I was in elementary school when 9/11 happened. My brother is 6 years younger, and doesn’t actually remember it. So yeah, I felt old when he was learning about it in high school history classes; And I was only in my mid 20’s at the time.
My personal idea is that they are objects created both to flex metalworking craftsman skill and in worship of sacred geometry. Ancient peoples ascribed divinity to the harmonies of the universe, especially the harmonies in mathematics like geometry. The fancier looking platonic solids like dodecahedron and icosohedron have almost magical levels of symmetry built in to them making them both aesthetically pleasing complex shapes. The fact they even exist inspires philosophical and even spiritual thoughts. As far as I understand romans had some very impressive archetecture incorporating mathematical ratios almost constantly, archetects and metal workers may very well have needed to worship geometry as a divine aspect in order to achieve such neurotic levels of mathematics in their aesthetic.
My theory is that they had no practical purpose, they were just a trendy knickknack that eventually fell out of fashion. A Roman equivalent of a fidget spinner or something.
In a few thousand years whatever has become of humanity will be digging up fidget spinners and wondering about them in the same way we do with dodecahedrons. It’s not as if anyone will have been preserving fidget spinner media for millennia to explain them.
Did you know that you can be a landlord too, even if you can’t afford a whole house? There’s such a thing as a REIT (real estate investment trust) where you can buy shares in a company that owns and rents out real estate and sends you your share of the profits while you don’t have to do anything except give up the option to invest that money somewhere else, which is actually really important.
I don’t expect everyone here to be able to invest in the stock market; my point is that there are easy ways for even middle-class people to obtain income from rent and yet most of them aren’t doing that because other types of investments are usually better for them. Being a landlord is not some unique source of money for nothing; it’s one of many ways to invest your money in a productive asset and usually not the best one.
Did you read the article that you’re linking to? Rent seeking in the economic sense does not mean purchasing property in order to rent it out to tenants.
Money for nothing. Read it again yourself genius. What part of purchasing property to rent it out makes you think you’re getting money for creating value?
Renting out property does create wealth. Think of a house as a factory that produces shelter. Running the factory, as opposed to leaving it idle, increases the amount of shelter in the world, and shelter is a form of wealth.
That’s a well-established economic theory and I’m not contradicting it. What I’m saying is that renting out the house after it’s built continues to create wealth. A world in which I build a nice house but keep it empty is wealthier than a world in which I leave the land unimproved, but a world where I rent that house out (or live in it myself) is wealthier still. The experience of living in that house, as opposed to some inferior option, has value.
I save to disk, no one thinks about it until we’re all camping and I’m the only one that decides how many times we’re gonna watch Lord of the Rings this weekend.
Personally, I used to be an amateur shill spotter in my free time, but 8 years ago I was in an auto accident on my way to work that left me paralyzed from the waist down. Shitty as it was, it was honestly the excuse I needed to finally pursue my passions with all this new free time I suddenly had, so I basically went all in and became a full-time shill spotter.
It was going well at first, but I quickly found myself hitting a wall. Lot of shills were flying under the radar that I didn’t see until it was too late. Turns out it wasn’t me, but bad equipment. My fiancee, who sadly passed away a few years ago, bought me this pair of SpezTech credibility goggles that have really elevated my shill spotting game. I wouldn’t have thought I needed them, but now I honestly can’t imagine how I ever went without them. It makes it so much easier to spot astroturfed product placement.
That same pair has held up really well over the years and I probably would have been fine with just the original, but I did get a few specialty pairs that I use for calling out fake sob stories and political bad actors. They weren’t the cheapest, but for what you get out of them, they’re well worth the money.
It instantly turns me off any game. Much of my free time for gaming on the weekends is really when I’m doing less active chores, like laundry. If I can’t pause to change loads and fold, I can’t play that game.
I play a lot of souls likes and most don’t have pause. But they usually save your position if you go back to the main menu; so I pause by just quitting to the main menu.
It’s called UniversalPauseButton (no link because on phone, but you can Google it). It basically makes the PAUSE/BREAK button pause any active process. Press it again to unpause.
Will likely cause issues with online games, but if you’re playing offline or in single-player, like Witcher 3, Remnant, Baldurs Gate 3, etc it works wonders.

I remember when I was a kid my buddy and I were raving about some game because you couldn’t pause it. It was so cool. Emersive. You really had to make good decisions with you inventory, etc etc.
Today I’ll just turn the game off if it tries that bullshit lol
which supports linux, and I believe takes a slightly different approach on windows so where one app might not work for one game you could try the other
Yeah, but they do a lot of good stuff for the open internet, and they respect user freedom and privacy. Unlike Google, they allow you to use proper adblockers and don’t want to screw you over with this MV3 bullshit.
That will hide your own posts and replies as well. So if you post something and go to check on it later in your profile it wont show up. I thought my posts were being deleted for awhile there, till I looked it up.
