Meh. If it didn’t start after Jan 6 and Trump’s first term (when he had the seemingly best chance to do it), I’m not so sure it would start now (if he loses again).

If he wins, we’re headed down the path of a dictatorship and maybe we have something happen then, but him losing is just gonna be a bunch of MAGAts whining some more.

possiblylinux127,

Honestly you are probably right. (Assuming the news doesn’t invent something)

paddirn, (edited )

That’s not to say we’re not on the precipice of fascism. That he even has a decent chance of winning the presidency again after that shit show of a first term shows how unbelievably stupid a good portion of Americans are, but they’re also goddamn cowards who won’t do shit if Trump loses, other than piss and whine. “Violence” if he loses is going to be a tantrum.

HootinNHollerin, in Inspiration

The Europeans that went to America were the ones doing that though

criitz,

Yeah they were still Europeans when they names them. This should be the Obama award meme

lugal,

They were. The American identity came later. Until the war of independence, settlers identified with the European countries of their heritage

Che_Donkey,
@Che_Donkey@lemmy.ml avatar

…still do

lugal,

I don’t live in America but I think most would consider themselves Americans. They are proud of the flag and the constitution and stuff. In the 1600s, you wouldn’t have figured a white person when someone said “American”. The whites were Brits or Germans or French, but not American. The natives were Americans.

WarmSoda,

In america we refer to our families by their heritage. Italian American. Irish American. Etc.

Che_Donkey,
@Che_Donkey@lemmy.ml avatar

this statement sums it up nicely. Anecdotally, when I lived in Buenos Aires, every single person was "second generation " Italian…lol

WarmSoda,

Lol yeah I’ve seen that before.

lugal,

Italian American. Irish American. Etc.

My point exactly. They aren’t Italians who happen to live in America but Americans with Italian heritage. And I’m not talking about first or second generation but like “white” people in general. The concept of whiteness exists since they started to be Americans.

WarmSoda,

I’m not really sure what you’re saying. There were no white people before the USA?

lugal,

No, but white people didn’t identify as Americans before that. Neither did they think of themselves as white but as Brits or what ever.

The concept of whiteness only makes sense when it’s in contrast to other, non-white groups. “We are Brits and the Germans aren’t” morphed into “We and the Germans are white and the natives and slaves aren’t”. Hope that makes sense.

criitz, (edited )

Americans consider themselves Americans, but especially in the early days of the melting pot, cultural identity, and specifically that heritage was important. That’s why Americans are always saying they are Irish or Italian or whatever. The actual people from those countries laugh or get defensive about Americans who have never left the US claiming that heritage, but there’s a reason behind it.

acockworkorange,

It’s weird. Someone once told me her husband was German after I mentioned I lived there for a while. So I asked where they’re from, maybe I knew. “From Mississippi…”

kemsat,

They still are. Note how the USA helps Ukraine, primarily white country, but not so much countries that are primarily brown people.

Blackmist,

They don’t help Ukraine because white.

They help Ukraine because fuck Russia.

A lot of the time they didn’t even bother appending “New.” We have way too many Berlins, Manchesters, Lebanons, etc.

Our native-inspired place names are the superior place names, anyway.

There was never an actual social ladder. There’s a social lottery

Kidplayer_666,

As far as I am concerned, there was one. My grand grandparents either didn’t know how to write or at most had the 4th grade, poor farmers in the middle of nowhere. My grandparents all got high school done and ascended to low middle class. Their kids all got to uni and all got to proper middle to middle high class. Only in my generation does it look like uni and other formal education may not be available for a relevant portion of the population, thanks to the great work of the so called ”Socialist Party” (as socialist as I am a frog)

In my more conspiratorial moments I wonder if social media driven social justice is encouraged by the elites to keep us fighting over whether the movies have enough gay/Black/trans actors, critical race theory, trans bathrooms etc so that inequality and serious change never come up meaningfully.

Were I one of the wealthy elite, I could think of no better ally in the fight to support the status quo than twitter social justice.

To be clear, I think most of those folks are doing what they believe is right and I generally agree but it also creates a giant schism between Left and Right when it should be about Haves and Have nots.

Sotuanduso,

Occupy Wall Street was 2011.

I took Google Ngrams with some various terms around social justice, set smoothing to 0, and sorted the outcomes. Feel free to verify; I’m no expert.

Tested terms (alphabetical order): Bigot, Bisexual, Black, Cisgender, Civil Rights, Critical Race Theory, Discrimination, Diversity, Empowerment, Equality, Equity, Gay, Gentrification, Hate Speech, Heterosexual, Homosexual, HRT, Human Rights, Identity Politics, Inclusive, Inequality, Intersectionality, Lesbian, LGBT, Liberation, Marginalize, Microaggression, Oppression, Privilege, Racism, Representation, Social Justice, Solidarity, Systemic, Transgender

I certainly didn’t sort them perfectly. I don’t want to tell you what to think, but I will say that I was pretty sure of this theory before running this test, and though I feel the evidence supports it, it wasn’t as strong as I thought.

I am honestly surprised one hasn’t happened within the last 10 years already.

pinkdrunkenelephants, (edited )

Well, we have 11 months prep-time for this one, so we should use it wisely

  1. Get a passport if you don’t have one already
  2. Get in shape – you are either going to be running or engaging in combat so be sure you’re physically fit enough to do it
  3. Get a gun if you don’t have one and learn how to use it properly
  4. Build an emergency fund – even if it’s just a couple hundred dollars, that’s enough for a bus ticket to a safe state or out of the country entirely
  5. Have an exit plan with your loved ones and make sure you have somewhere to go
RightHandOfIkaros,

I can’t tell if this is a meme or if you’re being serious.

Tbh all of these are reasonable even if there is no threat of collapse like that kind of stuff is just basic shit you do in your life

Ilovethebomb,

The chances of there being wide scale unrest after the election are pretty high actually. I think they have a point.

Anticorp,

I already moved to the mountains. I’ll just keep truckin along like I already do. Ain’t nobody coming up here.

possiblylinux127,

Honesty your time is better spent doing other things. You are way more likely to die in a car than you are from the collapse of society.

I think there is above 50 cities named “Villeneuve” in France (literraly meaning "New City)

Or Villefranche which means it was exempted from taxes.

Or how there are so many “St Something” that they had to add “de somewhere” to disambiguate lmao.

To be fair, have you ever been to regular York? I have, it sucked. New York is a slight to moderate improvement.

For real? York is one of England’s most historically important cities. And a really nice city, too. What sucked about it?

Kusimulkku,

Probably it being in England
