of it. Why is me being engaged and interested, continue the conversation, showing appreciation throughout, and making it obvious that I’m enjoying it and would enjoy more in the future, why does that have less weight than a “hi”? I can start a conversation with anyone, wither i like it or not. But keeping up the conversation is what matters to me.

You’re right though, it is a teamwork thing. Any relationship requires work from both sides. I present my work by showing appreciation to my friends, and so far it seems like it’s working in lowering their anxiety and over thinking :)

I intentionally do this as a commitment mechanism. I understand that they will be told as soon as I open it, so I don’t until I’m prepared to respond.

My new head cannon is that people like ultrawide monitors so they can more easily follow a comment chain and get into more arguments with strangers.

JayDee,

One of my monitors is vertical for seeing more web content/code at a time, and it is also perfectly geared for this apfrication.

Is there a way to tell Lemmy to provide more depths of context pr use a wider content column by default? Mine only goes to like 3 and the column width is very wasted on my 1440p monitor.

Sidenote, Anthony Hopkins as Tom Hiddleston delivering that “Oh shit” was so fucking hilarious. Perfectly executed.

Kase,

Fuck, I genuinely forgot that wasn’t Tom Hiddleston until you said that. I was just like “no no Tom Hiddleston is just pretending to be Anthony Hopkins, it’s magic, you see…”

In conclusion, you’re very right, and I’m an idiot who gets too immersed lol

CptEnder,

Naw naw that’s just the magic of Sir Anthony Hopkins, absolutely acceptable to fall for his sorcery.

Lasherz12, (edited ) in Sad but quite true :(

This isn’t really a big deal. A lot of introverts are friends with extroverts because they’re more comfortable doing things they don’t want to do. It’s no different than being friends with someone because they work harder to maintain a line of communication. So long as you show appreciation for that dynamic it can be healthy, especially if you’re up front about your struggles.

Lots of extroverts would appreciate how they’re allowed to be the center of enertainment within the group or that they’re allowed to take the reigns on what the group does. So long as it’s symbiotic you’re needlessly dropping potentially amazing friends by overthinking and applying your version of fairness that probably doesn’t match anyone elses version. It’s far better to just put in the effort you want to put in and keep expectations at a minimum.

Subscriptions are O(n)

One time purchases are O(1)

You want O(1)…

lseif,

a subscription to a service X is O(n), where n is for how long you keep that service.

instead purchasing the content provided by X individually, is O(m), where m is how much content you buy.

if in one subscription term, you would spend more purchasing individual content than one subscription fee to X, it is financially more efficient to use X.

however, this assumes you will only consume a piece of content once, and dont care about having a physical/true copy of it.

a O(1) scenario would be like a lifetime subscription to X.

ps: i am fully on the side of owning media, and i have no idea if this comment is actually true, it just sounds smart :-)

Fwiw, the cats that respond to it by coming to you are likely socialized with humans , and friendly enough that you can pet them. Which is always a plus because petting friendly animals is good for you.

The ones that run away, or just ignore you, are likely either feral or at least not human friendly, which means you at least know how to avoid getting scratched, by not trying to mess with it.

All of that is pretty damn obvious, but it really is a good way to determine what to do with a cat you don’t know in your vicinity. If you’re involved with spay and release in any way, it helps sort out where you’ll need to deploy traps.

Wodge,

What about my cats? They acknowledge it, but ignore me. I guess they’re just rude.
