Mediocre_Bard, in Why in the year 2024 and with all the knowledge humans have now do people still believe in religion?

Existence is pain. Religion is one of many ways to relieve it.

cordlesslamp,

Then why religious people are so stressed about causing other people pain?

MJKee9,

They aren’t in my experience. They are stressed about increasing cognitive dissonance.

BlueLineBae, in What can the US do to help Mexico finally stop the cartels?
@BlueLineBae@midwest.social avatar

From what I understand, the US is actively investing in the Mexican economy right now in order to both shift our manufacturing reliability away from China and also to provide economic stability in Mexico to shift power away from the cartels. Please take this with a grain of salt as I do not remember where I read this and cannot provide a source. But from what I recall, the long term plan is to setup manufacturing in Mexico for the above reasons with the bonus of reducing shipping costs, time, and shipment vulnerability. I really hope it works, because if you think about it, it just makes sense all around. If we make Mexico our biggest trade partner, we both benefit in big ways. And the more options people have in Mexico for jobs, the less they have to rely on the cartel.

Aside from that, I used to agree that legalizing drugs would take the market away from the cartels, but then you have to remember that the cartels have since diversified. So stop eating Haas avocados??? I don’t know, I’m just a graphic designer ¯_(ツ)_/¯

TWeaK,

That’s exactly true, I can only imagine it isn’t widely published because the GOP would rather rant and rave about TEH IMMAGRINTS!! and take any opportunity to say the government isn’t making things better. Meanwhile, a Republican President (you know which one) would rather sell even more production to China with no checks whatsover in exchange for a very cheap bribe.

BlueLineBae,
@BlueLineBae@midwest.social avatar

I think what kick-started this was all the tariffs that were implemented under the Trump administration. It led corporations to move their manufacturing to other countries and in the process, it was generally discovered to work best to move manufacturing to Mexico. Now under Biden, they are trying to actively encourage moving things from China to Mexico.

TWeaK,

BUT THE WALL!!

Reverendender, in What can the US do to help Mexico finally stop the cartels?

There are definitely some good ideas in this thread, I would like to know, however, where I can go to escape the crime, violence, inequality, and corruption in the United States?

HurlingDurling, (edited )
@HurlingDurling@lemmy.world avatar

Canada? IDK

I guess we keep going up right? /jk

But seriously, it’s very concerning how much worse the corruption in the US is getting

Reverendender,

Definitely. It’s built right into the system. Fucking lobbying. How does any rational person let that continue? We need the zombie of Teddy Roosevelt to run in ‘24.

(Is there a high demand for process managers with decent AI skills in Canada?)

GuyDudeman, in The 2024 US Presidential race officially starts Monday, what are your predictions for Iowa?
@GuyDudeman@lemmy.world avatar

Trump will win the nomination. But he will have to campaign from prison for the general. And will lose.

MindSkipperBro12,

He’ll win the nomination but the Supreme Court will say he’s a free man, for whatever bullshit reason.

Pistcow,

Then Joe Biden can order Seal Team 6 to assassinate Trump…then the Supreme Court!

Uno reverse.

Nollij,

That would certainly be the most interesting timeline

JimmyBigSausage,

DarkBrandon 🔥

bradorsomething,

DarkBrandon is just Biden his time…

gregorum,

I think there’s a good chance he won’t make it on enough state ballots to have a chance to win.

Pistcow,
derekabutton,

I don’t need to open this link to know he can’t win most of the most populous.

Artyom,

That’s far more likely to be a map for Biden’s win than Trump. It’s not a likely map, but it is more likely.

stub,

Very similar 153 tabs currently, had to check with Tab Session Manager for the count. Linux with 32Gb Ram. Firefox gets restarted maybe every 2-4 weeks. Occasionally I kill a tab that takes more then 1Gb of memory.

tun,

I use Tab Counter Plus and put the number at the top of the sidebery sidebar.

Honestly, we shouldn’t consume drugs at all, but to each their one I always say.

However, I completely agree that the ATF should change their policy and prohibit ALL gun sales without a US identification and simple background check at least.

southsamurai, in What can the US do to help Mexico finally stop the cartels?
@southsamurai@sh.itjust.works avatar

Snort less coke, mainly.

chepox,

Demand will never wane. It is human nature. It’s like yelling really loud “stop being hungry humans!” (well kinda, hunger is not a good analogy but the opinion is that drugs are a fundamental flaw with our human design. Just asking to stop does not work. Also, jailing those who do doesn’t help any either.

The attack has to be financial. Outsell them. Legalize, tax and monitor. Make it a health concern not a law breaking issue. If it is no longer profitable to export, cartels will hurt and weaken and that is how this very powerful organizations are taken down. Take their money away.

Automated underground bike storage

derpgon,

We got a few of bike towers on the ground in Czechia. Very neat.

billwashere,

Why does this remind me of Death Stranding?

Bluebanrigh,

It’d be cool if they had those here but I swear we have enough idiots that would try to get in for shits and giggles and maim themselves

SkaveRat,

Make it self cleaning. Problem will solve itself after a while

qyron,

You could put giant billboards warning for the risk and it would still become a recurring event. Even if it said “warning: this is capable of grinding a human being to pulp”.

Bluebanrigh,

Meanwhile, I can’t retrieve my bike because someone’s mangled arm is jamming the main lift.

darkmatterstyx,

New viral challenge…

qyron,

Now you got me seriously depressed.

Malfeasant,

“Not only will this kill you, but it will hurt like hell the whole time you’re dieing”

qyron,

Where is that sentence from?

Why can’t we have basic, objective, uncomplicated worded warnings like that? Maybe the stupid ratio would drop.

Malfeasant,

I’ve heard of it posted on high voltage electrical panels, but never seen it myself (I’m not an electrician). I don’t know if I got the wording exactly right, but it sounds good.

AscendantSquid,

I’d imagine it’s got weight and pressure sensors, so I don’t think a person would get very far. I can definitely see the mechanism getting jammed by garbage or some shit, especially if someone’s trying to jam it.

Bluebanrigh,

Maybe, hopefully? I’d imagine whatever idiotproofing they do won’t be sufficient for the wild.

Potatos_are_not_friends,

We can’t have a lot of things because that 1% is fucking morons.

Everything from clean public bathrooms to high end vending machines.

Azal,

US here… it has less to do with the 1% being fucking morons and more to do with the only infrastructure we actually pay any attention to is cars. Sure we’re having a bit of a bicycle revolution but at least in my area the bikes aren’t being used for transport but for fun, but then that’s with a metro that’s sprawling with a city that’s only 100 sq miles smaller than NYC, with 8,000,000 less people in it. Add that the auto companies were allowed to buy out things like the streetcar that was local and able to tear up the tracks to get rid of competition, it really isn’t a shocker.

But we’re now stuck in a cyclical spiral, of no investment for things like this are happening because it’s not seen as profitable enough. Which means a constant problem of using something like a bike for commuting is “But then I have nowhere I can put my bike where it won’t get fucked with.” so people don’t commute with it, which leads to no investment to the infrastructure.

Dunno how to fix it. It just sucks.

sfgifz,

Don’t forget privacy in toilet stalls - I’ve seen the huge gaps in doors in the US.

I don’t have solar power, so the lights might still go out, but I still have a natural gas heater so I’m probably fine. I’m hoping we can keep the roads clear because I don’t want to use PTO until I can enjoy my time off.

PizzasDontWearCapes,

Natural gas furnaces still need electricity to run the blower and exhaust fans

Kalkaline,
@Kalkaline@leminal.space avatar

Neat, my heater is literally a gas burner on the wall, so it will work without electricity.

someguy3, (edited )

The pumps for the natural gas grid won’t be powered though. Now the question is if those have what I assume would be massive generators along the grid, which I doubt.

@reallyzen@lemmy.ml avatar

Duh, we have high-speed rail in Morocco. It’s called Al Boraq and is the best way to blast from Casablanca to Tangier.

And it is not overpriced like in France, where the tgv is more expensive than a taxi to the airport, your plane ticket, and then another taxi.

seliaste,
@seliaste@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Tgv is awesome but I do agree that it is quite expensive

Resol,
@Resol@lemmy.world avatar

I thought I was the only Moroccan on Lemmy.

I also live in an area that doesn’t get served by the Al Boraq. We don’t have trains in general over here and I am jealous.

I also learned about the Al Boraq’s existence the hard way, because in the summer of 2022, my family had to drive me from Casablanca to Tangier and back by car, which took us like 3 hours on one trip.

shalafi,

I’d kill for a fast track to New Orleans, Atlanta, Little Rock, Tulsa, Nashville, all that. Ply me with cheap beer, let me chill and ride. What a dream.

AngryCommieKender,

Private sleeping room. I’d never fly inside the US again.

Azal,

Kansas city… what I’d kill for a fast track to Chicago, St Louis, Denver and the like…

I mean fuck, at least we have Amtrak to Chicago and one to St Louis… however only runs once a day, takes as long as driving as long as the priority that goes to freight trains doesn’t delay too much.

Professorozone,

Don’t quote me on the exact time but I heard somewhere that they run so close to schedule that a bullet train arrived something like 18 seconds late and the company apologized for the delay. ( might have been a minute or two but I recall it was really, really short. )

NeoNachtwaechter,

Confirm. That’s Japan. The driver is in trouble when it’s a minute or more

Wodge,
@Wodge@lemmy.world avatar

We’re doing fine with that in Switzerland thanks.

themurphy,

Also, the EU just launched a new plan for railroads all across Europe! Ofc Switzerland won’t get any additional upgrades, but they are still somewhat connected because of the proximity.

Link to picture of railroad plan.

JimmyMcGill,

Switzerland doesn’t really have a high speed rail network. In fact they design against it. Indeed the country is very small so it’s not a huge deal but then again there are flights between Geneva and Zürich so it’s large enough for that.

Their rail system is by far the best in Europe though and one of the best in the world only surpassed by the likes of Japan. They just aren’t really know for high speed rail.

sapetoku,

Switzerland is very mountainous and has pretty fast trains too, although not Shinkansen-fast. Swiss trains are expensive and comfortable and the vista is pretty much always great.

KuraiWolfGaming, (edited )

Would love to be able to take a sleeper train to the border with Canada, then have one of my friends from Toronto pick me up so I can visit them.

GiddyGap,

Would definitely blow minds in the US, but most of the rest of the western world is pretty much up to par.

Wahots, in What's some amazing technology they have in Japan that's very normal to them but would blow our minds here in the US and western world?
@Wahots@pawb.social avatar

Bidets. General cleanliness everywhere, kinda like what we had when everyone was cleaning like crazy during the pandemic, but even more so.

GiddyGap,

I believe the bidet is actually French. I assume that counts as the “Western world.”

PM_Your_Nudes_Please,

Probably helps that kids are instilled with a sense of cleanliness at a very young age. Kids help cook school lunches on a rotating schedule, and everyone helps clean up afterwards. Litter is also a big social taboo (which is funny because public trash cans are basically nonexistent. You’re expected to carry your trash with you until you get home.)

intensely_human,

The cleanliness of Tokyo is mind blowing.

KinglyWeevil,

Saw a video from Denmark I think where everyone is biking everywhere and the metro station has an enormous numbered rack for depositing bicycles for storage. The entire thing is spotless, well maintained, and has zero graffiti.

All I could think is that in the US the fabric of our society and the integrity of the social contract is so degraded that even if we somehow had the political capital to build it - it would be destroyed by individual anti-social behaviors. And we’d certainly never have the wherewithal to maintain or repair it.

Eyelessoozeguy,

I think the problem would be not considering the upkeep. Just look at the roads in the US, individual anti-social behavior didnt graffiti those potholes.

WhataburgerSr, in What's some amazing technology they have in Japan that's very normal to them but would blow our minds here in the US and western world?

Kei trucks that are extremely functional and fuel efficient.

The U.S. won’t ever get that because they are extremely functional and fuel efficient.

GiddyGap,

And they are not manly enough for the very manly men in 'Murica.

jabathekek, (edited ) in Folks in North America, where do you like to get PC parts online these days?
@jabathekek@sopuli.xyz avatar

The last computer I built (not for me) was a mix of Amazon, Memory Express and Canada Computers (got the list from PC PartPicker).

Amazon had the memory and CPU I wanted; MemEx had the mobo, PSU and case; and CC had the monitor. I tried to get everything from MemEx though, but they just didn’t have everything I needed.

May be worth mentioning that NewEgg is now hellah anti-consumer. I would avoid them at all costs.

CraigeryTheKid,

Pre-2014 or so I was 85% Newegg or more.

Post, I’ve been 85%+ Amazon. I buy from B&H when I can, but honestly Amazon tends to dominate the PC partlicker list.

To clarify - I removed Newegg from the vendor list. Won’t even look at them.

jqubed,
@jqubed@lemmy.world avatar

I haven’t been able to leave them entirely, but I try to avoid B&H as much as I can. They were sued by the federal government twice over civil rights violations, particularly for their treatment of Hispanic employees. It wasn’t just stuff like not promoting employees and paying them less, but Jim Crow-era stuff like not allowing them to use certain bathrooms, as recently as the past decade. Once I could’ve written off as some bad manager, but the Feds sued them again a decade later and it was basically all the same stuff, so to me that’s a cultural problem.

I also worked at a manufacturer where they were by far our biggest reseller, larger than everyone else combined including our own direct sales. They were a giant pain to work with; every interaction felt like they were flipping us a giant middle finger. Our accounting team especially hated dealing with them; we got some new people in who figured out they were always trying to claim discounts and refunds they weren’t entitled to. If our people pushed back and could show they weren’t allowed they would cave, but it took a lot of their time every month. I try now to buy from their smaller rivals like Adorama or AbelCine even if it might cost a little more; most of them were so much nicer to work with.

CraigeryTheKid, (edited )

Oh jeez! Good to know.

Amazon is no saint either, obviously; it’s getting hard to buy from anyone if you learn too much about them!

jqubed,
@jqubed@lemmy.world avatar
