    No kidding, childhood is the free trial for life.

    recarsion, (edited )

    But you can’t opt out after the free trial ends and if you got bad RNG or messed up you get to take the L for 80 years.

    KpntAutismus,

    mostly, but having bad parents is like getting thrown into hardcore mode without ever playing the game before

    Aurenkin,

    It’s fun because you get to spend early adulthood patching yourself up enough to pass for a functional human being then later in life you get to have the fun of all the duct tape you used to hold yourself together coming loose before you’re forced to confront the actual issues and heal properly (if you’re lucky).

    Or so I’ve heard.

    It’s a (to me anyway) very amusing cheap ripoff of Hungry, Hungry Hippos. Which is a fast-paced game that you wouldn’t recreate with turtles.

    Education and wisdom are two separate stats, this guy didn’t roll very high on Wis.

    cooopsspace,

    Intelligence and wisdom.

    Intelligence is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is knowing not to put it in a fruit salad.

    FlyingSquid,
    @FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

    In the U.S., education is mostly about being able to regurgitate what you’ve been told. Wisdom is, as you suggested, not necessary for that.

    MellowSnow,

    Unfortunately so. There should be more emphasis on the why and how rather than the what.

    Syrc,

    In the U.S., education is mostly about being able to regurgitate what you’ve been told.

    Wait, are there places where it’s not?

    I don’t know. I’ve only been to school in the U.S.

    OutlierBlue, in Truly inspirational

    He lost a lot of weight and all it took was daily malicious bullying?! How inspirational.

    chumbalumber, (edited )

    It’s not necessarily malicious – given general humour in this country, it’s likely he wanted to lose weight and asked his friend to text him that daily as a form of motivation.

    Edit: however, I’d like to point out that consensually being sent that by a friend is fundamentally different to having abuse thrown at you by a stranger on the internet for your body shape.

    Civil War between these regions — who would win?

    pruwybn,
    @pruwybn@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

    No Toes comes in at the most states with 25, including Texas, and the highest population at 139 million. Second is Animal Toes with 11 states and 93 million people, California being a big help there. Florida and New York help get the seven Toes states into 3rd with 75 million, and the last seven Shoes states, with no highly populous states, come in at 27 million.

    Not saying this is all that would determine the winner of a war, I just wanted to see what the numbers look like.

    TrueStoryBob, in Improvise. Adapt. Overcome.

    My Nephew: “What’s a fax machine?”

    Me: “A landline network of low quality printers people used to use to do invoices and file for divorce.”

    My Nephew: “Landline?”

    jubilationtcornpone,

    So my oldest kid was grounded from her iPhone one time. Feeling generous one evening, I told her she could use the desk phone in my office to call friends on. It’s an old school red landline with no frills. Just buttons to dial the number and an actual bell that rings. The kind that’s only an upgrade from a rotary disl. It’s mostly for emergencies and never gets used.

    Anyway, she sits down at the desk, stares at the phone, and is like, “Ok. What do I do?” It took me a second to realize she was asking how to make a phone call. I told her to pick up the handset and dial the phone number. The whole time she’s just shooting me looks like she doesn’t believe this is actually going to work.

    cleek,

    And the name of the kid: Albert Einstein

    Octopus1348,
    @Octopus1348@lemy.lol avatar

    Is she used to contacts and doesn’t know how to dial a phone number even on a smartphone? Or just unsure because it works a little different.

    Plopp,

    What’s a phone number?

    Thteven,
    @Thteven@lemmy.world avatar

    All I get is ads and scam calls, might as well disable the phone app at this point.

    v81,

    Sounds like she’s rarely out never noticed you use it either… Which makes it interesting both because of the uncommon UI and workflow, and she has not had regular observations to learn from.

    For those of us that have operated both it’s a non issue.

    But think of how you’d go about it with zero knowledge. I bet most would try dialling the number without lifting the receiver.
