kromem, in We must record everything

The irony being that the surviving records of antiquity are literally just predominantly the royal propaganda because those were carved into stone which lasted and other writing formats didn’t survive.

The guy carving into the rock here in reality was doing so at the bidding of a guy who would have killed him if he didn’t write the version of reality he wanted recorded.

The idea that what was written down could be instantly disputed and checked against facts at all is the part this dude would find unbelievable.

Then the printing press fragmented and diluted the power of the elites. For example, I believe that it’s no coincidence that Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation came very soon after Gutenberg; in fact, I believe it was inevitable.

EDIT: well what do you know… it was Martin Luther himself who translated the famous Gutenberg Bible. Talk about one degree of Kevin Bacon.

Huh? The Gutenberg Bible is a Latin vulgate edition, and it was printed three decades before Luther was even born.

niktemadur, (edited )

Google threw the following text at me:

Yes, Martin Luther did translate the Gutenberg Bible from Latin, Hebrew, and Greek into German. His translation was then printed at a high number and distributed in 1534. This was one of the first times that the Bible became accessible for the masses in their own language.

So I misunderstood the time jump.

Yeah, cuneiform was interesting in terms of the medium and how much and how broadly it survived. Their folk tale in terms of how they received the writing was that someone from the ocean arrived and was trying to communicate and pressed reeds into the wet mud.

I sometimes wonder if there was an Aegean earlier Bronze Age/prehistory writing system (like the one found on the Dispilio tablet) that has been lost to the ages because it was on a temporary medium and then the Sumerians ended up with a version of writing that persisted in a loosely similar way to their folk history.

Konstant, in "Outdoor Cat vs Indoor Cat" by Sarah Andersen

Forgot to mention the little animals the outdoor cat kill along the way.

chiliedogg,

You see all the scattered feathers in the second lane?

We should keep all predators inside. Birds, lions, alligators, etc.

Toneswirly, in "Outdoor Cat vs Indoor Cat" by Sarah Andersen

My cat’s quality of life was dogshit indoors. She had bad allergic reactions all the time, would stop eating, Vet bills piled up with no explanations. I let her roam the neighborhood now, shes happy as a pig in shit. Her weight is stable, shes not breaking out in rashes all the time, and she entertains the neighbors. Cry me a river about all the mice and bunnies she kills.

Grayox,
@Grayox@lemmy.ml avatar

YOU are directly responsible for the extinction of animals. I hope you are proud of yourself.

“Cats have contributed to the extinction of 63 species of birds, mammals, and reptiles in the wild”

Toneswirly,

Cool, but my cat has nothing on me as a human. Just by living you contribute to the death of millions, by your own logic. Are you gonna feel bad about that?

Grayox,
@Grayox@lemmy.ml avatar

No, not as long as I’m trying to be a part of the solution, instead of being proud about being a part of the problem.

calavera,

YOU, as a human, are infinitely more responsible for hundreds of extinct species so stfu

Grayox,
@Grayox@lemmy.ml avatar

You do realize Humans are the one who spread cats across the globe right? The extinctions caused by outdoor pet and stray cats wouldn’t have happened if human’s hadnt have brought them with them you absolute ham sandwich.

willis936, in "Outdoor Cat vs Indoor Cat" by Sarah Andersen

A stranger outdoor cat just walked with me for a few blocks on my way home from a dinner party. It was fun to have a five minute feline friend. It’s sad to know they will very likely die long before my indoor cat of a similar age.

kofe,

You just made me realize I haven’t seen the sweet ol girl by my buddy’s place in a while and now I’m sad :(

nowwhatnapster,

Fwiw my childhood indoor/outdoor cat lived to 19 whereas my indoor only cats got terminal cancer at 13. But generally speaking I believe you are correct.

Model railroading is a fun hobby that combines a ton of various hobbies into one.

Posts of the hobby include researching historical things and visiting places to research, painting detailed backgrounds and models, electronic circuitry, tiny mechanics, wood working, sculpting, and many more skills I can’t think of.

It doesn’t have to expensive depending on how you go about it.

Try to draw each platonic solid inside metatrons cube without using a step by step guide.

Its surprisingly difficult till you get a more intuitive understanding of it.

It may not sound like it can give purpose but the flower of life pattern at its core is connected to almost al known human religions, including the ancient ones.

calavera, in "Outdoor Cat vs Indoor Cat" by Sarah Andersen

Wow, today I learned people think it’s better for the cats to keep they locked in… I pity birds who have that kind of life, now I pity those cats too

glimse,

Now today you can learn that outdoor cats kill wildlife for fun. You can also learn that outdoor cats have half the life expectancy as indoor cats

calavera, (edited )

What’s that point of living more? You’d prefer to live more in a cage? That’s not a point at all. I can understand the wildlife reasoning, but then we should just forbid cats in those places then

dudinax,

Imagine getting a highly evolved killer as a pet, perfectly tuned for a life of exploration, combat and death, and forcing them to live a long, soft boring life.

sphfaar,
@sphfaar@lemmy.world avatar

It is not their habitat, from experience I have had many cats, and in my opinion it is better to be able to leave them free so that they can go in and out without going where it needs to be clean.

seathru,

Agreed. All the strays are heartbreaking, they deserve homes!

lvxferre,
@lvxferre@mander.xyz avatar

Accordingly to my cat (and apparently Sarah Andersen’s), this is a reliable way to give a stray a new home:
https://us-a.tapas.io/c/46/a04126c7-b6b3-4724-8782-9deba54a6ce6.jpg
I’m not too eager to trust her biased sampling though.

[Serious now, we should be more active on that. Also to discourage people from letting cats to “take a walk” unsupervised.]

seathru,

Can confirm. Cats always choose you, but sometimes it’s more forcefully. This big boy busted through an open window, used the liter box, and proclaimed himself king.

Mine was hiding herself in my garage. At least the younger one, Siegfrieda; our old lady Kika was adopted almost like you would adopt a dog, but from a home owner instead of a pet shop. (Her mum’s owner took a bit too long to spay her cat.)

cashews_best_nut,

Depends on the country.

glimse,

Depends on if you live on a farm or not*

It’s not like European outdoor cats don’t murder wildlife and get killed

tamal3, in Sleeping position

Has anyone tried this? odditymall.com/arm-slot-mattress-designed-for-sid… Looks like the skot would rub your armpit to shreds, but I like the idea.

Peppycito,

I like the idea too, but you have to buy proprietary bed sheets.

Allero, (edited )

I didn’t, but I feel this will create more problems than it will solve

Hands are either able to freely move, but inside a narrow space, which will traumatize them and extend muscles, or they are squeezed between the chamber walls and those kind-of-filler-pillows, restraining motion.

Also, those who market it as a phone-comfortable bed clearly forget that phones and large narrow holes are a terrible combo. Oh, and for God’s sake, forget about ever eating ANYTHING on there.

tamal3,

That’s probably an accurate analysis. It’s hard to believe that with all the time we spend sleeping we haven’t figured out a way to do it comfortably.

Maybe suspend me in a vat of liquid?

Allero, (edited )

There’s quite a lot of issues with that, too.

First, breathing. For starters, you shouldn’t drown, for which you either have to be strongly fixed in a position with face up out of the liquid (which will be super uncomfy), or you should depend on oxygen mask (which is very dangerous when you’re unconscious during sleep)

Second, skin breathes too - and in liquids, the pores close and skin can’t breathe - which will eventually lead to hypoxia even if you breathe normally.

Third, skin gets irritated and damaged at prolonged contact (like, you know, 8 hours of sleep a day) with just about any liquid. It should be insanely inert.

Fourth - the thermal conductivity of such liquid should ideally be the same as air - too much (which is just about any liquid) would be harmful for your body’s thermal regulation and, again, for skin, too little would make you overheat.

Fifth - you need a liquid in which you can be suspended, which is impossible to precisely measure since our buoyancy constantly changes due to us breathing, and our breathing patterns change as we move between phases of sleep.

TL;DR - There’s a reason all those vats are part of sci-fi: as cool as they look, they are insanely impractical.
