Yeah it’s nuts. However there are a huge number of open-access journals, and they are becoming more common. BMC/PLOS are the big ones in my field (biology/genetics).
PLOS still charges a fee if your institution is not part of their “network”, and it’s not cheap, but their articles are free for all to access.
I am having a sneaking suspicion that you are getting your memes from Reddit. And don’t get me wrong, I really appreciate that you are adding a lot of content here, but I’d say it’s bad practice to increase the Threadiverse’s reliance on corporate social media, partly because it drowns out original content which still can’t nearly compete, and partly because it increases traffic over there.
I get them from a lot of places, not just Reddit. Not doing this forever; I’m just trying to start a match. ;) Sal put me as a mod, so I am just stirring the pot!
