A few times when I first started engaging in multiplayer stuff, I forgot to unequip the Ring of the Pale Order which prevents being healed. Oopsie daisie.
I reject “sus” being zoomer exclusive. Among Us has been a huge hit for 5 years now, was popular across demographics, and made an appearance in Glass Onion, which is the boomeriest Millennial movie ever.
I agree, but for a different reason. I had an Aussie friend that said “sus” all the time on IRC, and that was in the 00’s, so it well predates Among Us.
Ok, maybe suss is Australian. I was surprised to see it listed with "on cap" because I've heard suss being said all my life by a wide range of people, but I did grow up in Australia.
I have appropriated “sus” and “yeet” and sometimes “gucci”…I think those don’t even come from the same gens of slang, but they feel right in a sentence. Especially yeet.
I’m pretty sure my friends and I have incorrectly appropriated yeet. We’ll use it in the normal way but we’ll also say yeet like sweet or hell yeah. We’re all upper 20s now so it feels rather hilarious.
Once you consider that “yeet” is the opposite of “yoink”, it really seems like it’s actually a millennial word. Though interestingly, my spell check considers “yeet” correct but not “yoink”
I get most of my slang from among us and then I learn the correct usage on tiktok and then I purposely do it wrong because aging is fun and I’m a parent.
Thank you! I thought I was going mad because I distinctly remember saying “sus” when I was in highschool in the early 2000s. It was definitely used both as “go sus it out” but also “don’t sus us miss” was something we said all the time when a teacher tried to catch students smoking behind the portables.
So it sort of just feels like Gen Z expanded the definition.
I asked my wife if she wanted kids and she just waved around and said “look at this shit, do you really want to put a someone through this?” Yep, the world is screwed. But I believe people have to make their own, conscious choice. No sense in forcing them to either have kids or not.
you wont catch me raising children both because im a mess, and i refuse to raise children in a dysfunctional society that hasn’t got its shit together.
We had a long talk about it and the above statement is just the gist of it. If we lived in better times, sure. But not in this timeline. We both came to that conclusion and it is perfectly fine.
Not to butt in your business, but if that’s your only reason to not have children, and you’re otherwise financially capable and willing to raise kids, have you two considered adoption? Instead of bringing someone extra into this shit as you put it, you’d just be helping one of the people who’re unfortunately already in it.
Sorry for the late reply, was night here. Yes, we actually thought about that. But while it is easy to just have a kid, adoption (at least here in Germany where you only have around 4000 adoptions per year) comes with quite the list of requirements. We are both working full time and just recently found a very nice apartment, but without a seperate room for a kid. Then again my wife is a kindergarten teacher, so she already has like 20 kids ;)
As the parent of a current Kindergartener (and also a former one myself), give your wife a big hug for us. Her job is so important, a especially if we want this world’s society to turn around and fix the problems it’s made for itself.
The sad part of this is the people here with the critial thinking and reasoning skills to make that descision are the ones not passing on those attributes, but its the low income & education people are the ones who cant even think far enough ahead to wear a fucking condom.
You say that as if it’s necessary for human kind to improve. We don’t have control over what happens to our species and we will go extinct which is absolutely fine. Not sure what is up with this whole obsession with continuing the species. Stop worrying about something that will naturally work itself out instead of complaining that the ‘wrong’ pe ople are breeding. Maybe thats just the natural way of things. I mean, greed, violence, hatred and discrimination are all ingrained parts of the human animal meant to aide in the whole survival aspect of things. It wasn’t meant to catapult earth species into space. Unless you are ok with genetic engineering and removing those traits from the gene pool you will never not have power hungry assholes ruining it for the rest of us. And that’s fine. That’s just what life on earth is like.
My wife and I were planning to have kids in 2020. We had already started the process in 2019. Then covid happened. Then people hoarded toilet paper during a respiratory pandemic that doesn’t even affect your bowels. Then supply lines shut down. Then forest fires raged out of control across the country, turning the skies into red ash. Then protests and riots broke out across the country. All the while trump was happening about eleventy billion times. Ultimately we got a master class on how fucking ridiculous this world has become. We decided never to have kids. We’re already middle aged, so that’s it for us. It’s too late now. We occasionally consider adopting, but that’s a whole other bag of cats.
People weren’t hoarding toilet paper because they thought it affected their bowels – they were hoarding it because who knew what might happen where we’d have to stay at home or be isolated for a long time.
What’s strange is, why toilet paper and not much else lol. At least where I lived. I wasn’t hoarding, I was just trying to get some at the store because we were running out completely, and the shelves were empty. 💀 Had to buy some non-bulk expensive and fragile af paper.
The why TP is because it was big and noticeable in store. There was a chunk missing and then word got that “you need to get some before they run out” and that causes a run and the stores run out.
If you remember during the gas pipeline cyber attack. It only effected a specific area of the country SE area, but areas outside of the actual problem ran out of fuel because people heard about other stations running out and having problems. We are not good at handling stressful situations together. We turn into a “fuck you, I got mine and I might need to stockpile more for later” type of people.
If you ever decide you do want kids, I’d endorse adopting. That way you’re not bringing a new life into this shitty world, you’re hopefully improving one that’s already gotten dealt a bad hand in life.
Just FYI it does affect bowels. My mom had straight diarrhea for weeks while she had covid. I may have had it and my bf we both had the hits for over a week.
Same, same. Well just in Germany. We haven’t been hit as bad as the U.S. but your country stretches over three climate zones. However, we live in a small town on the Baltic coast and last year was nuts with the weather. And yes, some people are unfortunately very egoistical and make it even harder for the rest who just want to have a halfway decent life.
“I can’t help with dinner, the dog has his head on my lap.” “Well, sure, that’s fine, honey. I just made a cat move off my lap because at least ONE of us has to be responsible.”
Depending on the public restrooms, I tend to wash my hands before touching things downstairs. I shower and I launder; I don’t use my junk to touch everything through the day like I do my hands. As far as I’m concerned, downstairs is one of the cleanest parts of my body and I like to keep it that way, so washing hands after the fact is a near redundant action for my personal hygiene and a social courtesy for others’.
Especially given the scabs mods (no, actually scabs was right the first time:-) that they brought in. Shudder - it’s foxes running the henhouse now, there will be blood.
From what I’ve been told, out of the three active subs I modded that got yanked and restaffed with whoever, only one isn’t a bot ridden mess.
And that one is kinda shit (again, that’s second hand) now.
Not that I was some paragon of modding, it’s just that you can’t have random assholes put in place after actual users are pissed off and expect things to work out well.
The kind of person that would step up and mod your subs after first the protests and then you being booted… let’s just say that they would not be “random”. All across Reddit those people that mods were forced to ban for harassment of others, who REFUSED to follow the rules, are now sitting on top of the thrones - but not to serve the community, and rather to see how they can get it to serve them, just exactly in line with Huffman’s vision:-(.
Don’t worry about your subs though - those who decided to remain were warned, so it is on their own heads. Your subs essentially died, and what remains are their animated corpses:-(. At which point no wonder they seem a little “different” now!:-P - a little less usable, less friendly, less relevant.
Meanwhile, we seem to be doing JUST FINE over here on the Fediverse:-). I’m far happier with this than I ever was with Reddit (which I joined quite late, 4 years ago). Most niche topics are basically gone over here, but discussing general topics is actually possible now whereas with Reddit it was not (at least, not without a LARGE possibility of being hit with a veritable army of hostile commenters, almost regardless of what was said or where it was delivered).
Edit: this is not relevant in any way shape or form but… I wanted to add it anyway, enjoy:-). JO
Neat explanation. Thanks. I also modded some communities over there.
It’s not only reddit i‘m seeing this happen on. At work, on discord, people with questionable morals start to get into power and take over from those who built stuff up.
It’s like we have an epidemic of the dark triad. Being manipulative, impulsive and brutal seems to get more and more normalized through our economic system.
There is nothing new under the sun - technology may be creating new avenues for people to rise up through, but the reasons for their actions remain the same. In Germany, it was the rise of radio that allowed Hitler to, for the first time in human history, bypass the established rule of that nation and talk directly to the populace, which he leveraged to become the ruling authority. At some point he was even banished, but managed to return. The similarities b/t him and DT are eerily similar, and yet those who do not know their history are doomed to repeat it.
But as for our economy, on that note I think we are following more along the lines of old Rome. Surely that worked well for them, with zero problems, and therefore we will be safe from any harm, forever… right? R-r-right!? :-P
What’s odd about it is that the founding fathers directly warned us that this would happen. We simply did not care. Specifically, they warned about opening up voting to the “uneducated masses”, rather than the intelligentsia who had sufficient leisure time to think through the issues as they voted, not needing to toil in a field for long hours in the hot sun every single day. Do we have the means to now convert EVERYONE into the intelligentsia, with mechanization e.g. robots can do the vast majority of effort to farm our crops, and tools like the internet that puts information at our fingertips without even having to so much as turn the page of a physical book? In any case, there are those who do not WANT knowledge, and yet still want the privilege of being leaders nonetheless - e.g. those who showed up on January 6 to “defend the Constitution”, while at the same time admitting that they had never in fact read it, not even so much as once.:-(
I get it. I have the same exact drives inside of me, as do you, as do we all. The difference is that some of us are aware, care about that, and even attempt to fight those dark impulses - to be lazy, greedy, and the like. Sometimes anyway:-). Whereas those behind the scenes seem hardened in their resolve, to intentionally go in the opposite direction… and since most of the people seem to either want to join them or at least not oppose them, they are winning. i.e. Elon Musk and Steve Huffman both.
And as a former mod, you KNOW - it takes ENORMOUS amounts of effort to fight against that. It is SO MUCH easier to destroy than it is to create, or even to maintain.:-(
Yes, I agree on most points, especially comparing the different populists/fascists.
But radio was new, as is the internet and now we have a word for this behavior. Psychology shows us why people like musk rise to power.
Instead of taking away voting rights from people we deem „too stupid“, we should hospitalize people without a moral compass like we should do with serial killers to be instead of sending them to the electric chair afterward (or prison for life in europe)
If someone shows parts of the dark triad, they should be barred from any office that has any power over any other human being.
Are they great strategists? Yes! Are they unable and/or unwilling to empathise with their victims? Also yes.
Give them strategy work but dont let them take care of people. Its not that hard.
I don’t think it’s about stupidity per se - and I am a working-class person myself, thus have to spend many hours of every day doing my work activities, with less time leftover to devote to such things, so possibly I might be recusing myself even from this? - and rather I think it is about people who are educated vs. not. e.g. those who can spot logical fallacies vs. not, and if some subject is about to be voted on, someone who can understand at least the bare minimum of what is being talked about (is trickle down good? bad? neutral?). Anyway, that ship has sailed… I was just saying that the founders DID warn us, and we DID ignore them, and there ARE alternatives other than restricting voting, i.e. making a liberal arts style of education free for anyone who wants it.
About hospitalizing people without a moral compass, I have a better idea: why don’t we put them in charge of literally everything, everywhere? :-P Unfortunately this is no joke, b/c that seems to be what tends to happen.:-( Shareholders vote with their dollars, and more often than not they seem to choose to invest into people who rise up and do WHATEVER IT TAKES to make profits.
“Stupid”, “immoral”, “evil”, these are not just words, but in another sense they are, b/c what matters is how the world truly works - one principle of that being survival of the fittest. If we killed off the top half of all people in the world after sorting them by IQ, the remaining people might be more “stupid”, but they would be alive, in comparison to the alternative. Conversely, people such as Robert Iger the current CEO of Disney who has run the company for almost two decades, tend to remain in power at the behest of the shareholders, who could vote to expunge him at any time if they wanted. You might say “evil” or “greedy”, but they say “me likey, and want to keep”.
What you are missing though it that it is not just those INDIVIDUAL PEOPLE who are “greedy” or “evil” or whatever, it is the entire SYSTEM - e.g. if Robert Iger ever were to die (he is getting older now…), he would be immediately replaced, by someone who similarly meets the expectations, nay the DEMANDS, of the stockholders. So no, I don’t think it is anywhere remotely close to as easy as you describe. The people who own stock in that company may not be okay with owning a slave personally, but they are quite happy to benefit/profit from the misery of the workers who are forced to churn out that assembly-line whimsey, under what you and I might call “evil” working conditions, but which they call “cost-effective”.
So be careful with what you wish for. You might want those people prevented from taking office, but in turn it is THEY who are likely to abuse their power in order to prevent US from holding office. Might makes right. I mean… it ABSOLUTELY does NOT, and yet if you are not willing to fight for what you believe, those who are willing to take action will win the day. In one sense “they” even have a semi-admirable trait then that you and I lack: humility, to bow before the rules of the universe and work according to its precepts, rather than attempting to impose their own particular brand of morality onto it.
Dedicated to people who posted anti-vax misinformation and such on social media, then subsequently died of Covid, like Herman Cain. Was super busy in 2021 when (preventable due to vaccines being available) covid deaths were at an all-time high in the US. The monster was usually labelled “Delta variant” and Spongebob was “Me.”
Yeah probably 17th century - confirmed as early as 1703 but expected to have existed earlier. So I was definitely wrong. But how do we know it wasn’t invented thousands of years earlier and forgotten? But yeah, not in Jesus’ time.
It instantly turns me off any game. Much of my free time for gaming on the weekends is really when I’m doing less active chores, like laundry. If I can’t pause to change loads and fold, I can’t play that game.
I play a lot of souls likes and most don’t have pause. But they usually save your position if you go back to the main menu; so I pause by just quitting to the main menu.
It’s called UniversalPauseButton (no link because on phone, but you can Google it). It basically makes the PAUSE/BREAK button pause any active process. Press it again to unpause.
Will likely cause issues with online games, but if you’re playing offline or in single-player, like Witcher 3, Remnant, Baldurs Gate 3, etc it works wonders.
Signed, a new parent who often has to go comfort a waking baby at night.
I remember when I was a kid my buddy and I were raving about some game because you couldn’t pause it. It was so cool. Emersive. You really had to make good decisions with you inventory, etc etc.
Today I’ll just turn the game off if it tries that bullshit lol
which supports linux, and I believe takes a slightly different approach on windows so where one app might not work for one game you could try the other
The post is overtly political, saying grandpa here is preparing for Nazis 2, the sequel. Secondly, choosing Lemmy over Reddit is a political choice itself. It’s much more mainstream to just use Reddit, so to go against it is political.
It’s licensed under GPL and doesn’t have ads for political reasons, that’s more my point. People who care enough to use Lemmy over Reddit are going to be more opinionated and passionate.
Dude looks and acts exactly like my great grandfather who served in the navy kn WWII. He was a dyed-in-the-wool Democrat and hated Republicans until he died in 2017.
… So was my great grandfather, but he was an old school Southern Democrat, he even voted straight ticket. I’d be willing to bet he wouldn’t be fond of modern Democrats.
People forget that the Democrats of the early 1900s aren’t the same as today. Remember that Republicans are the party of Lincoln, but I wouldn’t be surprised if modern Republicans wanted to bring back slavery.
