pelya, in Why are Some Apps Updated Daily?

Because someone in the dev team had the time to hook up their continuous integration scripts with Play Store publishing API, to the despair and jealosity of dev teams of all other apps.

This is how software should be managed. You make a change to your software, push one extra button, and in one hour all your users receive it.

Non-technical explanation: because they can.

JustSomePerson,

Financial explanation: Because it's cheaper to have all your users as involuntary testers, than to actually ensure app quality in-house.

pelya,

In case of open-source projects like Fairemail, your budget is very likely zero or in negatives. Very often it’s one or few developers who make the app basically for their own daily use, and publish it on a ‘use at your own risk’ basis for everyone else. So yeah, if you use any open-source software, please do some testing work if you want it to improve.

magic_lobster_party,

Continuous deployment pipelines usually have lots of automatic testing ensuring nothing breaks for the user.

key,
@key@lemmy.keychat.org avatar

“usually” is very generous. Automated testing takes effort to develop and maintain, a lot more than the rest of the CICD pipeline combined. And it’s only one piece of a complete qa strategy, if it’s all you have you’re still using users as testers.

Restaldt, (edited )

QA is not a capitalizable expense or something anyways that’s why we havent given you a decent raise since you got promoted

Now get back to working your 3 jobs you software engineering qa testing devops piece of … valued member of the team

PM_Your_Nudes_Please,

If Putin loses an arm, all of his doppelgängers will need to lose an arm too. Otherwise they’ll be immediately identified as doppelgängers.

It’s a pretty well known thing that Putin frequently uses lookalikes for public appearances. It’s apparently an old habit from when he was a KGB agent. So if someone snipes him from a rooftop, it’s probably not even him; He can claim to have miraculously survived the shooting, then carry on as if nothing happened.

ImpossibilityBox, (edited ) in What's a secret that you're keeping from your partner/significant other that you're taking to the grave with you?

My wife and I were (emphasis on WERE) raised in very religious circles and as such we were “saving ourselves” for marriage at the beginning of our relationship. I was already drifting away from the religious world and thought this practice was dumb but loved her enough for innumerable other reasons that I would go through basically whatever to wait for her.

4 years into our 7 year dating relationship I was very stupid and ended up having a drunken three way with two of her best friends in a public park. Long story. My S.O. never found out from any of us.

One of the women contacted me nearly a decade later drunk and crying in order to confess that she had gotten pregnant from the encounter and had gotten an abortion with her parents help but never told anyone else.

My wife and I dated for 7 years and have been married for just short of 9 years. I moved us to the other side of the country for work to limit the possible interactions with her former friends, and encouraged her in many ways to have as large a friend group as possible in our new life to curtail the desire to reach out to our old group. New address and new phone numbers to make it more difficult for people to find us out of the blue. This will never see the light of day in our relationship.

I love my wife to the ends of the earth and back, this is the one thing (other than the consistency of my bowel movements) I will ever keep from her.

banneryear1868,

Store bought laminated dough is perfectly fine and freezes well. I don’t mind making it because I find it’s just a few minutes every so often, but I was lucky enough to learn the technique such that I don’t have to think about it. Use case for making your own is you can use a specific flour or butter and fresh baked pastry is the best.

  • Applied Science - In depth videos about random science-y things this dude finds interesting. No clickbait, just an excited dude talking about a project he tried.
  • Atomic Frontier - A lot like Tom Scott. He’s also a rare case where the video is more interesting than the title/thumbnail. Generally focused on science-y topics + has shockingly high production value considering the dude seems to be an overworked college student.
  • NileRed/NileBlue - Crazy in depth chemistry videos. Personally find NileBlue more entertaining as he tends to explore things he’s not that great at.
  • Practical Engineering - Explanations of various civil engineering concepts.

  • Mark Rober - Nasa engineer explaining science to kids with great editing
  • William Osman - Collaboration expert, you will see him in all the other channels mentioned above.

I’m actually subscribed to almost all of those channels lmao. I skipped several because I’m being picky, and I mean picky. You probably won’t agree with a lot of my decisions. Here’s what I mean…

  • I did a thing - forgot about him I’ll add him to the list
  • Micheal Reeves - Last real video was a year ago
  • Backyard scientist - Unsubscribed a while ago due to clickbait. From a quick glance his videos seem fine now though.
  • Mark Rober - Video quality has been going downhill. More and more clickbait, and videos seem to spend a lot more time than necessary on "look at our happy family fun time we’re having."
  • William Osman - I like him just not enough to put him on the list

They all do a podcast called safety third, I watched it for a while but I stopped cus the content feels really lazy. And when I realized most of them have slowed down their main channel video output a ton like Osman and NileRed and Reeves I just got bored of the lot. Like their videos are all dumb shit like “i gave a snake legs” and it’s the most half assed 3d printed shit the barely works and they just act like teenage boys the entire video, then look at view count and it gets millions of views. Kinda starts to feel dumb and more like youtube celebrity shit than actual quality maker content, sorta pisses me off a little seeing them get so much money making like 1 video every 6 months where they build literal garbage. And they sorta brag about it in their podcast. It sorta feels like they are slowly slipping into more cringry content like trash-taste kinda stuff and im just not into it anymore.

It’s not about them possibly being gay, it’s about them making a statement of derision about trans/gay people and the discomfort of the public display making it funny to like minds.

A_Random_Idiot, (edited ) in Why are there so many apps that could be websites?

most apps are just websites wrapped inside a container and made an app.

Why?

Because they dont want you to use the actual website.

why?

Cause your browser gives you a LOT of protection against invasive data mining/profiling/tracking/etc.(Not saying its perfect, We all know about fingerprinting and HTML5 canvas tracking and what have you…but its a LOT better than the information that apps can steal)

Data mining/profiling/tracking/etc that these companies want to do to you, because you are a product to them, not a customer.

And how do they do that with an app?

Permissions.

Ever wonder why your pizza ordering app has to have access to your contacts, data storage, camera, microphone, etc etc etc? Its not because its needed for you to order pizzas. Hell, you can do that on a website with no permissions, so why is it needed for an app on your phone?

So they can steal/mine your data for profiling/tracking/marketing/being sold to others/etc.

ininewcrow, in What are some tech predictions for 2024 that actually could happen?
@ininewcrow@lemmy.ca avatar

That tech will regress due to the greed of tech corporations.

Tech is regulated by the big corporations that consistently either throttle innovation or degrade what already is established because they all want to figure out how to squeeze as much profit out of everything possible while blocking or preventing anything new that might compete with them.

Any new innovation that will occur will be military and will either have a machine gun attached to it or can deliver a high explosive.

One potential regression that I see is that the current generative models are abandoned, after being ruled as “infringing copyrights” by multiple countries. The tech itself won’t disappear but it’ll be considerably harder to train newer ones.

The most problematic part is however if one of them survives; likely Google. That would lead to a situation as in your second paragraph.

CosmoNova,

Law makers will start treating the open source community like pirates because they make LLMs freely available for anyone to run at home. And sure you can debate whether it’s theft or not but you know that’s not why regulations go after them. Meanwhile the mass theft of corporations will be deemed „ethical“ use because they „own“ the data they use. Lobbyism will likely make sure of that I‘m afraid.
