Dankry, (edited ) in Are there any people who were offended by Norm MacDonald's comedy? Was he controversial, or nah?
@Dankry@lemmy.world avatar

Don Ohlmeyer for one. He’s the NBC executive who had Norm fired as SNL’s Weekend Update anchor because he wouldn’t stop mocking Don’s friend, famous double murderer, O.J. Simpson.

LemmyKnowsBest,

Oh yeah I remember that now, Norm Macdonald was fired from Saturday night live “for not being funny,” and he found it odd when he was invited back a couple years later to give the opening monologue.

LordOfTheChia, (edited )

The worse thing about that whole ordeal was the hypocrisy.

stewie3128,

It was great when Ohlmeyer went on Colbert Report and got mocked for saying NBC was going to lose money on the Winter Olympics. Colbert did a fund drive to help, and presented him with a giant check for like $5.08

It’s also great that he’s been dead since 2017. Conan was right when he called him one of the silverback gorillas running TV.

WhaleScenery, (edited ) in No politics inteded: Why isn't Trump after leaving office in any way or shape involved in politics say as member of congress or senate?

Unfortunately political systems are often held together with “tradition” and “gentleman’s agreements”, where conventions dictate how people should behave. Politicians typically followed them because it is seen as the honourable and right thing to do.

However, it seems to be a recent trend among the hard right that politicians just ignore those conventions because:

a) those conventions are inconvenient b) honour means nothing to them, and c) nothing actually enforces those unwritten rules - so there are no consequences for ignoring them

Similar things have happened here in the UK as well. I guess our political systems both assume some degree of good will & trust in its representatives, and it generally turns out that trust is misplaced.

0x4E4F,

It’s not typical just for the right around here, the left does it as well. Who does it more… I would speculate they both do equally.

cynar,

Can you give an example? All the ones I’ve seen are either from the (far) right, or a direct reaction to the (far) right bucking traditional rules.

0x4E4F, (edited )

Yes I can. One of the prime ministers we had was convicted but abolished by the president. He was in a left oriented party, the president was in the same one. He didn’t retire from politics, he went on to become our prime minister.

(composed via Google Translate)

cynar,

Unfortunately, that is so stripped down that it’s impossible to analyse it in any reasonable way. It sounds like more run-of-the-mill corruption rather than bucking tradition though. Corruption is a problem of humanity, rather than just one side. Though even that seems a lot more prevalent and egregious in the right, right now.

0x4E4F,

If you want the full story or details, PM me, I’ll disclose the names of the people and thus, the country I live in (which is what I’m trying to hide in this case).

cynar,

I think it says a lot that your only example is either from a country so small that it would help dox you, or with other issues that would overshadow it.

I could, fairly trivially, locate multiple examples of right wing politicians abusing the traditions that support the country’s government. While my own has its issues, I’m not limited to it.

Considering the original post was focused on the US and their current problems, your original comment implied that it applied there. The fact you haven’t offered a single US based example is extremely telling.

Btw, Feel free to PM me the details, if you like.

0x4E4F,

Yes, I live in a small country. No, the examples are not from the US.

PM sent 👍.

cynar,

The example was of the sort of corruption that affects politics everywhere, from a small country, not known for a lack of corruption. The example was also quite old. Predating trumps run at president.

0x4E4F,

Regardless, it was an example of left winged polititians doing exactly what left winged polititians are not supposed to do.

Doesn’t matter of you’re left or right winged around here, they’re all the same, greedy and have no shame for what they did.

cynar,

No-one ever said that left wing politicians are perfect. They are far from it.

The issue is 2-fold. You’ve not shown an example of what was originally discussed (blatant breaking of tradition , with no justification other than “because we can”). It is more normal corruption that creeps into all political systems.

The second is the scale. It’s akin to comparing a school shooting, with dozens of fatalities, to a playground fistfight. Both are bad, but the scale is vastly different. Saying they should both be punished equally would be blatantly absurd.

0x4E4F,

The issue is 2-fold. You’ve not shown an example of what was originally discussed (blatant breaking of tradition , with no justification other than “because we can”). It is more normal corruption that creeps into all political systems.

That’s exactly what I’ve shown. He went on to be a prime minister after being convicted and then abolished by the president, because… well, he can.

Regarding the last paragraph, there are other examples regarding the same polititian (cover ups of a few unexplained murders while he was in office) which is the smoking gun you’re looking for. In the left’s defence, the right did things like this as well.

My standpoint is both sides are, excuse my French, dogshit. Everyone is looking in their best selfinterest, nothing more.

ZeroCool,

Can you give an example?

No, they cannot.

cynar,

I didn’t really expect them to answer. 90% of the time you just get to watch them scuttle off to hide, like cockroaches from the light. 9% of the time you get soundbite diarrhea, which is easy to debunk.

The last 1% can be interesting however. A well thought out counter argument to something I believe. It is a good check, to make sure I’m not the one in the bubble. It also lets me understand those on the other side of a debate. It’s reached the point where 1% is being generous, however.

ChaoticNeutralCzech, (edited ) in Did the pope vote in Argentina's election?

Argentina is the country whose citizenship you cannot legally lose (though dual citizenship is permitted), and they have mandatory* voting. So the Pope is still a citizen of Argentina and did vote or faced charges. I don’t think they allow exceptions.

  • Edit: Not quite true. See replies.
bayta,

It is possible to vote while outside the country by going to designated embassies but if you live outside of the country or are further away than 500km from your legal residence the day of the vote you are not obligated to vote. Also, a lot of people (above 20% on the last election) that should vote don’t despite it being mandatory since that law is pretty much never enforced in practice. Source: I’m Argentinean.

Nibodhika,

Correction, voting is mandatory only for people who live in Argentina, if you live on another country voting is optional. Source: I’m an Argentinian who lives in another country.

WarmSoda,

BigDanishGuy,

I’ve got this.

OP, how do you feel about defecating in an arboreal setting?

intensely_human,

I’m for it

BigDanishGuy,

Welcome to the big ARE YOU ACTUALLY THE POPE quiz!

  1. Are you an Argentinian living abroad?
  2. Do you regularly wear weird head gear?
  3. When visiting a new city. Does your Uber have a large glass cage instead of a rear compartment?
  4. Do strangers keep asking you to hold their children?
  5. Do you have a strange urge to poop when you are near forests?

If you can answer yes to all of the above, you should find the nearest cardinal and observe how you are addressed.

intensely_human,

He’s just tweeting at me. What does it mean??

cashews_best_nut,

Falklands.

LegionEris,

This is fascinating. Assuming he follows the law of the land per the Bible (per my minimal understanding of the Bible…) he would be sinning to note vote. So the pope most likely voted by absentee ballot in Argentina, but also likely has diplomatic immunity in Argentina, and therefore could not be prosecuted for failure to vote.

ChaoticNeutralCzech,

I don’t think you are eligible for diplomatic immunity if you are a citizen. He might choose not to extradite himself but he plans a visit in 2024.

I think he either voted for Sérgio Massa, whom he supported publicly, or symbolically cast a blank ballot. The other options are to declare that he was ill or 500 km from the nearest polling place, or pay a 50-500 peso fine. None of these are off-limits for somebody with a good diplomatic position and a large amount of staff.

Nibodhika,

He can also just not vote, he’s an Argentinian living in another country (just like me) so voting is optional for him.

DasRundeEtwas,

Iven if he can’t get true diplomatic immunity, I don’t think Argentina would trouble a foreign monarch over a 500 peso fine, even if he came back into the country.

ChaoticNeutralCzech,

Yes. I just listed the legal options I found. The law and its enforcement are different things: most domestic non-voters are not punished either, and they are likely going to let him pass even without a formal excuse; it would harm their reputation to be that petty.

probablyaCat,

Not even just a foreign monarch. The pope. In a country with a lot of Catholics. Imagine them trying to arrest the pope. Likely even the police and military would revolt. But you did give me a great idea for an ai image prompt!

cashews_best_nut,

Have you ever been caught by Czech Hunter?

ChaoticNeutralCzech, (edited )

No, I’m too ugly. AI says I look like this and I’m not much prettier IRL. But the number of fake (hidden fee) taxis, Fake Taxis and fake Fake Taxis is larger than the number of honest taxis.

BigDanishGuy,

500 peso fine? How will he ever be able to pay that? /s

According to google 500 argentine peso is 1.43USD

ChaoticNeutralCzech,

The law is apparently old and not enforced. The other consequence is that offenders cannot run for office for 3 years but I doubt they check every municipal candidate. I imagune it could turn up as a minor affair, though.

intensely_human,

Also I spent 5 months with our cyber security guys to try and provide a simple file replication server for my team working in a remote office with shit internet connectivity. I gave up, the spooks put up a solid defense, push all the onerous IT security compliance checking onto my desk instead of taking control.

Not as bad as my previous company though, outsourced IT support to ATOS was a nightmare.

lightnsfw,

Idk about every application but it keeps windows from timing out which serves most purposes for me.

FooBarrington,

Does that keep your status in Teams as “online”? That’s what I use the jiggler for - if I’m waiting for CI tests which take 30+ minutes and I sit in front of the laptop, I don’t want to have to manually jiggle my mouse every couple of minutes just to keep my status.

lightnsfw,

Yep

FooBarrington,

Awesome, thank you!

Works nicely when I’m WFH.

Aceticon,

It’s reasonably easy to make a hardware mouse wiggler with an Arduino Micro (and I don’t mean something that physically moves a mouse, rather something that looks like a USB mouse to the computer and periodically sends mouse movement messages).

If you’re desperate enough, look it up as it’s quite simple so there should be step by step instructions out there.

drudoo,

Absolutely love my Uno keyboard for this keyhive.xyz/shop/uno-single-key-keyboard

Got like 6 commands on a single key and one of them is to press shift every 30seconds so my computer doesn’t lock. Lifesaver.

glue_snorter,

I used a Sidewinder keyboard for years with programmable macros.

Yeah, I had my password as a macro.

Dick move on my part as the macro, I’m fairly sure, is stored in plaintext on the PC. But the convenience was great. I don’t do that any more.

Aceticon,

Yeah, it’s surprisingly simple to get these microcontrollers to become essentially programmable keyboard/mouse emulators, by which point if you’re familiar with the stuff to program them (Arduino being the simplest and most widespread framework) it really just becomes a coding task and you can get it to do crazy stuff.

I suggested an Arduino Micro board because it bypasses the whole hardware side of the problem, but something like what you mention is even simpler.

Painfinity, (edited ) in Which of your favorite creators content quality went downhill very quickly?

Marques Brownlee (a.k.a. MKBHD).

A few weeks ago he posted a new episode of his podcast with him and a few others. They talked about Nothing Chats and Sunbird, the iPhone getting RCS and the usual OpenAI drama. At some point Marques mentions the fact that iMessage with RCS will still be “unencrypted”. Following that they ponder over why RCS wouldn’t have this fabled encryption, such a weird thing that RCS doesn’t support encryption from the get-go, and after brainstorming for a bit someone adds the information that it indeed will be encrypted in-transit, but not end-to-end encrypted. And what comes next boggled my mind: Silence ensues. No-one says anything. You only see the faces of four grown-ass tech influencers that are stunlocked and completely unable to process what this neverheard difference between encryption methods might mean. It all just ends with “I’ve been trying so hard to figure out what that means. I can’t.” And then…then they simply move on, not even addressing for a second this knowledge gap and solving it right there on the spot. You can watch it if you want. What hurts the most is that Marques’ co-star, David, the guy that looks the most confused, made a 1+ hour history-lesson type video a few months ago about the history of the internet and the importance of HTTPS encryption.

Now, if we’re talking about visual quality and overall visual production quality, his videos were insanely enjoyable to watch. I also don’t want to shame anyone for not knowing something and I understand that this is in part the consequence of an ever growing company at this point. The channel is still growing and has reached 18 millions subs. Him (and his team) also cover a constantly growing tech sphere, from phones to laptops, from e-vehicles to supercars, from tech politics to tech blunders. But coming from a guy that has been a “tech influencer” on YouTube for 14 years, a guy that over the years had the chance to interview Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, Bill Gates and Sundar Pichai and surely had the chance to surround himself with experts on all sorts of topics, a guy that dedicated entire videos to Nothing Chats, the role of Quantum Computing in encryption or the dangers and potentials of the Metaverse, this kind of shocked me. I just couldn’t take him seriously anymore and I hate myself for it. But it’s like my grandma not knowing the difference between a normal call and a WhatsApp call, expect that he’s been talking about tech for more than a decade.

dinckelman,

Production quality wise, the videos are always exceptionally well done for a Youtube channel. I just really cannot stand his content.

He markets himself as an unbiased first look channel, but for example, any time a new phone comes out, he’d praise an iPhone for all the same reasons he absolutely fucking decimated an Android phone for. It’s very similar to other products he takes a look at. The podcast is also filled to the brim with similar conversations, and it’s just unpleasant tech-bro culture

Linkerbaan,
@Linkerbaan@lemmy.world avatar

Tbf Mkbhd has never been smart or technical. He has good video editing that’s it. His phone reviews have always been pretty trash too. He kept asking for bigger batteries and now he whines that the phones are too big and heavy.

It really triggers me that he has become the face of “black tech Youtubers” when there’s people like Jeremy Fielding out there

HonorIsDead,

I know very little about electronics and really like Jeremy Fieldings videos. A very good channel.

As for mkbhd. I don’t like his content on Elon musk products. He bought a Tesla and was in a bunch of their beta/early adopter stuff and makes videos with heavy praise. It gives me a bad taste about his ethics on these topics which extends to the rest of the channel.

saunjay1,

Saying he isn’t smart is ridiculous and rude. He very clearly is smart within his particular skillsets and in business, or else we wouldn’t be here talking about him. He’s also subjectively entertaining and relatable, which is why he gets more views than many other tech YouTubers, black or otherwise.

Also, you do realize that “bigger” battery doesn’t necessarily mean physically bigger right? People wanting bigger batteries are usually referring to battery capacity, aka higher charge density.

It’s so weird that you’re triggered by a YouTubers popularity; I wasn’t aware that such homerism existed in that space. Stay triggered though I guess 😂😂🤦🏾‍♂️

Mr_Dr_Oink, (edited )

I dont know about his knowledge, really, but I watched a few videos when shopping for my most recent phone and found his reviews to be a bit shallow and personal, not particularly objective and somewhat biased.

But i would like to say, the number of views a youtuber gets is not directly related to the quality of the entertainment other than it has to appeal to the most people in order to make it. That often leaves a bland taste to the videos. Its true of youtube, of music, of film… or any form of media really. You dont get popular by being extremely talented and nishe.

It is also not directly related to being smart. You only have to look at someone like elon musk to see that. Hes, frankly, an idiot. But he has done very well for himself to a point. Obviously, he’s fallen off now,

Fact is, not agreeing that Marquis is a good youtuber is not equal to being triggered, and its kind of ironic coming from the white knighr who cam running to his defence on a fairly obscure message board. :)

CertifiedBlackGuy,

FlossyCarter is my go to for phone reviews. He does a lot of stuff I don’t care about, but he does the “release review” that all tech youtubers do when they get sent a device, but then he follows up with a “real review” later and his likes/dislikes are often fair critiques.

pineapplelover,

I know I’m going to get downvoted to absolute hell for this but I kinda don’t like anybody who is an Apple fanboy. I used to be one like 5 years ago, however, I know have a pixel+graphene phone, arch linux laptop and desktop, selfhosted storage and media server, basically the tech nerd setup. I hate for the top YouTubers to be not a tech nerd but someone who promotes Apple fanboys who will just roll with the punches even if the company does something stupid.

Anyways, thanks for the channel recommendation. If you haven’t watched Colin Furze yet, his shit is wild as well.

I know of those who understand tech very well and still own Apple products. I don’t know who to hate more. I just don’t like the fanboys in general. Either they know of the shitty practices or not and still got the whole apple watch, iphone, ipad, macbook, imac setup. They’re just so stuck in the ecosystem that they’ll never come out.

    Painfinity, (edited )

Well, he’s played a role in getting me and I’m sure many others interested in tech in the first place (remember the OnePlus One days?). So I’d say he has a bit more going for him than just video editing, he summarizes tech really well and he just…sparks that tech passion in his viewers! But I simply can’t believe that in all these years he never stopped and pondered what in-transit encryption vs. end-to-end encryption might mean!

To hammer my point home: This means he doesn’t understand why people would use Signal instead of sending a DM on Facebook or Instagram. Why any sane mind would pick Proton Mail over something like standard Gmail. He’s absolutely clueless as to what a data breach into popular password managers like Bitwarden or LastPass might mean. When Apple says things like (and imagining this in Tim Cook’s voice makes it a hundred times better) “What stays on your iPhone, stays on your iPhone.” or “end-to-end encrypted, meaning that not even Apple can access it”, he doesn’t understand any of it and just moves on. And mind you, these are Apple presentations we’re talking about, catered to the simple understanding of an average consumer.

Yes, naturally everyone has to start somewhere, but I wish him and his team (c’mon guys, I KNOW you’ll read this!) would put a bit more effort into fillling knowledge gaps as soon as they come up, instead of just relying on their selective research each time a new video gets made and arrogantly thinking that in all other aspects they must still be ahead of 99% of all other people. Don’t take my word for it, see for yourself: After one of his co-hosts asks people watching the podcast to tweet at him to explain it, Marques replies: “Good luck getting a tweet.”

But hey, I hope these are only the first of many steps they’ll take in the big world of data protection, transparency, open-source, privacy and, of course, encryption ;)

P.s. sorry for the wall of…text.

    Edit: clarification at the beginning.

    someguy3,

He never struck me as being actually knowledgable about tech. He knows the consumer level stuff, just enough to review things. But anything deeper than that he never touches.

    Thermal_shocked,

Feeling I got too, just consumer level stuff and pretty videos.

    Chriswild,

He seems most knowledgeable about cameras and filming but he uses mostly Macs so I wouldn’t expect much computer wise.

    pete_the_cat,

I stopped watching him about 7 years back.

    frozencat,

    he’s a apple shill mkbhd

    Why9,

    He’s really not.

    dangblingus,

He’s not an organic tech reviewer. All of his devices are sponsored. He exists in a completely different world than the vast majority of his audience. Money is not an object for him and he promotes always having day 1 tech. He essentially shills for whomever is giving him today’s device to review and he’s been very pro-Apple in his editorializing.

    Why9,

He’s not an organic tech reviewer. All of his devices are sponsored. He exists in a completely different world than the vast majority of his audience. Money is not an object for him and he promotes always having day 1 tech.

That’s true to some extent, I guess.

I’ve always thought his approach has remained broadly consistent to his roots (I’ve been subbed to him since he was much, much smaller) but yes, the products he reviews now are almost always provided to him rather than being bought by him personally. This becomes true of any channel of his size, but I’ve not seen his opinion change as a result.

He addresses the topic about bias in this short , but we can look to his phone of the year awards to assess his biases objectively. For every year since the awards began in 2014, an Android device has always won Phone of the Year. An iPhone has never won an award for Best design, Best Value or Best Big Phone since records began either.

iPhones have won best camera system since 2018, but he maintains that this is due to the superior video capabilities of iPhones, but still prefers the ‘look’ of a Pixel photo, or the hardware of a Samsung (20x zoom etc). Androids dominate every single category simply because there are so many companies developing and competing against each other to make better and better Android devices.

Marques is personally almost always rocking a Pixel or Samsung Galaxy device as his main daily driver (because he loves the customisation and the freedom that android devices give him), and has an iPhone in his other pocket for apple things. He calls out bad Android and Apple devices in equal measure, and he actively advised against buying a newer Mac because the M2 and M3 products just don’t give you enough of an upgrade over M1 to make it worthwhile.

I watch every single video he puts out and just don’t see the Apple shill thing. He has always come across as an Android fan to me, but I hear the Apple shill thing all the time.

JackiesFridge, in Which items/products were you once able to get from local shops on a whim that you now more or less have to order online?
    @JackiesFridge@lemmy.world avatar

Electronic parts. There used to be several local shops and a Radio Shack where you could go in and just buy basic electronic components (capacitors, resistors, photocells, transistors, breadboards, potentiometers, you name it). They phased all of that out in favour of toys and trinkets before just folding.

Now I have to order on Mouser or Digikey and wait. Sure there’s WAY more variety, but I miss being able to just run & grab something I might have forgotten (or, let’s be honest, fried somehow).

    schmidtster,

So glad we still have a few of those kicking around in our city, but they just can’t compete unfortunately.

I try supporting local, but I’m not spending 25% more just to do that.

    Dedh,

I’d say 400% + is a more realistic cost of buying components local vs. online. Regardless, I miss having the local option even tho I can actually get most parts delivered faster than it used to take me to drive to Fry’s & back.

Never had the chance to see a Fry’s but yeah, a number of things that I’d desperately need on short notice are overly marked up.

Then again, I guess I’d take a markup than waiting a few days for shipping if I’m on the cusp of finishing a project.

I miss Fry’s too. Got so much cool stuff there before online shopping was safe and convenient.

But they totally dropped the ball. The weird disconnect between their brick and mortar store and their online store, the constant out of stocks that was the norm, even over a decade ago. Not to mention the “sticker of death” on all the returned product they put back on the shelf.

LastYearsPumpkin, in My beagle has suddenly started resource guarding random stuff. What should I do to get this behavior to stop?

You are getting some dangerous advice in this thread that can make things worse.

You already have a bite, that’s a huge sign that you have escalated past the normal behavior stuff. Talk to a professional, talk to a local organization, like the local humane society, respected training center, or your vet, and get some real advice.

    Vilian,

that’s why ask for a professional advice

    Kaliax,

Professional advice is the best route to go. In the meantime there is a wonderful YT channel called “No Bad Dogs” out of NYC I believe. Their approach is full-spectrum regarding positive reinforcement, positive punishment, etc. Also, one of the main ways I work with my (non-abused puppies & not a professional) with resource guarding is as follows: grab a low-value and high-value item. Give the dog the low-value item, tell them “out” after a short time (no touching/forcing), the moment they drop it say “yes” and give them the high-value item. Do this randomly, short and sweet. Best of luck.

BackOnMyBS, in Who in your opinion is the modern day equivalent to Mozart?
    @BackOnMyBS@lemmy.world avatar

ITT: people who have severely underestimated Mozart’s musical capacities and contributions.

Mozart is a musician that is studied by nearly any professional musician. There are historians, musical scholars, and museums dedicated to him. He’s a household name across the world. He established a period of music. As a teenager, he deciphered a 12 min choral piece with multiple groups and solos after hearing it once and by memory wrote it down later that night (he heard it a 2nd time a few days later for minor corrections). When he presented the score to the clergy, they said he got one note wrong. After investigation, Mozart heard it right. The musician’s score was off by a note. Could any popular musician mentioned here decipher just a 6 min song of 4 instrument band after hearing it once with pen and paper ready? Imagine telling any music legend now, “Hey, you’re off by a half a step on the 3rd note of bar 28 of your own song.”

Comparing an awesome popular singer, guitarist, or band to him is like comparing your friend that got a job at NASA to Einstein. There is no modern Mozart. There have been greats since Mozart, but there haven’t been any Mozarts since Mozart. I say this as a Beethoven fan. Mozart was the only Mozart. He was so good, that his name became a title for great musician: Mozart. No one listed in this thread is anywhere near being a Mozart.

    CthuluVoIP,

Likely the closest I could picture in a modern sense is Jacob Collier, who can indeed perform these types of musical feats. But the crux of the issue is that while Collier is much loved, he isn’t a dominant force of popular music like Mozart was.

    jbk,

What if some or most of those details were made up to sound nicer / more impressive?

    myfavouritename,

Yeah, that’s exactly my first thought while reading this. If I rewrote the list of achievements above to sound like I was claiming they all happened to me, and then posted it to twitter, it would be indistinguishable from most other “🙄 that happened” posts.

People will be saying similar stuff about Taylor Swift in 100 years; by definition being legendary means being unreal.

    niktemadur, (edited )

When you put it that way, the list of candidates thins out and the one figure I see still standing is John Coltrane, who in his day was running circles around fellow jazz musicians, they couldn’t wrap their heads around how Coltrane’s chord progressions and jumping between keys from note to note made any sense… yet it did, and beautifully.

    EDIT: typo

    PrinceWith999Enemies,

I agree, and this is easily my favorite post of the month.

    Chrobin,

Honestly, I could see Jacob Collier doing just that.

foggy, (edited ) in What is an obscure piece of media or videogame that you think nobody else here has heard of?

I got this. Someone, please prove me wrong. I’ll PayPal you $82.76 if you find this.

There’s a cartoon from the 80s (could be late 70snor early 90s) called Howard The Duck.

You’ll never find it, because of the wildly popular movie bearing the same name.

The “Howard the duck” I’m referring to was a cartoon movie that was about a Mallard duck who got separated from his flock while they were migrating south for the winter.

Howard finds himself in NYC for the winter, where he spends time with rats and frogs. They show him around NYC via the sewers.

There’s a scene where they’re beneath the world trade center and Howard and the frog marvel at is enormity. Then, the frog reminds Howard that “Nothing lasts forever; especially in New York.” (This is an exact quote, sparing punctuation.)

The VHS I had ended with a music video by some band with the word “dogs” (junk yard dogs? Something like that) in their band name. The music video was trippy AF. There was barking in the song. The visuals were mostly patterns of colorful circles.

Like, this sounds like a fever dream, but if you’ve seen it and can locate it, it will make sense. I swear.

My memory is shit but I’d describe the art style as watercolor. Animated watercolor. Fro the 80s. So, yeah. Sorry.

    Fuck it. $20.

    Fuckit 2: 4 payments of $20.69

    maxprime,

I wonder if you’ve got the title wrong?

    JDubbleu,

I’m usually excellent at finding shit like this and I got nothing in half an hour. I’m high as fuck rn tho so I’ll be trying again tomorrow because I’m officially invested. If I do by some miracle find it (I’m pretty convincing I won’t) send the money to a FOSS project of your choice, or your favorite Lemmy instance.

    fmstrat,

    Too late 😆

    edwardbear,

yep. 2 hours lost. can’t find a shred of evidence. some random blogs I’ve scrolled mention something about the “Other Howard the Duck”, archived content from 1986, but that could just be a mention of marvel comics. i’m officially interested though.

    foggy, (edited )

I respect an appreciate your effort.

I will someday inherit my parents nonsense and find the VHS amongst the masses and update this post (This is a lie).

If it helps, a place the frog takes Howard is a famous theater in NYC. that’s like a quarter of the whole short film.

I know this doesn’t help, but throughout this movie the sound effect of the ducks flying is just a person breathing with a small open mouth, swiping their tongue left to right. Do it, and you’ll get it.

    TheMinions,

    (This is a lie)

    I respect it.

    Thunderbird4,

Furthermore, I believe this cartoon is an adaptation of a Russian story/cartoon from 1948 called Little Grey Neck. It doesn’t take place in a city, but the premise is very similar, where a young duck misses its migration and has to befriend the other winter animals to survive.

    SpaghettiYeti,

I’m still trying, but I found this gem and I just had to share: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Down_and_Dirty_Duck

    The plot:

Willard Isenbaum, a lonely insurance man with wild sexual fantasies, decides to ask out the new secretary, Susie, whom he has only known for a day and to whom he has never spoken. He spends the entire morning before work fantasizing about having sex with her, but his attempts to approach her fail. His female boss sends him to investigate a claim filed by Painless Martha, an aging tattoo artist, who works in the city. Martha believes in a Ouija board message saying that she will be “killed by a bomb delivered by a wizard on Tuesday”.

When Willard tells her that the insurance company will not pay until her death, she dies of a heart attack [after an explosion noise]. Her will stipulates that her killer must take care of her duck. After the duo spend a night in jail, the duck takes Willard to a brothel. After a wild night of partying, they wind up in the desert, where the duck dresses Willard in women’s clothing in an attempt to get a ride. After several encounters with an old prospector dying of thirst, a racist police officer, a lesbian couple, and a short Mexican “bandito”, they are finally picked up by a trucker.

Back at his apartment, Willard creates a makeshift sex object, which the duck eats. Shortly after, Willard discovers that the duck is female, and has sex with her. The following morning, Willard and the duck go to Willard’s job, where Willard has sex with his female boss and quits his job shortly after. Willard and the duck leave, and the movie ends with Willard saying that the duck was a good duck after all.>
