MTK, in An unbiased comparison of linux distributions' setup

Me being an arch using vegan with a man-bun makes this feel like a personal attack.

But once I get my new arch setup working I’ll install gimp on it and create a meme making fun of you!

kautau, (edited )

And you’ll finally get your sound working on your new laptop after weeks of messing with pulse audio and realizing you just needed to install sof-firmware but didn’t scroll far enough in the wiki to see that, but now your pulse audio config is so messed up it’s just easier to reinstall Arch again

Source: my life

AeonFelis,

Installing sound on Arch is really easy:

  1. Install ALSA
  2. Install Pulse
  3. Spend half an hour trying to get the sound test to work with various parameters
  4. Realize the default sink is set to USB audio and you don’t have a USB audio device
  5. Google how to change the default sink
  6. Change the default sink

    I’m vegan for health reasons and I have yet to meat one of the infamous vegans the stereotype portrays. I ask questions, look for recipes, etc, and everyone has been super nice. I think “those vegans” live primarily on Twitter and Reddit.

    PS: I’ve had a working Linux system in daily use since I started back with Red Hat Halloween and I prefer Debían based installs like Pop!_OS and Mint D. Nothing against Arch but I ain’t got time to fight the OS as well as my work.

    EDIT: The typo stays.

    Faresh,

    This is very likely my very environmentally influenced view, but I think there was a period of time where being vegan was a trend among the health hipsters, who weren’t vegan due to ethics, but because either everyone else was doing it or because they claim it has massive health benefits like they did for paleo, keto or other diets. Those I think could indeed fit that stereotype. Or maybe I’m living in a fairy tale.

    otp,

    They’re also on Lemmy. I haven’t been here long, but I’ve already seen 2.

    One is right here in another comment chain, lol

    captainlezbian,

    I’ve met one or two. It’s like fine, it’s a major lifestyle change often associated with ethics that sets you aside from most of society. Many folks have a period of a few months to a year or two of being really annoying about shit like that. It happens with all sorts of folks: linux and arch users, freshly out queer people, people getting into polyamory, new converts to religions… frankly atheists and people who just converted to Christianity are the worst about it in my experience. And yeah these people are annoying. You’ve been annoying too I’m sure, we all have, it’s part of being a person and the people being annoying about these things are typically doing so at an age where some variant of that is a common experience

    jacobc436,

    I’ve been annoying? I’VE BEEN ANNOYING?!? I take offense of your liberal use of the past tense, Captain.

    I hear ya though. I guess I’ve been lucky in my interactions, but the memes make it seem like it’s constant and ever present with vegans, and that doesn’t match with my experience outside of the Internet.

    Samsy,

    Yeah, that’s too much.

    I eat chicken, btw.

    Just_Pizza_Crust,

    Part of being vegan is understanding you’ll be mocked and criticized for completely unrelated things. Like Bubly sparkling water or blue denim, for example.

    Sooo when was the last time you had dog?

    LemmysMum, (edited )

    You mean a form of life that I give better care and affection to than they would receive in the wild? About the same time I had a house plant.

    I’ll let you guess which one I don’t have anymore because I realised I lacked the skills and capacity to care for it adequately. Hint: it wasn’t the dog.

    When was the last time you made direct statements instead of disingenuous leading questions?

    Zacryon,

    You mean a form of life that I give better care and affection to than they would receive in the wild?

    No. The last time you ate dog.

    By the way, there are not many dogs in the wild. There wouldn’t be many dogs at all if we wouldn’t breed them.

    When was the last time you made direct statements instead of disingenuous leading questions?

    Regularly. Yesterday before I went to bed must have been the last time. But I tend to make exceptions when I smell narrow-minded condscending bullshit.

    How is your equal respect for vegetables and meat reflected in your daily actions and decisions, also – but not only – considering your diet?

    You probably don’t eat dog, do you? If not, how is that not hypocritical? The one animal you eat, the other you don’t. So much for an equal respect and treatment.

    Even if, how do you respect the life of the meat you eat? Do you care for each cow yourself? Do you make sure that they are not bred for efficiency, neither having pain nor experiencing fear, live in absolute freedom until they die a natural death and only then you eat their remains?

    I mean, do the people at the fediverse really talk mainly about Linux? I see in both Lemmy and Mastodon more people talking about US politics, LGBTQ+ stuff and furrys (lmao) than anything related to technology in general. I guess the kind of content someone sees would depend a lot on the instance someone creates their account in?

    Waker, (edited )

    I see some Linux but I’m subscribed to a lot of techy communities. Self host, programming etc. So it’s kinda normal.

    Could be the default view on each instance… On my first account I subbed to a lot of different communities on different instances so I saw all the crap. Eventually due to all the politics bullshit I just migrated to my current instance which has hexbear and lemmygrad blocked so it’s been a lot better.

    But even so, I always see a bunch of politics crap on the memes community.

    autumn64,
    @autumn64@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

    Yeah I also do see a lot more content of the communities I’m subbed to than of the instance I created my account in.

    panda_paddle, (edited )

    It feels like every 3rd post for me. But it doesn’t really bother me.

    edit Went ahead and scrolled past this post, counting how many Linux memes I saw. About 3 out of every 10.

    Unforeseen,

    Hopefully all the different clients will soon support good blocking. With connect for android I can block instances and keywords, but I most just continually block on a community basis what I don’t want to see from All. I’m sure there are hundreds in there. This keeps it quite relevant for me but I’m still in the flow of seeing new subs. I do subscribe to all the ones I really like.

    So it’s a curation process, but a more active one vs trying to hunt subs down like I used to do with Reddit.

    omnissiah,

    Furrys being in a community is a sign of a healthy community and a sign of true freedom of speech.

    Just a pattern I’ve recognized over the years

    dual_sport_dork, (edited ) in Crash reporting
    @dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world avatar

    Two things irritate the shit out of me. First, the “wait while we report this to Microsoft” dialog comes up and implies its transmitting immediately, even for trivial issues, without asking for your confirmation and without indicating what, exactly, it’s sending. (I guess that’s the point of this meme. But a yes/no prompt would be nice?)

    Second is that it does it for absolutely trivial things. Like, the crap point of sale software we use at work can be easily and repeatably made to go into an infinite loop state if you know how to do it, and you have to kill it via Task Manager or whatever. But then this stupid “we’re reporting this to Microsoft” dialog comes up. Oh yeah? You’re reporting it, are you? What the fuck is Microsoft going to do about it, exactly? Send a helicopter so Bill Gates himself can rappel down and bust through the skylight at the office of this two-bit POS software company, guns blazing, hack into their mainframe, and fix their code?

    What a useless thing to show the user.

    lemmesay,
    @lemmesay@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

    lol, I like your way with words. and I fully agree and share the sentiment(hence the meme).
    I disliked crash reporting on windows precisely because of inability to cancel it(by the time you hit cancel, it might’ve already been sent).

    nowadays, I don’t use windows at all. sometimes I’m forced to use macos, and this popup comes up. I dislike this one too since I can’t really see what it’s going to send.

    on my home machine I have Debian with i3 and xfce, which hasn’t crashed a single time. and even if it does in some distant future, I’ll be more than happy to send technical info to them.

    dual_sport_dork,
    @dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world avatar

    You can disable error reporting on Windows, by the way. Disable the “Windows Error Reporting” service. Either via Task Manager, or services.msc, or whatever your preferred method is.
